Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, November 07, 2018

President Donald Trump paused his post-midterms press briefing Wednesday to yell at CNN's Jim Acosta, wagging his finger and calling him a "rude, terrible person" and adding that CNN should be "ashamed" to have him in their employ. ... When NBC's Peter Alexander tried to stand up for his peer, Trump turned his ire on him as well. "I'm not a big fan of yours either, to be honest," the President said.

You must think Trump is as helpless as a kitten to want to protect him from a reporter being a reporter.

All Acosta did was ask a good question and refuse to back down when a politician tried to weasel out of answering.

You want to see something revealing about trump?

He flubbed the opening sentence of his speech today. Saying "For the MIDTOWN year" instead of "MIDTERM year."

But trump can't say OOPS or correct himself. So he goes with: "For the midtown AND midterm year."

He does this all the time in speeches. It shows he's pathologically unable to admit a mistake, and his automatic response is to double down and stand by his mistake.

Back in 2015, the House Republican majority changed the rules in the House to make it easier for them to subpoena the Obama administration. Rather than involve members of the Democratic minority in the process at all, they simply authorized their own committee chairs to unilaterally issue subpoenas to anyone they wished.

Come January, that may well come back to haunt the dwindling number of Republicans left in the U.S. House of Representatives. The result: for the first time, Donald Trump and his administration may soon face some real oversight

Whatever Trump anticipates coming out, whether through news reports, the Mueller investigation, House investigations and/or NY state investigations, must be pretty damning for his to go on the defensive like this and ratchet up his angry rhetoric in this way. Real acts of journalism did arise from time-to-time. WaPo's coverage of the Solyndra issue was excellent, for example. The '12 campaign coverage was the most blatant example of the press being in the tank for Obama, but countless other examples exist as well.

Trump got literally hours of free exposure throughout the primaries and the election during which he got to blab on and on and was never really pressed to answer any hard questions. Then, if that wasn't obsequious enough, he got tons of praise for being willing to "talk" to the press when other candidates didn't . Since he became president his press availability has been drastically reduced, and during most of the off camera interviews he does, he is allowed to ramble on, repeating lies and buzzwords, and often making very little sense, all without being challenged in any real way. So, spare me all these crocodile tears about Trump being treated unfairly by the press. The press indulged him for months because it was good for their ratings and that indulgence coupled with a lack of media vetting is one of the reasons he is president today.

#89 Gal,

I absolutely agree that Trump got all sorts of uncritical coverage during the primary. Keep in mind, until he won the nomination, Trump had a decades-long relationship with the media. EVERYBODY on the left, especially the Clinton campaign, wanted him to win the primary because it was believed that he was the most beatable of the GOP field. The candidate that concerned the Clinton camp the most was Rubio.

The media treatment of Trump is a problem in the whipsaw effect of going from lapdogs to attack dogs with the changing of the guard. Add to that countless examples of, to be charitable, shoddy reporting, extreme and overtly obvious bias - trust in our news media is at an all-time low and it's not because Trump screams "Fake news!"

I want our news media to be extremely critical and skeptical of ALL of our leaders. But they are not. And it shows.

Media coverage of Trump (and outlets like Fox and WSJ are included, which brings the average down a bit) has been 92% negative. We've had no major foreign policy blunders, a scorching economy and boilerplate conservative governance out of this administration. Trump is unique in that he says publicly what past presidents would only say privately - he has little-to-no filter. That said, it's ridiculous that his coverage has been 92% negative when we try to take an objective look at things.

Trump has perfected access journalism. The reason he doesn't get pressed in those off camera interviews is because the reporters know they won't get to interview him again if they push too hard. Some of those interviews are simply astonishing in the lack of follow up the journalists pursue. It's journalistic malpractice, but, hey, at least they got the interview! I wish they confronted him half as much as they confronted Hillary, but they don't.

I understand that he says a lot of offensive ----, Alex.

That doesn't change the fact that his foreign policy has (so far) been without any MAJOR blunders (no Iraq war, no false red-lines, no leading from behind, etc) and our economy is on fire at the moment and actions taken by his administration can be pointed to as a contributing factor.

In spite of all of the horrible things he says, 92% is absurd and I'd probably peg it at 94% if we remove Fox and the WSJ editorial pages. It may be bad but it's not that bad.

Not with any significant evidence to back it.

Everything else looks like economic momentum when viewed in the broader context.

California's homeless problem is from rampant gentrification resulting in middle-class people suddenly being unable to afford paying rent and mortgages.

Who is better equipped to fix this situation, the party of tax cuts for the rich or the party that always seems to have a messaging problem?

You should be advocating for higher taxes on Cali's rich to pay for programs the will reverse the conditions that caused the homelessness in the first place.

Here's a scholarly article on the subject ...

Gentrification and the Racialized Geography of Home Equity
journals.sagepub.com

Wealth inequality -- as in all forms of economic inequality -- goes hand in hand with gentrification, all which results in people who were once middle-class becoming homeless due to them being unable to pay the rapidly rising costs of rent and home ownership.
