The chief financial officer of Chinese tech giant Huawei has been arrested in Canada. She faces extradition to the United States pursuant to violating Iranian sanctions. The US has long been concerned that Huawei phones are engineered to be controlled by China.

... A bargaining chip in Trump's trade war? ...

Hopefully it is that small of an event.

‘Shocking' Huawei Arrest Threatens to Upend Trump-Xi Trade Truce
www.bloomberg.com

...It's hard to overstate the significance of her arrest in Beijing: Meng is the daughter of the founder of Huawei, a national champion at the forefront of Xi's efforts for China to be self-sufficient in strategic technologies. While the U.S. routinely asks allies to extradite drug lords, arms dealers and other criminals, arresting a major Chinese executive like this is rare -- if not unprecedented.

"The timing and manner of this is shocking," Andrew Gilholm, director of North Asia analysis at Control Risks Group, said by phone. "It's not often the phrase OMG appears in our internal email discussions. " ...

Two things that could mitigate this...

1) Pres Trump has not yet put in his $0.02. SO he left himself an out to defuse the situation.

2) China is looking as if it is treating this as being separate from the trade talks. For now.

This is a big deal, two friends of mine (both Studio Execs) are in China right now and are scrambling to get on a plane, worried that they may be arrested in retaliation. I am sure they are not alone in trying to flee China.

The fact that Canada is the one who arrested her shows that this isn't just Donnie Little Hands showing his temper, because I don't think Canada would be involved if it was. Since a publication ban was issued by the Canadian Judge who issued the warrant, this shows me that it goes to the highest level of Canadian government.

"Huawei phones are engineered to be controlled by China."

You get what you pay for.

Why on earth would we trust the Chinese to touch ANY of our critical IT?

Person interviewed on NPR tonight said that it is unlikely that this move came from Pres Trump as it was handled by the Justice Dept, which is not built to play politics.

They aren't the only ones, from what I've been reading. Also, a lot of business trips to China by US execs are being cancelled until this blows over. Unfortunately, the Chinese have very long memories....

Some more background info from Bloomberg...
www.bloomberg.com

...White House National Security Adviser John Bolton, who sat at the table with Trump and Xi, knew in advance of the U.S. request that Canadian authorities arrest Huawei CFO Wanzhou Meng, he told National Public Radio Thursday. After Bolton's interview, a White House official said that Trump was not aware of the arrest in advance, distancing the president from the provocative move.

But planning for the arrest was well underway as Trump prepared for a dinner that he said later resulted in "an incredible" deal with Xi -- an agreement that may be in danger of unraveling after Chinese officials learned of Meng's capture and pending extradition to the U.S....

My sister (who does corporate PR for one of the big wire services and runs the Far East for her company and who I just found out in is Shanghai) just texted me and said that MSS agents were at the front desk of her hotel this morning looking at the register to see who was there. It so spooked her and her client (from Alphabet) that they immediately drove to the airport and now have tickets on a plane later today to Japan. They are currently in the Lounge for JAL and have been assured that JAL security will escort them to their plane.

Good thing hillary didn't get elected.
Then your sister wouldn't know the thrill of worrying about arrest during her business trips.
