Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Money is pouring in for a California teacher seen brawling with a 14-year-old student on video at Maywood Academy High School. Marston Riley, 64, was arrested Friday on suspicion of child abuse after police say the black music teacher punched a teenage student who continued to harass him with racial slurs, according to The Los Angeles Times. The video shows the student throwing a basketball at the teacher and asking him "why you wisecracking, my n-----?" Riley eventually approaches the student and begins punching him. He was released from jail Saturday on a $50,000 bail -- and a GoFundMe page aims to raise that money for Riley. The student, who was not identified by authorities, was rushed to the hospital with "moderate" injuries, according to The Los Angeles Times. That GoFundMe page was created by Cecilia Diaz Jimenez, who says she worked at the high school where the fight happened for four years. As of Monday afternoon, it had amassed just over $37,000 .

What was it that P. T. Barnum is frequently credited with saying?

There's a sucker puncher born every minute?

He should lose his job for throwing the first punch.

I prefer to support teachers who don't sucker punch children.

Some people prefer black teachers to just stand there and tolerate racial abuse directed at them personally by a trespasser in their classroom repeatedly calling them the n word.

That's what's supposed to happen. You can't beat the ---- out of people because they say mean words.

A more recent KCBS (or CBS2, if you prefer) news story says this teacher had been the victim of both verbal and physical abuse in the past. There is even video of another incident in which he physically defended himself. He snapped on this kid. Should he have? Of course not. Is it very, very understandable? Absolutely. After all of his past issues, he shouldn't have been in the classroom. He should have been given an easy ride to retirement.

#5 And it wasn't a sucker punch. I know this has been thoroughly discussed on the other thread, but here it goes again: The kid got within two feet of this 64 your old black man, called him the N word repeatedly, threw a ball at him, etc. He was willfully, knowingly setting this man up for a physical confrontation. Other students knew it was coming. The kid's friends had their phones out recording in anticipation of it. The only "evidence" you've given that the kid wasn't expecting a fight is that his stance wasn't proper for a fight and that the teacher didn't square up and challenge the kid to a fight, a la some Victorian-era sense of gentlemanly sportsmanship. "Sir, you have offended me! I hereby challenge you to a bout of fisticuffs to settle the matter! Square up, sir, and defend yourself!" I've never, ever seen a fight go down like that - not a street fight, anyway, which is what this essentially was. Most of them start with a lot of jawing until one guy gets mad enough to start swinging.

We really should tone down the rhetoric of the 'sucker punch' narrative. Let's call it what it plainly was, battery of a minor and child abuse.

He was assaulted and hit by the kid first. The kid deserves expulsion at the least but preferable should face time behind bars for a premeditated hate crime.

"He was assaulted and hit by the kid first. "

If true, and the kid made an attempted or actual forceful strike, the guy was only defending himself.

#12 Its pretty clear in the video, you can see the kid attack the teacher with the ball.

Unless you are at a Trump rally, of course.

Indiana Jones then the teacher is justified in beating the ---- out if the kid..

I believe in fighting back more vigorously and ferociously than you were attacked.

"Proportional response" is only a term that only leftist like to use when criticizing Israel.

Yeah you go ahead and believe that.

You are in for a big disappointment and a lot of jail time.

Because it's the law, dumbass.

"The consequences of violating the principle of proportionality are absolutely devastating to a claim of self-defense. Indeed, courts frequently refuse to allow the words "self-defense" to be spoken in front of the jury at all if it deems the defender's use of force was excessive."

Enjoy prison.

Sorry --------.

Your article doesn't conflict with what I said. I'm not advocating chasing an unarmed burgler out of your house and into the street and shooting them in the head.... But if someone jumps me and I get the upper hand, I'm gonna keep punching until someone pulls me off because I don't know their threat level.

A firefighter in Texas was just convicted of murder in a very similar scenario.
