Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Saturday, November 17, 2018

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the new Democratic representative-elect from New York, seized on a social media smear to show she's not afraid to call out sexism or define herself on her own terms. The incoming lawmaker responded Thursday evening after a journalist referred to her as "a girl" in a tweet critical of her clothing with the message "Dark hates light - that's why you tune it out." Her words came in response to a now-deleted tweet from Eddie Scarry, a media reporter for The Washington Examiner, in which he posted a photo of Ocasio-Cortez walking down a hallway alongside a caption that read, "Hill staffer sent me this pic of Ocasio-Cortez they took just now. I'll tell you something: that jacket and coat don't look like a girl who struggles."

Nominated?

Hell, Cortez thought she was going to be inaugurated.

"Ocasio-Cortez spoke Monday at her alma mater of Boston University, raising eyebrows with a comment on implementing her campaign promises if she wins in November.

"It doesn't mean you get everything tomorrow. As much as I would love that, I would love to get inaugurated January 3rd [and] January 4th we're signing health care, we're signing this.""

#7 - She is being inaugurated. It's the definition of "inaugurate" is to formally admit one to office. When we have a Presidential inauguration, we're formally admitting the President-elect to the office of President. Seems odd that someone would think it means something different than what the definition of it is. The inauguration of the President is his official swearing in, and the swearing in of Congress is their inauguration into office. The Presidential inauguration is a big deal, and it's taken on "inauguration" as a huge event and the term "inauguration" came along because that's what it's all about. That doesn't make the word mean something different though. In fact, it doesn't mean anything different.

It's funny what bends some people out of shape these days. I bet Fox News "insider" has a whole article on just this and how the use of that particular word means Ocasio-Cortez is somehow stupid or naive.

I agree.

But the bigger issue, IMO, is the use of social media to try and gain Twitter justice (thanks BruceBanner for the term).

What should have been a call out for a lack of professionalism and pettiness was turned, instead, to an internet storm of misogyny and identity politics.

I really really want millennials to be more involved in politics but not if it means the introduction of endlessly parsed social groups, all outdoing each other for the bottom of the victim heap.

If it had been about one of the other new older Democratic women just elected to Congress, I believe it would have. This didn't happen because AOC is young; it happened because she said she couldn't afford an apartment in DC.

The reverend Martin Luther King Jr. supported the right to free speech, the right to bear arms, believed in a colorblind society, and understood the plight of poor whites and wanted to help them (you know, the Deplorables). So that would make him a Nazi, right? I'll check Wikipedia and find out....

Citation needed.

"believed in a colorblind society,"

Just plain false. He knew better than to suppose we could or should just forget the historical oppression of marginalized groups. In fact, helping said groups meant doing just the opposite.

" and understood the plight of poor whites and wanted to help them (you know, the Deplorables)."

The definition of deplorable is not "poor whites", stupid.

For better or for worse, yes. This.

And I don't think it's because most don't care or that they feel negatively about those issues but because they just see there being bigger fish to fry.

It boils down, to me, to the Dems being too idealistic and constantly working under the impression that they can craft reality as they want it to be, meanwhile ignoring reality as it actually is. Hence why Dem majorities in Congress tend to be fleeting; because after two years they're touting victories in gay marriage, transgender rights and women's pay issues while SS/Medicare/Medicaid continues to go down the crapper, the immigration system remains broken, wages stay stagnant, healthcare remains expensive (although this one actually was address last time, but it needs to be done again), military spending continues to grow while spending to benefit actual citizens gets cut, roads keep crumbling ect ect ect.

I'm not entirely convinced of this. I really do think that most people just don't care, or at least okay with civil rights being denied until they are no longer experiencing a degree of economic anxiety. Since economic anxiety seems to be increasing I don't expect people to find helping others to be a priority any time soon unless it can be indirectly pursued along with the fight against a lunatic in the whitehouse. Even then, a lot of people who actually support a progressive agenda will not take the necessary steps toward making that a reality.

JPW, 99% of what BoyDirkBadweekCooperGimp posts is SJW/fortune cookie Lenin nonsense, which is what killfiles are for... do yourself a HUGE favor and add him to your killfile.

You can thank me later.

"No. You see, DirksTrump, that's called spin."

Spin is what you're doing now. And way to not address the rest of my post.

"The better response..."

You must be so much fun in person, always knowing what someone really should have said (especially a woman, since women don't know these things, ya know).

This could be me talking about Rand Paul. He may be an economic moron but he's good at doing the livestreaming and other hijinks to troll the more standard GOP folk.#24 | POSTED BY INDIANAJONES

Agreed. These rare individuals are gems in our Congress and are working on making government more open and transparent to their voters. Many up and coming pols say they will provide such access in their elections and then get lazy once in office so i gladly celebrate those who work hard for transparency in their congressional life while they're in D.C..

OC now has me as a follower 😎

He's so misogynistic for plonking you! And women have to deal with being plonked every day of their lives!

#69 punchline...like people who twist everything into the same mold just so they can insert themselves with the standard drivel they shart for everything else?

#75 | Posted by jpw at 2018-11-18 09:08 PM | Reply

Speaking of tantrums and punchlines, here comes JPW back to reassert just how little he cares about social justice. We get it: you are a privileged, lazy parasite. You don't have to repeat yourself.

And frankly, your doing so is a bit odd, given your claim that people talk about social justice too much... your criticism of said talk takes up as much space as the talk itself (while being, of course, much less intelligent). It is almost like you DO care about social justice issues.... or at least about keeping them marginalized so that your comfortable position is never threatened. Convenient, huh?

#76 | Posted by DirkStruan at 2018-11-18 09:13 PM | Reply

JP, you fake liberal, you bloated belching fraud. There have always been people like you, only too happy to tell others to be satisfied with their place in life. How fortunate that people of good willl are not so good at listening to such self-important and self-serving clucking as yours (and pity to those people in your life who feel they have to listen to it!).

I wouldn't be caught dead listening to a bunch of middle class hipsters whine about how "bad" their lives have been with ------ poetry intentionally out of rhythm so as to be "edgy".

#80 | Posted by jpw at 2018-11-18 09:27 PM | Reply

Funny thing about beat poetry, JPWIFEBEATER: unlike your hobbies, it doesn't kill or maim anyone. And that finger snapping you talk so much about exercises the same muscles as pulling a trigger. What's not to like?

#81 | Posted by DirkStruan at 2018-11-18 09:27 PM | Reply

Hey, I get it, JPustule: you'd rather just laugh at a civil rights march getting broken up by the cops or something similar. Maybe belittle a female employee. Things that are more your speed.

And hey, bound to be another mass shooting soon and we know how you love those. You can rant and rave about how (ummm errr SOMEHOW) it is actually the fault of people who want to take guns AWAY from people.

Pretentious? Nah. It is more considerate and less disruptive than full applause in a small space. Not that I expect you to understand PC notions like "politeness."

The reverend Martin Luther King Jr. supported the right to free speech, the right to bear arms, believed in a colorblind society, and understood the plight of poor whites and wanted to help them (you know, the Deplorables). So that would make him a Nazi, right? I'll check Wikipedia and find out....
