Congress is expected to vote this week on a new farm bill, which includes changes to the food stamp program. Lawmakers should take the time to read up on recent research about the program's effects.

"For example, food stamp access during childhood is linked to a 5 percentage point reduction in heart disease and an 18 percentage point increase in high school completion rates, compared to those who lacked access."

On average, high school grads cost the taxpayer $200k less each, in costs - taxes paid over their lifetime.

Good for food stamps.

Screw people who want to take poor kids off this avenue to success because some losers would rather use their EBT at strip clubs or otherwise abuse the system. Throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

Can't have that when the 1% need more tax cuts.

I doubt that any EBT card can be used at a strip club. Computers prevent that type of abuse. I won't claim though that some recipients don't sell their "food" for money that they might spend in nefarious ways.

US economic policies have forced most child rearing families to hold two jobs, where one was adequate in the fifties. Under such circumstances school lunch programs should be served to all school children, for their good health, so that all children are created equal and to make parenting a bit easier. Nor should they pander to the children by serving McDonalds, as sometimes happens in this country. Nothing but good can come from such a policy.

#7 | Posted by bayviking at 2018-12-06 09:31 AM | Reply

Hungry children don't learn well. Not educating children just produces ignorant adults. The food you feed children will be recovered in the higher taxes educated adults pay. Those opposed to food stamps are simply short sighted morons themselves, probably malnutritioned when children.

A wise way to educate an ignorant adult is by giving their child a reasonable chance at someday being able to educate them.

"This evidence contradicts some critiques of food stamps, which misleadingly argue that it's an inefficient and ineffective program."

Sigh...the lack of good logic today is resulting in idiocracy. Hey, electrolytes help humans...humans are living things...therefore Brawndo is great for living things so let's give it to all our plants because they are living things!

The research and results had nothing to do with proving or disproving how efficient and effective the program is. The results just prove that there are opportunities for people on stamps to improve their own livelihood. A 5% increase doesn't mean anything...if they actually researched efficiency, maybe they would find that it is extremely inefficient and if it were efficient there would have been a 50% increase. Or, they may find it is very efficient and that 5% would have been -50%. Making illogical conclusions based on research that wasn't meant to be used for those conclusions is a partisan tactic only. It's a shame so many people will read this and believe the logic without thinking critically.

The amount of fraud is just relatively insignificant and not a convincing argument against it.

In other words you are speaking about cash benefits when the article and discussion is about food stamps....

#14 | Posted by justagirl_idaho at 2018-12-06 11:54 AM | Reply

EBT cards come from SNAP, aka the Food Stamp Program.

#15 | Posted by sitzkrieg at 2018-12-06 11:57 AM | Reply

They actually come from the social services department in general and can contain both food and cash benefits. When someone checks out at the register the amount appropriated for food goes first, then they must authorize for cash a second time through the same card. If you use the ATM you can only withdraw the portion that is cash benefits for things like paying rent. If someone were to be stupid enough to withdraw their cash for a strip club and be evicted or have their power shut off that is on them. I seriously doubt there is enough of this for you to worry. Food stamp amounts are not treated the same and have no access other than at the register through a program at each store.

#16 | Posted by justagirl_idaho at 2018-12-06 12:09 PM | Reply

I should also include that the cash benefit you are complaining about is called TANF instead of SNAP. They are provided on the same card at the same time, but one is cash and the other food...

#17 | Posted by justagirl_idaho at 2018-12-06 12:15 PM | Reply

I didn't complain, I just pointed out fraud existed despite Danni's assertion it was not possible, then noted it was miniscule compared to the benefits.

#18 | Posted by sitzkrieg at 2018-12-06 12:26 PM | Reply

"Danni's assertion it was not possible" - Sitz

It is NOT possible to withdraw SNAP benefits in any way from the card they are on. Danni is correct.

She also allowed "I won't claim though that some recipients don't sell their "food" for money that they might spend in nefarious ways." Which is fraud and does happen though not nearly as much as people would expect us to believe. In this case a person not from the household goes shopping for food with the SNAP recipient then pays less in cash after the shopping trip than the food cost.

Just keeping you honest (unless you really didnt know and then I guess I am teaching you something) ^_^

God damn, you are dumb.

"The results just prove that there are opportunities for people on stamps to improve their own livelihood. A 5% increase doesn't mean anything..."

No. The research is about kids in families with food stamps and how it effects them long term. It's not about the parents.

It says they actually do better later in life. Not that they merely have opportunities to improve their lives now.

"A 5% increase doesn't mean anything..."

5 point drop in heart disease is a ---- ton. And an 18 point increase in high school completion is frankly incredible.

You don't understand science or stats. You didn't read the article apparently. And you don't have a single study contradicting the results.

Leave the DR. We are tired of your lies.

That is terrible, and it is still unknown how they were able to get an EBT scanning machine hooked into the Ohio state system. It is obvious that this is not normal. It is still not possible to go to an ATM to withdraw SNAP benefits. These people were intentionally tricking the system and pretending that a food purchase was made, not a withdrawal.

I know the person who handles the kids sent to in-school suspension at a local high school.

She has bags of snacks, granola bars, etc...to give to kids who get sent there.

They're hungry. almost all of them. She gives them something to eat and they are so much better to deal with.

"it is still unknown how they were able to get an EBT scanning machine hooked into the Ohio state system."

I would guess Ohio GOP officials let them, so they could claim the system is being abused, to they could claim they have reason to shut it all down.

The systen in question was probably owned by a GOP donor, or possibly even a GOP government official.

On the other hand, we shouldn't overlook simple GOP incompetence. Kasich seems competent though.

I used to have a technician that used to turn into a raging bear but was also shaky and weak until he ate (or you fed him a candy bar). You've seent he commercial maybe.

We kept Baby Ruth's around just for him. Turned out he had diabetes and almost died before he was diagnosed. We may have saved his life and didn't even know it at the time. We were just trying to shut him up because he got real loud and annoying.

Ohio is an inexplicable hotbed of SNAP fraud. A guy was indicted about 6 months ago for an $8.4 million fraud scheme. I'm not sure how it worked, but on the surface it looks like they captured card data (maybe cloned it?) and were billing large families EBT cards without their knowledge, and ran the scam for 8 years. Another was busted by the feds for a $3.4 million scam, also last spring. They all got rounded up as part of a crackdown that started in 2017 from new legislation.

We should all be appalled that our sense of decency has been so gravely corrupted that a trillion dollars is quickly set aside for upgrading nuclear weapons while school lunch programs remain controversial. Nothing seems to matter more than the ability to beat everybody else. Least of all, the millions of human lives destroyed to achieve those ends. We just don't care, as people in power, like Madelyn Albright, have confirmed is the official policy of our government.
