More people were shot, and more killed, when the perpetrator of an "active shooting" in the US had a semiautomatic rifle, according to a new study of 248 incidents published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study, which examined only a small subset of America's shootings, found that incidents in which at least one of the perpetrator's guns was a semiautomatic rifle left an average of 4.25 people killed and 5.48 wounded. Shootings where the perpetrator did not have a semiautomatic rifle, but instead used handguns, shotguns or other types of rifles, left an average of 2.5 people killed and three people wounded.

Whelp, there goes my reasoning that semi-auto rifles create more bodily damage and, therefore, should be regulated to a higher degree than handguns.

No one could have predicted that Semiauto rifles are more deadly than handgun shootings.

What's next? Semiautos more deadly than sticks, hammers, cars, and second hand car antennas?

That's sort of weird. I've seen what you can do with a good rifle while hunting, but I guess the handgun is just as deadly because it's close up and personal?

When I swore off hunting, after my third bad incident, it was because I missed the wrong way. I was using a scoped out .30-06, and the round severed both front legs of the deer right below the elbow, and it still tried to crawl away on it's stumps, leaving a trail of blood. And my friend, who my criminal friends call "Manhunter", said "Shoot it again, HeliumRat, shoot it again". That freaked even him out.

I mostly hunted venomous serpents which where a real danger on my farm growing up, killing well over a thousand (my neighbors kid died playing "jump the snake", she was six) but once I shot some kind of giant prehistoric frog about the size of Louisiana that was probably the last of its kind, and in the second I accidentally shot a protected species of hawk. I picked it up and held as it bled out and died in my hands, gasping for breath. God I felt really felt bad about those.

I still target shoot. I make trick shots with shotguns and rifles, and I'm a nearly Olympic-level marksman, and I have the army medals to prove it.

But the point is handguns are used in over 90% of gun crimes, and maybe over 97% depending on your study. If you want to channel your inner Nixon (he wanted to ban hand-guns) maybe we could compromise. But that's as far you get. Stay away from my SKS Commando and my Remington pump-action tube-mag, or you are going to have a real problem trying to confiscate them.

Difference in hydrostatic shock is huge in comparing rifles to handguns. Last summer I went to a seminar where meat targets were shot and the wound cavities were so much larger in the rifles vs handguns. Mainly .223 vs 9mm

#6 | Posted by byrdman at 2018-09-12 02:23 AM | Reply

#6 Yeah, that's because .223 high velocity full metal metal jacket tumbles when it hit flesh, creating a massive bleeding internal wound. Other rounds don't. There is a story about why, because it was discovered after we came up with the "Laws of War", so it isn't covered by them. And that's why the 5.56mm M-16 is more effective than the 7.62mm AK-47. I'll look up a good article and post it for you. Give me a few.

Okay, it's the Hague convention, I remember that now:

"The Contracting Parties agree to abstain from the use of bullets which expand or flatten easily in the human body, such as bullets with a hard envelope which does not entirely cover the core, or is pierced with incisions."

Here's a good bunch of arguments about it that pretty much explain everything: www.abovetopsecret.com

I don't buy some of them, like the one that says they changed the old round for one that could punch through body armor better but doesn't tumble, because I'm pretty good at physics and I know that's wrong - the FMJ round would still punch through and begin to tumble after it got through the armor. But most of it is pretty illuminating.

The study doesn't even get past the second sentence without grossly misrepresenting a fact, somehow has missed every other study of firearm lethality, and didn't even bother to include Columbine in their measurements. Ouch.

What's the argument? That guns aren't designed to be efficiently lethal?

Maybe we could tighten that a little more............. Why would you use a single shot gun of any kind or even a bolt action rifle? What a stupid thing to even think.

Who buys FMJ ammo to go hunting? A HP or balistic tip does more dammage than a FMJ. The HP's you are refering to only perform that way in a real slow twist rifle.

Key word being "peer." Let's look at the study's authors.

Erik Goralnik, MD, MS, is Medical Director of Emergency Preparedness at Brigham and Women's Hospital and is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, Harvard Medical School. He is also an Instructor of Health Policy and Management, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Justin C McCarty is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine

Elzerie de Jager is a phd student and research fellow at the Brigham Center for Surgery and Public Health

Are you one of their peers?

The study group should have added a gun expert to its list of authors.

Their result shouldn't be unexpected though. Lethality has been studied for decades. Rifles > Intermediate > Pistols.

So then, what are the numbers comparing kkkops shooting unarmed Black people with handguns versus kkkops shooting unarmed Black people with rifles?

How about kkkops shooting unarmed White people versus kkkops shooting unarmed Black people?

How about the matrix of White/Black, White/White, Black/White, and Black/Black?

Ow, my brain hurts.

That had to be sarcasm. The deadliest weapon to you as a person on this earth is a scoped-out .30-06 bolt-action in the hands of some-one that can use it.

Hands down.

#39 dude, you seriously need a gun.

But with all brutality, if you are going to carry a handgun, carry a taser instead. And ladies (like #39) this is especially important: if it's in pistol range, it's in taser range. And you get two shots with a good one. And look what it does.

Handguns realty are just for cops and criminals. To explain it to you, here's Lynyrd Skynyrd - "Saturday Night Special" : www.youtube.com
