Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

US share markets have suffered their sharpest one-day falls in months, as fears about rising interest rates, inflation, trade tensions intensified. The tech-heavy Nasdaq led the declines, sliding 4%, or 315.9 points, to 7,422. The Dow Jones and S&P 500 also fell by more than 3%, with losses accelerating towards the end of the day. Netflix fell 8%, while Amazon slid 6%.

We needed a correction and am still holding on investing more [holding cash on the 'sidelines' to take advantage of the lower stock prices] to see if the market will trend further down. Also, anyone with a 401k is receiving more shares of the funds in their account with the lower stock prices.

For those worried about the market, it has dropped less that 4% so far. In Oct 87 the DOW dropped over 22% in one day and that is why I consider this just a minor correction [by comparison] at this point.

Trump is just protecting his investments like everyone else but it would be dumb to listen to him. After the 2008 crisis, every reputable economist in America said that the only way America can be healthy again is when rates rise to what they were pre-recession (or at least close to it). Now, rich people of course are fighting this because it doesn't help them. Technically, it doesn't hurt them much either but fighting for status quo is a smart money move in many situations like this.

"The con man said stock market highs prove he's awesome.

Now the con man says the stock market was overdue for a correction and it has nothing to do with his policies.

Yet you still listen to the con man."

The stock market can be incredible and still need a correction. The easiest way to explain it is to say that the higher it is before the correction, the higher it will be after the correct. While that is over-simplistic and doesn't account for many factors, it's the overall sentiment. Nothing con about this. Trying to spread hate because you don't understand something makes YOU the bad guy, no one else.

You're right. Thanks Obama!

The drop is from Trump's trade war and some fears of higher interest rates/inflation.

And the reason we can drop 1,500 points? Because Obama brought the DOW from 7,950 to 19,827 when he left office. And his policies continued to push it to 25,000. Trump didn't pass any economic policies until it hit that mark.

Stock market spent the first 7 months of the year in correction. Now it's tariff's coming home to roost. Just look at the automotive stocks. Ford alone says the tariffs have cost them a cool BILLION dollars and therefore plans to speed up JOB ELIMINATION. That will ripple. The other auto manufacturers are all feeling it as well. Sales were already down and someone will be paying for the tariffs...

The Dow dropping in 87 was because of automation and no safeguards that has been resolved for decades. Not that the market can't fall fast... Today the NYSE sets 3 levels 7%, 13% and 20% of the value of the S&P 500. Levels one and two result in a 15 minute halt in trading unless it's after 3:25PM - which results in a halt of trading for the day. Level 3 shuts down trading for they day. Computer automation was the key issue on that day though. It happened 10/19/87 - sadly I remember it well because it's the day my father passed away.

Bernie Sanders

@SenSanders
Replying to @SenSanders
it is time to do what Americans overwhelmingly want: abolish the cruel, dysfunctional immigration system we have today and pass comprehensive immigration reform. That will mean restructuring the agencies that enforce our immigration laws, including ICE. We must not be about tearing small children away from their families. We must not be about deporting DREAMers, young people who have lived in this country virtually their entire lives.

Uh oh bernie disagrees with you on immigration. More proof that you DO support LESSER EVIL candidates.

#36 | Posted by SpeakSoftly at 2018-10-11 02:50 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

I don't disagree with Bernie at all. People need to enter our country legally.
Not by running through the desert at night or being packed into sweltering tractor trailers.

I haven't heard Bernie advocating for open borders or to allow every car and truck to pass without inspection.

You're an emotional trainwreck over a handful of crying children
but refuse to address the exploitation of these people once they arrive.

You've also failed to address how they pay federal taxes, receive and pay for medical, and other state/federal burdens they represent.
I advocate legal entry, fair pay and tax, freedom to move, travel, rent, and bank, protection from predators and extortionists, and protection from discrimination. They deserve to live free from hiding from law enforcement. They deserve an opportunity.

All of that exists when they enter the country legally.

"Instead of preventing trafficked children, you'd rather build strawmen."

Saying parents who bring their children here with good intentions are engaging in trafficking is the straw man.

Prevention of any trade has a supply side and a demand side. Sanctuary cities help police attack the endpoints of the demand, by providing a venue for victims to come forward without negative repercussions.

By opposing sanctuary cities, you make it easier for the criminals engaged in trafficking children.

--I haven't heard Bernie advocating for open borders or to allow every car and truck to pass without inspection.

In fact, just the opposite. Sanders was denouncing illegalimmigration for hurting American workers before he ran for President.

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in 2007: "I happen to think that the Congress should be spending a lot more time discussing this issue and making it easier for us to create decent paying jobs for American workers instead of allowing corporate interest to drive wages down by importing more and more people into this country to do the work that Americans should be doing."

Maybe it can be done better, but at the present, I don't know how one would go about separating a trafficking victim from their trafficker without physically separating them, and determining and verifying their parental status.

Otherwise, you're just passing off human trafficking victims like you don't care.

So tell me. Is every person who is illegally entering our country with a child in tow, supposed to be believed at face value in regards to whatever statements of fact they make, without any means of validating their claims?

Should the child be spoken to in private? Is that an acceptable separation? Can DNA swabs be processed onsite to quickly verify patronage?

It is POSSIBLE. I do somewhat agree with Trump on this but there were better ways to handle it than acting like a 3rd grader. China has run out of control since given Most Favored Nation Trading status and being allowed into the WTO - both sides have allowed this. I know what sort of tariffs our goods face going into China and it's about time the playing field was leveled. Throw in the fact the Chinese have controlled their currency valuation the whole time and are presently devaluing it even more than it was. That said in the long run I do think the tactic may work except the WTO will likely get involved and penalize the US - that's the most likely outcome anyhow. The American firms and then people will suffer as a result. Keep in mind China is in this for the long haul and unlike the US they will play the long game - that's the advantage of a planned society and single party...
