Japan is preparing an order for roughly 100 US-designed F-35 stealth fighter jets in a deal that could potentially upend the balance of power in Asia, according to sources familiar with the process.

This will drive the Chinese insane, especially if they refit the Izumo and/or the Kaga to be limited range aircraft carriers. While they will be roughly half the size of the Liaoning, the much touted but little seen J-20 is not carrier capable and two F-35s could destroy an entire shipload of J-15s.

If the Japanese had broached this idea even 10 years ago the ASEAN nations would have been up in arms, but with the rapid build up of the PLAN most of Japan's neighbors probably welcome this development.

And before you say, "wait, the F-35 can only carry 4 AMRAAMS internally", Lockheed Martin has now released their "Third Day of War" or "Beast Mode" load out, which carries up to 16 AMRAAMS on internal and external hardpoints, which would provide "over the horizon" CAS for a couple of F-35s or F-22s in Stealth Mode, each of which can track up to 20 targets with separate firing solutions.

Watch an F-35 up close training in 'beast mode' for air support and all out war

Huge moves by Japan, but I thought japan couldn't have aircraft carriers, even if it is a "jet holder ship" or whatever they will label this type of retrofitted ship.

It's clearly a self-defense carrier that can defensively sail thousands of miles from Japan and launch defensive stealth planes to drop defensive ordinance on targets without triggering air defense warnings.... for defense!

I thought japan couldn't

Article 9 was "reinterpreted" in 2014 to mean that Japan could defend its' allies. Since all wars are defensive in the eyes of generals and politicians we can proceed to MJGA, end this Hello Kitty nonsense, and return her to glory as a 1,000 year tormentor of all her neighbors. If the boys at Lockheed can make a few bob along the way, all the better.

Keep dumping that money into the MIC beast, more and more and more and more and... how are we going to pay for healthcare and education for our citizenry? Uh-oh, I'm being un-American again by caring about investing in the welfare of Americans and social infrastructure over bombs overseas, silly me.

You do realize that this article is about Japan spending its money on planes built in the US...right?

The big advantage the F35C has over most fighter jets is the ability for vertical takeoffs and landings and still preform as a mach 2 fighter. They do not need a big carrier with those birds. If they have room on the hanger deck, or the flight deck they are operational.

Nah I was too blitzed to comprehend it all.

Weapons here, weapons there, weapons weapons everywhere! Courtesy of our good buddies at Lockheed.
