Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, November 20, 2018

There are lots of headlines about the numbing of the American psyche to mass shootings. Researchers suggest that a desire to retreat emotionally when news of another shooting emerges doesn't mean Americans accept gun violence as inevitable.

Are Mass Shootings Doomed to Be America's 'New Normal'?

Unfortunately, yes.

There is no cure that gun owners will swallow.

If there was a cure it would've been tried.

There is also the fact that we can't leave people without protection by taking their guns away. Crime is a reality and people have a right to be capable of defending themselves.

Someone once said that when we had beat cops walking the neighborhood, we didn't have much crime. Cops even got more respect. When cops starting using cars, crime went through the roof.

Is that correct?

"Is that correct?"

No. The numbers don't back up your theory. Crime certainly didn't go "through the roof".

Your link tells me NOTHING about cops on foot vs cops in cars, you PoS.

I asked if it was true that areas where cops patrol on foot or even on bicycles, are safer than areas where they only use cop cars.

How is that question so hard for a dumb fraker to get?

I get it's a lot of numbers to crunch, but the trends are clear.

It does not show the relationship between rise in crime and cops spending most of their time in cars when out of their gawdless stations, instead of walking the streets.

See... on that other thread I said, getting you to do some useful work is like pulling teeth... and here we see this pattern again.

"It does not show the relationship between rise in crime and cops spending most of their time in cars when out of their gawdless stations, instead of walking the streets."

What years did they start driving cars, in your estimation? Use those years, and go forward. The numbers rise a bit, and then drop. It's possible the rise was during a transition time, but in the big statistical picture, it's a blip.

"In some areas, police officers were taken off their beats and placed into cars to combat corruption. After the 1970s Knapp Commission investigations, New York City took most of its beat cops off of the street and placed them in cars. This was in an effort to remove them from the temptations of being corrupted.

One of Rudy Giuliani measures to decrease crime was to reintroduce the beat cops back into the city. So far, this has had mostly positive results."

Yep.. it's what I thought.

Crime statistics and mass murders are two different topics. I wouldn't claim that we haven't always had some mass murders but no where near the number we have today. Some other poster posted that he feels the internet is largely responsible for the increase in mass murders and I think I do agree with that theory.

Supposedly the UK is one big "Gun Free Zone" due to very strict laws in gun ownership... even far more stricter than even the most liberal anti-gun pols propose here in the U.S.

So how has that been working out for them in gun free UK?

So far in 2018... 93 shot around London and here are a few...

February 12 Taxi driver Bulent Kabala, 41, shot dead on a roundabout in Enfield

March 8 Kelvin Odunuyi, 19, shot in Wood Green amid escalating gang warfare

March 14 Joseph Williams-Torres, 20, shot dead in a stationary car in Walthamstow

March 17 Student Russell Jones shot and stabbed to death near Ponders End station in Enfield.

March 25 Abraham Badru, 26, shot in Dalston, East London, without warning

April 2 Tanesha Melbourne, 17, gunned down by drug gang in Tottenham

April 2 Amaan Shakoor, 16, shot in the face outside Walthamstow Leisure Centre

April 9 An armed man was shot dead by police in Romford after threatening people with a gun near a petrol station

May 1 A 30-year-old man died outside Queensbury Tube station in North London after being found with serious injuries

May 5 Rhyhiem Ainsworth Barton was gunned down in a drive by shooting near his home in Kennington, South London

May 6 Man, 22, is shot in New Cross, South East London

May 6 Boy, 13, blasted in head with shotgun while walking with his parents in Wealdstone, near Harrow, in North West London, as 15-year-old also injured in the head in the shooting

June 1 A 24-year-old man is fighting for his life after being shot with a "machine gun" in Brent, north-west London

June 3 Oluwafemi Omosuyi, 22, airlifted to hospital in Southwark, South London, after witnesses reported he was shot in the face with a shotgun. another man, 25, suffered non-life-threatening injuries

June 6 A teenage boy was left fighting for his life after he and two others were shot in Brixton at around 11pm

July 9 Gunman shoots three times at woman, but misses

July 27 Four men aged between 20 and 22 were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after exchanging gun fire with police in Forest Gate

August 20 Armed police swarm a school in Maida Hill, West London, after "shots fired" as terrified staff cower in classroom cupboard

August 20 A woman, 30, and two men - aged 18 and 24 - were rushed to hospital following a drive-by shooting outside Kingsbury Tube station

September 20 A 34-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man were left injured, following a shooting on Essex Road, Islington

September 23 A 19-year-old man died after being gunned down in the street in Walthamstow

Stats on the rest of the year has yet to come out...
Gun Free Zones...even Nation wide... aren't.

Why not blame the perpetrators? Why report their action like it is some sort of accomplishment? Why attempt to understand a sick mind? Maybe a good idea would be to stop reporting the perpetrators name, back ground or motive. Just report when the creature reaches room temperature. Some think shooting up a public place is a gateway to fame.

If arming populations saves lives, why did the UK have 50 gun deaths last year while america had 38,658?

Pegasus.

No law will result in 100% of people obeying it. That's a silly argument.

Let's abolish traffic lights because some people run them?

The regulation of guns has lowered the incidence of gun homicides by a huge margin compared to ours.

The UK on a whole has 1 gun homicides per 1,000,000 people. The US has 160 times that rate.

"There are lots of headlines about the numbing of the American psyche to mass shootings."

Part of this has to do with some people redefining mass shooting so it becomes meaningless, like when someone gets into a shootout with police or a rival gang member, just to inflate the numbers.

#37 | Posted by getoffmedz

Nihilism, depression, and desperation. All of which increase in an economy where those on top live the dream and everyone else suffers.

In a winner take all economy, if you're not one of the winners, your life sucks, there's no way to escape it, and people snap.

And in a country with easy access to guns, when people snap, other people die.

Want to reduce shootings without restricting guns? Make life better for the non-rich instead of making their lives worse so the rich can live even better.

There is a copycat element to this crime which mimics the once frequent hi-jackings of airplanes. It took cooperation with Cuba, returning the hijackers to the US, to end that epidemic. These shootings will be more difficult to stop. An assault weapons ban will help, but it will take ages unless it includes an enforced surrender of weapons. Investing democratically in our schools will help after a decade. Or the nation could resolve to reject violence as a solution to anything. We set such a bad example for our youth to follow, there is little chance for that.

Swift justice, with public hangings of the attackers? That only works if they don't commit suicide first.

Its a very difficult problem.

The first ever mass shooting was way back in the 1800's and it was a postal worker with a bow and arrow who killed 6.

Mass shootings have been a part of the American experience since long before we were born. I agree with Danni that the internet has increased the numbers, I agree with Docnjo that giving them even a post-mortem 15 min. of fame increases them. Speaks is right that if life were made better for lower class Americans it would reduce them. Reducing the number of simi-auto weapons would reduce the size of most of these, and perhaps reduce the number.

Ultimately though they will happen be it with an AR, a Bow and arrow or a knife.
