Soyuz is one of the oldest rocket designs but also one of the safest. The malfunction appeared to occur around what is termed "staging", where the ascending vehicle goes through the process of discarding its empty fuel segments.

The onboard astronauts were certainly aware that something was not right because they reported feeling weightless when they should have felt pushed back in their seats. The escape systems are tested and ready for exactly this sort of eventuality. It would have been an uncomfortable ride back to Earth, however. The crew would have experienced very high acceleration on the return (ballistic re-entry... not recommended.. but Soyuz and the Chinese Shenzou can take the punishment.... G forces of over 8-G are not uncommon).

USA, on the other hand, had a Israeli and an incompetent Hindu (who was only there for PC reasons.. she kept crying all the time during training. The Israeli was no better) on the shuttle. Too much negative energy jinxed the mission and it blew up.

No American vehicle can withstand a ballistic re-entry. And unlike Russians and Chinese who can eject the whole capsule AWAY from the boosters, US space-craft have no ejection capability.

In short, want to die? Go up .. or come down...in an American rocket.

Elon Musk is America's best chance to go back up in space and stay there without begging the Russians for a ride.

Bezos' Blue Origin is a sleeping giant. Don't count them out.

Ballistic descent aka falling like a rock.

Yeah. Not pretty.

Bezos' Blue Origin is a sleeping giant. Don't count them out.

True. But Blue Origin's rockets right now are a lot smaller.

However, if you see their test videos... they are very impressive. So yeah... can't count them out.

The US mission to the moon is the greatest mechanical engineering achievement in the history of mankind. Everyone aware of it in the world watched it and celebrated it. This Russian technology is possibly the second greatest achievement. Both US and Russian astronauts were on that flight and they are both doing fine. What kind of madness is it to partner in these efforts while reigniting the cold war? Oh, I almost forgot, its about keeping domestic populations in a perpetual state of fear as a method of control, while pretending we are free.

How are you not free? Americans have a greater degree of liberty than 99.99 percent of all humans that have ever lived. You are free to spout your Statist propaganda every day. In your beloved Marxist states, you would be locked up.

How are you not free?

When you are doped up to the eyeballs with lead and fluoride, you would feel free wearing a straitjacket.

#10, nulli, no doubt about it, we enjoy more freedom of speech than many countries in this world.

But, we have more laws and reasons for locking people up than any other country in the world. And the juggernaut for almost every American is they are trapped in debt and can never stop working until they drop dead. Looking at the bigger picture, we all live in a rigged economic and political system, which will reward you if you agree to go along to get along, but will punish you if you see things differently. This problem could conceivably fix itself if people who actually believe in equal opportunity and rights for all men and freedom of expression were to gain leadership positions. But there are structural impediments to such an outcome in control of the mass media and unelected institutions in the unaccountable Deep State.

Many Americans are free, especially if they are tenured Professors, or take an oath of poverty, or are born into enough wealth to escape a lifetime of debt. There is another category of people that enjoy considerable freedom that committed their lives to working for the State and therefore have great security in their retirement years, in exchange for always obeying your supervisor. These people are under direct attack by the ruling class at the moment, who are determined to break the postal and teachers unions as they have broken so many others. I'm sure tens of millions of Americans fit into one of these categories, including you, which clouds your thinking. Yet, hundreds of millions of American do not belong to any of these groups, because Capitalism.
