Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

A transgender woman who died in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody after being held in a privately operated detention center was likely physically abused there, according an autopsy report released Monday. Andrew Free, an attorney representing her family, told The Daily Beast that her treatment in ICE custody went far beyond neglectful. "She journeyed thousands of miles fleeing persecution and torture at home only to be met with neglect and torture in this country's for-profit human cages."

Um, no, He/she died because he had AIDS.

One day after arriving at Cibola, Ms. Hernández Rodriguez was admitted to a local hospital, and was later transferred to Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque, where she died while in intensive care.

The autopsy concluded that Hernández Rodriguez's cause of death was most likely "severe complications of dehydration superimposed upon HIV infection

#3 I don't condone beating anyone to death. I do condone posting threads from questionable Internet sites. I did a quick Google search and nothing confirming this story of beaten to death from a regular media source like CNN, MSNBC, FOX etc.

She/He wasnt beaten to death. The article says how this person died. He/She died in a hospital, not in ICE custody. And "was likely" abused there is not proof of being abused there.

The Daily Beast isn't exactly a questionable site - the stories I have read have been factually accurate in general. I will grant you they are quite slanted though.

"Sperry's autopsy, the second conducted on Hernández Rodriguez's body following her death, also found evidence of physical abuse, with "deep bruising" on her hands and abdomen, evidence of blunt-force trauma "indicative of blows, and/or kicks, and possible strikes with blunt object." An accompanying diagram illustrated long, thin bruises along Hernández Rodriguez's back and sides, as well as extensive hemorrhaging on Hernández Rodriguez's right and left wrists, which Dr. Sperry found were "typical of handcuff injuries.""

Denied Medical for days before being taken to the hospital with severe symptoms...

Speaking frankly - "Private" Jails should be banned. It's the job of the government to punish. When you put it into the hands of corporations and add profit into the mix things become very shady very quickly.

We have had horrendous issues in Michigan with out even wholesale privatization but just private contractors in prisons.

Put simply, profiting from crime should not be permitted.

But we allow it, and the obvious moral hazard it creates, because it makes a few rich people even richer.

Thanks, Capitalism!

Cindy Hyde-Smith would love to be in the front row to witness that beat-down.

ICE didn't have "beat woman to death" on their calendar entries, so it couldn't have happened.

Very misleading headline.

"Beaten, died" doesn't mean the same thing as "beaten to death." And if you think being beaten and then dehydrated to death by ICE is something to be proud of, you might not be so "small government " after all.

Certainly the beating was intentional. What makes you think the dehydration wasn't?

The autopsy said Hernandez was found with deep bruising on her rib cage and deep contusions on her back, which were "indicative of blows, and/or kicks, and possible strikes with a blunt object." Her wrists showed deep soft tissues and musculature bleeding, which it said were typical of injuries from handcuffs.

"According to observations of other detainees who were with Ms. Hernandez Rodriguez, the diarrhea and vomiting episodes persisted over multiple days with no medical evaluation or treatment, until she was gravely ill," Sperry wrote in the report.

Lynly Egyes, the director of litigation of the Transgender Law Center, called Hernandez's death "entirely preventable."

ICE declined to comment on the specifics of the independent autopsy report.

"A review of Hernandez's death conducted by ICE Health Service Corps medical professionals confirmed that she suffered from a history of untreated HIV," spokeswoman Danielle Bennett said in a statement. "At no time did the medical personnel treating Ms. Hernandez at Cibola General Hospital or Lovelace Medical Center raise any issues of suspected physical abuse."

Did ICE cuff her and then beat her to death? Beating an AIDS victim, very 1980's.

I read an article yesterday, I don't have the time to dig it up right now, but the gist of it was there were no background checks done on any one at this facility to green-light the process.

I will try to dig up the article later.

So much winning.

"And if you think ICE did that intentionally, you should go ---- yourself."

It's sort of impossible to not think they did it intentionally. No one dies of dehydration quickly. No one gets bruises all over their body accidentally. This was a crime, murder, and it needs to be addressed.
