Paul Blumenthal: The lame-duck power plays by Republican legislatures in Michigan, North Carolina and Wisconsin to seize power from recently elected Democratic Party executive officials are just the latest egregious efforts by the Republican Party to deem Democrats unconstitutional.

Admin's note: Participants in this discussion must follow the site's moderation policy. Profanity will be filtered. Abusive conduct is not allowed.

The ethos behind the "Democrats are unconstitutional" process is that governance by non-Republicans is inherently corrupt. Democrats do not represent "real Americans," as former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin put it in 2008.... For Republicans, political power is now no different than an exclusionary childhood clubhouse: No Democrats allowed.

This policy effort to refuse Democrats power, at all costs, did not begin with the lame-duck session of 2018. What's happening now is a part of an ongoing process by Republicans in the courts and in elected office to increase power for their own wealthy interests, attack and divide Democratic Party constituencies and create voting obstacles that dilute equal representation.

All of this points to the one thread that runs through all of these efforts to restrict politics and governance to Republicans: Each attempt to declare Democrats unconstitutional specifically attacks the power of African-Americans. African-Americans are heavily represented in public and private employee unions, suffer most from voting restrictions (particularly those designed with "surgical precision" to harm them) and contribute less money to campaigns than white Americans, nevermind powerful corporations.

The specific, sometimes clearly purposeful, harming of the interests of African-Americans echoes the most infamous era of democratic backsliding in American history. After the collapse of post-Civil War Reconstruction, Southern Democrats calling themselves "Redeemers" seized power in former Confederate states, often by violence, and ended black political power and freedom by imposing mandatory work laws that reinstituted slavery in all but name and gutting voting rights, among many other terrible things. The democratic backsliding that re-imposed white supremacy and one-party rule lasted for more than half-a-century.

All of this is so clearly and unarguably wrong it shouldn't even beggar a conversation, much less a debate. Yet here we are, with tribal (read neo-supremacists) replaying and repackaging many of their old hits from the Reconstruction era now in Trump's post-modern nation where citizens who don't agree with the Massa's politics should be blocked and stymied as a matter of policy.

The more things change, the more they stay the same... or repeat themselves from a heinous past.

I take it personally when Republicans do things like this. I won't forget. There will be repurcussions and they will scream like stuck pigs.

But we're supposed to be civil and treat them with respect? We're supposed to believe that the Dems are the cause of the political divide that's led to gridlock?

Example after example after example shows that the Repubs refuse to respect elections and govern in good faith. In fact they're showing that they absolutely loath our country and it's system of government and would probably ball the founding fathers stupid -------- if they ever met them.

As conservatism continues to lose democratically, and will continue to lose demographically, don't expect the Republicans to forego conservatism. Look for them to forego democracy.

Republicans really are the best communists. By stopping up any outlet in our pressure cooker political and economic system, they make revolution inevitable. They won't like what eventually comes next.

Exactly. Republicans in Wisconsin who are pushing this legislation have had the gall to attack the incoming Dem Governor for his "aggressive" and "combative" attitude in response to this garbage. You can't win with these douchebags.

I doubt the FBI is interested in how Danni will vote next time.

Or are you actually suggesting Danni is about to take up arms and water the tree of liberty?

It's curious that none of our resident "patriots" have jumped on this thread to defend our Constitutional Republic.

Not even the ones who fought for it because they loved it so much.

Sort of like when you Dems dropped the threshold of votes in the Senate to a simple majority just so you didnt have to worry about Republican votes? You people are so hypocritical it's hilarious!

I love your attitude. It's one step closer to civil war. I dont care what you take personally. You need to stop always trying to stop us when we have power and we leave you alone when you have power.

You liberals started this, we will finish it.

You dont make it so when the other side is in power they cant do anything. You started this and this is what happens.

#11 Changing Senate rules isn't really comparable to passing a bunch of lame duck bills to weaken an incoming governor and AG just because you lost an election, but your apparent ------ for political violence is noted. Maybe you can get another check from the government to come out of retirement and fight for the confederacy.

OK, you should all know by now how terrifically stupid this article is. I've posted many pieces of evidence throughout the years that prove both parties do this and Google has thousands, tens of thousands, perhaps more examples. The least objective members of a party are also the ones who spread hypocritical hate the most. We need more articles from actual objective party members from both sides that illustrate how their party can change their ways to avoid being hypocrites in the future. Both sides should be fighting the other by making positive changes in their own party and saying how much better they are for doing so, then the other party can do the same thing and hypocritically say THEY are the better party because they made those changes. Instead, both sides just hypocritically attack the other for the bad stuff they all do.

#15,

You are only talking about the racial aspect, Corky, which is what I expect from a "progressive". I'm not talking racial. I want a civil war to settle our cultural divide, more along the lines of, "You stay over there, I'll stay over here", type thing. The civil war was about states rights.

I dont want to live like California or New York and I have that right. Sorry, you cant tell me not to..That's what the next Civil War will be about.

- to settle our cultural divide,

Like war is the best way to decide cultural divides? That's what we have politics and voting for, relatively bloodless war. But then, some people are just blood-thirsty... or dumb enough to thing that might makes right.

Republicans have used divide and conquer by cultural divide into a political art form, and we see the results when Trump voters say they are afraid of losing their majority status.

I have no problems with abortion until about 4 months preganacy. Eventually, even you liberals have to admit at some point it's a person.

Eventually, even you busybodies have to admit at some point that it is none of your business.

The most heart-rendering, painful and agonizing decisions a woman has to make is to abort a late-term pregnancy

Our baby's heart was severely deformed. The official diagnosis was "truncus arteriosus," "double inlet/single ventricle," and "situs inversus." Our sweet baby's heart did not have the correct number of pumps or valves, and it was flipped on the wrong side of his tiny body. There was no cure, only palliative options.

The doctor and a nurse practitioner carefully walked us through treatment options. Our baby would have faced at least three major heart operations, each with a significant risk of death, in the first two years of his life -- beginning in the first week after he was born. He would spend a significant portion of his first year in the hospital, receiving food and medicines through a tube.

Even if Butterfly survived these initial operations, he would need heart, liver, and likely kidney transplants later in life, plus the significant possibility of complications, including intellectual and physical impairments and massive stroke. In the best-case scenario, his tiny existence would be consumed by pain.

After we had asked every question we could think of, the doctor and the nurse left the room. We turned to each other, eyes full of tears, and silently shook our heads. We both knew right away And then we immediately called our OB/GYN and asked her to help us get a late-term abortion.

The most "liberal" president in the history of the country (FDR) was elected overwhelmingly four times (his smallest total was 53.39%). That suggests "liberals" are the majority in the country. It all changed when the right found the bugaboo of Communism after the war (and into the "Cold War") to panic the public (white people) into supporting policies designed to primarily benefit the rich.

Only a true Christian would want someone to be brought into this world with nothing but such an existence to consider. Mercy, apparently, is only warranted for the sick and dying.

Whilst I am generally in favor of tilting the balance of power in divided government toward the legislature, the timing and circumstances behind this is quite obviously nothing more than a partisan power grab. This is flat-out wrong and I hope this gambit fails. The only way that something like this is legitimate is if it's bipartisan.
