Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Thursday, October 04, 2018

Nested on the servers' motherboards, the testers found a tiny microchip, not much bigger than a grain of rice, that wasn't part of the boards' original design. During the ensuing top-secret probe, investigators determined that the chips allowed the attackers to create a stealth doorway into any network that included the altered machines.

Amazon reported the discovery to U.S. authorities, sending a shudder through the intelligence community. Elemental's servers could be found in Department of Defense data centers, the CIA's drone operations, and the onboard networks of Navy warships.

To be fair, Elemental didn't build the circuit boards in question, that would have been Supermicro, a San Jose based company that sells motherboards that it has manufactured in China. The main reason that isn't in the header is the character limit.

I know it goes against DR tradition to even click on an article much less read it for most of you, but you may want to take the time to read this one.

Quite unsettling. Best line in the article:

"Two of Elemental's biggest early clients were the Mormon church, which used the technology to beam sermons to congregations around the world, and the adult film industry, which did not."

That some high level technical information of real value.

#6 | Posted by ChiefTutMoses at 2018-10-04 12:10 PM | Reply

So we have the details of how people who represented themselves as members of the People's Liberation Army approached subcontractors, and through either bribes or threats of inspection coerced manufacturers to alter the designs of the motherboards and then how they delivered the microchips to the manufacturers for installation. When approached with evidence of this behavior the Chinese government comes out with the following:

"China is a resolute defender of cybersecurity." The ministry added that in 2011, China proposed international guarantees on hardware security along with other members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a regional security body. The statement concluded, "We hope parties make less gratuitous accusations and suspicions but conduct more constructive talk and collaboration so that we can work together in building a peaceful, safe, open, cooperative and orderly cyberspace."

Now it's possible that this isn't orchestrated at the top level of the Chinese government, but I'd really like to know how they demonstrated that to investigators. This is like straight out of a movie. Really scary stuff.

This makes me totally comfortable that our voting machines are completely secure, and that we don't have any reason whatsoever to have an independent entity examine them or the code.

Which nation intercepts ALL global communications? is a better question.

There needs to be an international anti-hacking treaty for nation States along the lines of nuclear weapons bans, which are, unfortunately, also in a precarious position.

None of this can be accomplished without building trust and verification methods. We are deliberately going in the opposite direction.

None of my comments changes the fact that this Chinese attack is a grave problem. A problem of controlling our own destiny. A problem which can only be addressed with better quality control and more domestic manufacturing.

Insisting some Computers are built in America? A lot too late on that one. That ship sailed 20+ years ago and will take just as long to build back. We do not have the technology necessary to build the chips needed here anymore. Even the design is often done in China or India anymore. We have off-shored leading edge tech. I'm actually not aware of any descent processors made in the USA any more not to mention RAM chips. We don't even have current die tech.

"That's what you can see from the outside. But what went on inside this building in 2015 has attracted a lot of attention in both U.S. and Russian media. The company that operated inside 55 Savushkina was called the Internet Research Agency. But unofficially, and more commonly, it was known as the "troll factory."

Hundreds worked here, and 13 people, including a man with ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, were recently named in an indictment connected to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election."

Until you offer a better explanation of why a "progressive sanders supporter" spends all day defending trump and republicans while attacking liberals, that is the most plausible explanation.

en.wikipedia.org

"members of the "brigades" were paid 85 rubles (about US$3) or more per comment, depending on whether the comment received replies. Some were paid as much as 600,000 roubles (about US$21,000) for leaving hundreds of comments on negative press articles on the internet, and were presented with iPads. A number of high-profile bloggers were also mentioned as being paid for promoting Nashi and government activities. The Federal Youth Agency, whose head (and the former leader of Nashi) Vasily Yakemenko was the highest-ranking individual targeted by the leaks, refused to comment on authenticity of the e-mails.[22][25]

In 2013, a Freedom House report stated that 22 of 60 countries examined have been using paid pro-government commentators to manipulate online discussions, and that Russia has been at the forefront of this practice for several years, along with China and Bahrain.[26][27] In the same year, Russian reporters investigated the St. Petersburg Internet Research Agency, which employs at least 400 people. They found that the agency covertly hired young people as "Internet operators" paid to write pro-Kremlin postings and comments, smearing opposition leader Alexei Navalny and U.S. politics and culture.[28][29]
" Each commenter was to write no less than 100 comments a day, while people in the other room were to write four postings a day, which then went to the other employees whose job was to post them on social networks as widely as possible.[28]"

Pathetic way to make a living man.

GlobalFoundries is an American semiconductor foundry headquartered in Santa Clara, California, United States.[4] GlobalFoundries was created by the divestiture of the manufacturing arm of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) on March 2, 2009, expanded through the acquisition of Chartered Semiconductor on January 23, 2010, and further expanded through the acquisition of IBM Microelectronics on July 1, 2015. The Emirate of Abu Dhabi is the owner of the company through its subsidiary Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC). On March 4, 2012, AMD announced they divested their final 14% stake in the company, which concluded AMD's multi-year plan to divest its manufacturing arm.[5]

The firm manufactures integrated circuits in high volume mostly for semiconductor companies such as AMD, Broadcom, Qualcomm, and STMicroelectronics. It has five 200 mm wafer fabrication plants in Singapore, one 300 mm fabrication plant in both Germany and Singapore, and three fabrication plants in the United States: one 200 mm fabrication plant in Vermont (where it is the largest private employer) and two 300 mm fabrication plants in New York.[6]en.wikipedia.org
