Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The Florida city commissioner who confronted and shot an alleged shoplifter at a military surplus store earlier this month was charged with murder Friday. Michael Dunn, who serves as Lakeland's city commissioner for the Southwest district, was confronting a man police said had taken a hatchet from the store he owns when he shot and killed him. ... "At no time did the victim appear to have made any threatening movements towards the suspect," the affidavit states. "Further, witness testimony ... revealed that the victim did not make any verbal threats towards the suspect."

Murdering shoplifters... OK or criminal?

We retort, you deride.

He had to be shot, he could have shoplifted again! His murderer needs to go to prison and people like him should not be allowed to own guns. I haven't seen any of his psychological history, nor his arrest record but I will be willing to guess that there were reasons in his history which would have disqualified him from owning a gun if we had real background checks in this country.

This murderer likely thinks he is Christian.

Some gun divas wait their entire lives without a chance to actually use their gun to shoot someone. This, apparently, was just too good an opportunity to pass up.

If he happens to get away with this, the next time it will be, "But, Officer, I could tell the dead guy was thinking about going out to his car and getting the antenna!".

Ironic a Michael Dunn years ago was convicted of murder in Florida for killing a black man for playing music too loud.

The shooting of 17-year-old high school student Jordan Davis happened on Friday, November 23, 2012, at a GATE petroleum gas station in Jacksonville, Florida, United States by Michael David Dunn, a 45-year-old software developer, following an argument over loud music played by Davis and his three friends. Dunn was convicted on three counts of attempted second-degree murder for firing at three other teenagers who were with Davis and one count of firing into a vehicle. The jury could not reach a verdict about whether to convict Dunn for the murder of Jordan Davis at the first trial. In a second trial, Dunn was found guilty of the first degree murder of Jordan Davis.[2]

Can somebody please point me in the direction of the original antenna thread? I missed that the first time around.

You might find some old posts by Buffalo Bob on Google. He claimed a car antenna was a better defense weapon than a gun. It's been a running joke ever since.

Unfortunately, the original thread - like all Retort threads over 6 or so months old - are permanently gone. There are, however, some remnants here and there, such as...

"Guy pulls a gun first--takes your gun. I would say any criminal that tries to hold someone up with a knife is a fool, but if he has a knife and you make a move, you could be sliced pretty bad and there's no guarantee you shoot him or don't have the gun used on you. No guarantee the bullet won't go through him and kill someone else. I'd rather have a car antennae than a gun in that situation. Even a rock or a club." - Buffalo_bOoB, inducing many a facepalm

Thing is, if you sharpen the non-bristly end into a shiv, you will no longer be able to hang it on the finishing nail sticking out of your bathroom wall.

Thanks all! I've seen the running joke but never the original comment. Awesome, epic facepalm.

If you ever see a joking reference to "smokestacks on the moon," that's also one of Buffalo Bob's gems.

True... so you stick it behind your ear, ever ready to do damage .. or brush teeth.

When I once jokingly claimed I could take out an elephant with a toothbrush, Buffalo Bob said "then I bet you could take out a whole village with a toilet brush". He was really annoyed when he said that.

I don't know why but I find that line really funny.

Meaning what? If you're holding a gun in Florida and the person you're pointing it at makes a verbal threat, its OK to pull the trigger? Are we really a society in which the only thing that matters is personal property? How do these conversations become so devoid of reason and decency?

He finally got to use that gun!

I hope he gets his money's worth.

Wrap plastic wrap around the toothbrush (bristle end) a few dozen times then use a lighter to melt all the plastic together. File down on concrete wall or floor and you have a weapon on par with razor blade; at least effective enough for intended prison use, that is.
