Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Ford Motor Co. had a quick and firm response Sunday to a Tweet by President Donald Trump that tariffs on Chinese goods would force the automaker to build its Focus Active crossover in the U.S. Citing Trump's tariffs, on August 31, Ford Motors announced that it's abandoning plans to sell the Focus Active -- which the company makes in China -- in the United States.

"...This car can now be BUILT IN THE U.S.A. and Ford will pay no tariffs!"

The car always could have been built in the USA. There was nothing stopping Ford Motors from building the car in the USA if Ford Motors had wanted to do so.

That was not the issue.

The issue that Pres Trump seems to overlook is whether or not it is profitable enough when the car is built in the USA.

Well. It's Sniper.

I'm sure he'd prefer it to read, "Ford Bigly Saved thanks to President for Life and Stable Genius, Donald Trump."

Eff Ford. They dropped their entire car lineup except the Mustang. Once the Fusion phases out in a couple of years they will only sell crossovers, trucks and the Mustang.

cause their cars suck and they know people will buy hondas and toyotas if they want a sedan.

Where's Nulli to explain to Trump that you can't abolish the laws of supply and demand?

#11 | Posted by JOE at 2018-09-12 08:47 AM | Reply

Its called knowing your customer base. In America Ford sells trucks and muscle cars. Everything else takes up space on the lot. In Europe and Asia they sell small cars and putting big trucks on the lot is a waste of space.

trying to squirm out a reason why this doesn't count and Trump is right.

Actually, they are once again run by bean-counters. Car sales in all segments are plummeting so they decided to dump cars. They did something sort of similar in the '90's. Back then SUV's were all the rage so they let their car lineup flounder and then the SUV fad dropped off and they were left behind their competition trying to play catch-up. Ever since Mulally left I feared Ford would lose their focus (no pun intended).

There are 24 Japanese automobile manufacturing plants and 43 design centers in the USA. For some reason, completely unknown to Trump, the Japanese dominate the car market, while Ford and GM Only want to make BIG cars and trucks. This is a disastrous plan in the face of global warming. GM has 12 US plants and Ford has 8. The Japanese are thriving because of the high performance of US workers. GM and Ford only care about CEO bonuses.

Ford acts like this is all the consumer's fault for wanting SUVs more than they want cars. But it's the result of years of pro-SUV marketing to MAKE consumers want SUVs more than cars because they have a higher profit margin on SUVs.

They hyped and sold SUVs for years now they cry that that's all the consumers want.

Yesssss. The most fun to drive, and the best to get out of snow.

Mine: 2002 Solara SEV6, Manual. It drives like a dream. I've got another car, but I can't give it up.

I live by the ford mustang plant and the roads they drive them on to get them loaded at the railhead is complete crap. You would not want a mustang if you knew the first six miles driven off the line was over potholes and craters the size of armadillos....

I find I tend toward the roads where the engineers got to stretch their legs and have some fun. One particular road here winds southeast across a grid, through some very pretty neighborhoods. In south St. Louis, the road along River Des Peres was my favorite growing up.
