The US says it will join Australia in developing a naval base in Papua New Guinea (PNG), in an apparent move to curb China's growing influence. Vice-President Mike Pence said the three countries would work together on the facility on Manus Island.

Trump is so dumb, he probably thinks New Guinea is the title of a new South Park episode ... youtu.be

What could go wrong.
If Japan is any indicator, imagine the possible liberty incidents which could occur in PNG!

The end of WWII created the fear of a return to the Great Depression if government spending levels were reduced. The pragmatic solution was continuous military production because supply chains and workers were already in place. Thus began the cold war .

This same static economic logic applies to looming environmental crises. Since the mid-nineteenth century the U.S. economy has been organized around dirty capitalist production. This includes the U.S. military, which is the largest single user of fossil fuels on earth.

Nuclear weapons are attractive because they kill the most people for the least amount of money, another Capitalist triumph. So now we're going to drop a trillion dollars into upgrading our nuclear annihilation capacity. It was possible that the fission-fusion process in the first hydrogen bomb might not be contained and that all life on the planet could be instantly annihilated. This fear was in part why Adolf Hitler abandoned the German effort. Americans moved forward with the test despite that risk.

By the late 1950s the U.S. military had a plan to launch a first-strike nuclear war against Russia that would encompass most of the known world and would ultimately kill, by the military's own estimates, 600 million human beings. Only 100–200 million would be Russian civilians. The rest would be collateral damage. The equivalent of one hundred holocausts. As long as more Americans survived than Russians, that ongoing plan is considered a military success.

I guess we could sit on our hands and allow the PRC bully and control the coasts of every country in the Pacific rim. I remember there was a guy in the 30s that did the same in Europe.

#4, Is that our only choices? We should be grateful that civilians have kept the military in check, so far, and ashamed that some of our military leadership is crazier than Hitler.

When will we recognize that we are guilty of things we accuse our enemies of doing?

Nature has examples of symbiosis, not just competition. For countries, that requires diplomacy, not warfare. Mankind doesn't need no stinking nuclear weapons, especially in the hands of crazy Americans who use them and lose them.

Here's Front Yard Chicken music, as requested

Why do fascists always ban rather than regulate? Why the 40 Maseratis and not infrastructure, schools or anything recognizably intelligently invested?

How long before trump derails this one?

Having a staging base in that area would be optimal, just as we have a naval support facility at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.
