It is difficult to exaggerate the importance of every nation making a little bit of everything themselves. Telephones, circuit breakers, tires are a few examples of things which are critical to our national defense.

Russia showed the world how vulnerable and stupid we are.

Expect the rest to pile on and take full advantage.

Thanks Humpy.

I've spent the past 25 years in telcom and gov't communications. I've seen the network grow from copper and punch blocks, to electronic switching systems, to fiber, routers, and switches. The hardware we're talking about exists in the hundreds of millions of chassis, cards, and components installed.

This is a huge deal, a critical intrusion, and could cost hundreds of billions to root out, harden, secure, replace.

Job security for me, lost revenue and security for America.

Related: China stealing gov't and private sector trade secrets and natsec info. This is real.

This eclipses Russia's goofy facebook meme operation, Donner. my miles.
You may not be paying attention because you don't understand the tech.

But this is tantamount to bugging the entire nations telcom and enterprise infrastructure with hacks, backdoors, malware, etc.
This is a hardware level intrusion. This is bigger than you know, and far worse than the article is leading you to believe.

This is, I suspect, just the tip of the iceberg. It's the one hardware device we've found, probably one of a dozen different they have slipped into the supply chain.

Also, while they outed Amazon and Apple, they held the bulk of the 30 companies known to have been using these boards close to the vest. Did you know Microsoft manufactures all of their own servers right down to the processors? It's the only way...the ONLY way...to ensure they can trust that that their hardware has not been corrupted. Pretty big deal given that they basically run "the cloud" as we know it.
