Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Racist and anti-Semitic content has surged on shadowy social media platforms -- spiking around President Trump's Inauguration Day and the "Unite the Right Rally" in Charlottesville -- spreading hate speech and extremist views to mainstream audiences, according to an analysis published this week.

A Quantitative Approach to Understanding Online Antisemitism: Although the study of antisemitism and hate is not new, the scale and rate of change of online data has impacted the efficacy of traditional approaches to measure and understand this worrying trend. In this paper, we present a large-scale, quantitative study of online antisemitism. We collect hundreds of million comments and images from alt-right Web communities like 4chan's Politically Incorrect board (/pol/) and the Twitter clone, Gab. Using scientifically grounded methods, we quantify the escalation and spread of antisemitic memes and rhetoric across the Web. We find the frequency of antisemitic content greatly increases (in some cases more than doubling) after major political events such as the 2016 US Presidential Election and the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville. Furthermore, this antisemitism appears in tandem with sharp increases in white ethnic nationalist content on the same communities. We extract semantic embeddings from our corpus of posts and demonstrate how automated techniques can discover and categorize the use of antisemitic terminology. We additionally examine the prevalence and spread of the antisemitic "Happy Merchant" meme, and in particular how these fringe communities influence its propagation to more mainstream services like Twitter and Reddit. Taken together, our results provide a data-driven, quantitative framework for understanding online antisemitism. Our open and scientifically grounded methods serve as a framework to augment current qualitative efforts by anti-hate groups, providing new insights into the growth and spread of antisemitism online.

There's plenty of nonsense like this all around. It depends on people's ignorance of both correlation/causation differences and cherry picked data ("corners" of the internet).

And yet it gets almost immediately shunted to the front page, like most of ORB's threads. Curious that...

I really don't know a lot about how true it is that antisemitism is on the rise or even getting more of a voice, but they are getting more attention.

Liberals are seeing to that.

Personally, I doubt most conservatives are interesting in hearing what anti-semites are saying.

If there is a new wave, it's being promoted by liberals, not conservatives.

Dirk,

Conservatives have been supporting Israel for the most part.

I don't really buy the whole antisemitism thing.

Personally I think it's just a liberal wet dream.

Under any political umbrella there's always strange fringe groups out there getting attention.

Both republicans and democrats have that problem.

Antisemitism is a BS term. Most people from North Africa to Burma are Semite. What we are discussing is Jew Hatred, and only a small minority of Jews are actual Semites. So who has Jewish blood on their hands? Plenty of killers over the ages. The Egyptian Empire, The Hittite Empire, the Syrian Empire, the Babylonian Empire, The Greek Seleucid Empire, the Roman Empire, The Islamic Caliphate, the Holy Roman Empire, the Russian Empire, the National Socialist in Germany and the strange thing is, the Jews are still here and all those empires are dead. I have known some Jews, most I liked, some I didn't. But the ideal that they are a great cabal controlling everything is crazy. It speaks more to some nuts looking for someone to blame for their own inadequacies. Most of the antisemitic rhetoric I see now come from two sources, the white power nuts and the hard left losers.

The reality on the ground is Netanyahu is to the Palestinians as Hitler was to the Jews. Israel has a special responsibility to transcend the behavior of Hitler in this time of Trump and his vile son-in-law. Israel is armed to the teeth with the latest and greatest weapons known to mankind. They slaughtered 4 Arab States and the USS Liberty in their surprise attack six day war. The notion that the Palestinians are a threat to Israel's security is a fairy tale, unfortunately supported by US Neocon Persistently failing war criminals. The only people that deserve sympathy and support are the Palestinians and everyone else in the world except Israel and the USA knows it. The only crisis on the planet that is worse is in Yemen, another Trump and Saudi debacle.

#33 | Posted by bayviking As far as I know the Israelis don't operate extermination camps. Hitler did. Israel has been attacked by her neighbors in '48, '69 and 72. Their objective was to wipe the state off the map, and kill every Jew they could. Plus an ongoing proxy war that has been going on for half a century via the so called Palestinians. There are 25 or so Muslim nations. I don't see one opening their doors to these "refugees". As far as I understand, the Palestinians on the West Bank were citizens of Jordan. The inhabitants of the Gaza Strip were citizens of Egypt. There was no one calling for a Palestinian state until they got their butt whipped in '68. I believe Islamic supremacy and Jew hatred that is a fundamental doctrine of Islam has more to do with this conflict than you are willing to admit. Remember there are about 5 million Muslim citizens of Israel. They have more rights than any Muslim state.

#34 | Posted by docnjo at 2018-09-11 11:15 AM | Reply

Israel has consistently crushed her neighbors and every year takes more and more Palestinians land. They even possess nuclear weapons. You make a point on the concentration camps. Israel distinguishes themselves from Hitler by not creating forced starvation labor camps. But they do shoot everyone in Palestine with impunity while the terrible Palestinians throw sticks and stones in return, a capital offense, which can subject Palestinian youth to vital organ removal and sale on the open market while throwing the dead body at the child's parent's doorstep. So, yes, there are differences, but Israel still rules by force and uses that force to impose a total trade embargo while destroying Palestinian farms, hospitals schools, power plants, water and sewage treatment plants, concrete plants....and all the possible jobs which go along with those facilities.

#35 | Posted by bayviking at 2018-09-11 11:42 AM | Reply

#35 | Posted by bayviking, I have no sympathy for the so called Palestinians. They have accomplished nothing in 50 years. Despite billions in aide from many nations. Wars like elections have consequences, they lost. They continue to loose. Palestine does not exist. It is a myth. As far as the destruction of their facilities, don't fight a war you can not win. Launch rockets, expect a 500 lb bomb to be delivered via the Israeli air force. The Palestinians don't want a sovereign state, they just want to kill Jews, every Jew.

So its fair to say docnjo considers Palestinians to be something less than human, like plantation owners characterized their black slaves and Hitler thought of the Jews and blacks.

It would have been more fair to give the Jews a piece of Germany than 1000 year old Palestinian farms, whose water Israel now controls. All we can do is move on from where we are. Arab attacks on Jews are like Arab attacks on the USA, they kill 3000 after we have killed 100,000, so then to get even we kill one million more and displace 5 million onto the EU. It's outrageous. Israel did not invent warfare and violence, but after their horrific WWII experience and the gift of the nation of Israel which followed, it has a special responsibility to transcend human history and demonstrate that it is not necessary to destroy other innocent people in order to make a good life for yourself.

#39 | Posted by bayviking at 2018-09-11 05:22 PM | Reply

39 | Posted by bayviking, That is a damn lie and you know it. The Palestinians are shackled by their beliefs and blinded by their hate. Nothing will change, that would be harram. They are the only ones who can change their situation and that will never happen. They are required to hate Jews, no matter what. It is their duty to kill the Jew, as taught in the Koran by some fifth century warlord.

Docnjo cannot understand the simple fact that it is the Israeli military which has occupied Palestine and routinely murder Palestinians while Jewish settlers encroach year after year, one mile at a time. Docnjo's beliefs are akin to the widely held views in this country that native Indians and blacks are inferior races when they are really victims of atrocious military campaigns.
