Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The US is one of the richest countries in the world, but death rates for middle-aged, white, working-class Americans are rising. That's especially true when it comes to causes like suicide, drugs, and alcohol. The phenomenon has given rise to a troubling new term in public health: deaths of despair. For their research, Goldman's team used publicly available voting data from all 3,112 US counties. They compared voting patterns in 2008 and 2016 with changes in death rates from 2000 to 2015. The results showed that counties where more votes went Republican in 2016 than 2008 had a 15% higher age-adjusted death rate than counties that gained Democratic votes.

What's more, counties where Trump picked up more votes in 2016 than McCain did in 2008 had increases in death rates from suicide, alcohol, and drugs that were 2.5 times higher than in counties where Clinton picked up more votes than Obama did.

WINNING!!!

I feel guilty for celebrating those numbers. But I just can't stop smiling. America will be better off when there are fewer Trump supporters still alive, horrible but true. The "Know nothings" have done enough harm, it's time to take our country back and perhaps punish the traitors like Trump. I'd love to see him live out the rest of his life in prison with cellmate George Bush. Sorry, these are evil people and it is only right be hate them.

Here is an NPR article that doesn't require turning off your ad-blocker.

Thing is it is not political but socio-economic. The reason these people voted for Trump is he said the right things to them. He provided the first hope any politician has provided them with in years. They have been in declining status since the 70's and for the most part they don't know why. So along comes Trump and says this is why and I'll fix it.

Hillary called them deplorables, Obama said they got bitter and cling to their guns and religion. Trump said what they wanted to hear.

I know it's not fashionable but I work with the folks. They are bitter. They are in the jobs their fathers did and dad had a house yet they can't afford the lot fees on their trailer. They go to church every Sunday because the government has let them down and they don't have anywhere else to turn plus dad did it too. Sure they have guns but most of them are not the gun nuts you think of they have one or two not multiple and they are locked away until hunting season. Mostly they are good people and hard workers and are fed up with a government who just doesn't care about them. Alcohol is a way of life, opiates happen when you get injured on the job and pop pills to keep pushing through, suicide is when all hope is gone, your life would make a country singer declare it was too depressing for a song.

Glad you and Rein can glory in the tragedy of working class America Danni. Better hope automation comes quickly cause someone has to dig the ditches and we are all dying off.

Don't do drugs, kids. Alcohol and pot count.

Alcohol sure it's a poison, but weed doesn't have those nasty long term effects on the liver and heart. In fact all the guys I know who have crossed that 54 benchmark use/used weed. When you work retail/customer service or manual labor jobs for crap money having something to leave work behind is almost a requirement. Most will turn to alcohol because it is the socially acceptable method and also more readily available. The ones that find weed instead usually last longer. Not always of course but as a general rule.

In fact legalizing marijuana would probably do a lot to reverse this trend. Get people off alcohol to cut those deaths, get them off opiates to cut those deaths. Now it might increase suicides but I suspect that the overall result would be a reduction in deaths in the 45-54 age range. Granted that is personal observation and anecdotal evidence not science backed.

It's fine to legalize pot, we need some stupid workers. Just like coffee is good to get engineers to drug themselves into higher levels of concentration.

The fact that they had hope in a game show host who couldn't even profit on a casino reflects very poorly on their intelligence. Trump played their racism and xenophobia like a fiddle.

Tao, the first hope these people had did not come from Donald Trump. Obama led a recovery for 8 years yet you give him absolutely no credit, George Bush, with his tax cuts for the rich destroyed the economy and then along comes Trump to take credit for the hard work Obama did. The Republicans have busted unions all over the country, then you credit Republican Trump for bringing back good paying jobs that aren't actually materializing. B.S. You're smarter than that. They gave the 1% a huge tax cut that will cost 1.5 trillion dollars and will end up in another ditch just like Bush's economy did and the working class will again pay for it through loss of jobs, homes, savings and this time they plan to have the nation so broke that there won't be any way to rescue Americans with unemployment benefits, SS, Medicare, Medicaid. Donald Trump is just a con man, I don't know why so many Americans are so easily fooled, it was so obvious to most of us that he was just lying, I am truly surprised that you believed anything he said.

I am guessing it has to do with more republican voters live in the south where the diet tastes awesome but is bad for you. I think I would rather live to be 75 and eat great all my life or 85 and eat bland food all my life. New England boiled dinner has to be one of the most flavorless dishes I have ever eaten.

I think you're overlooking the fact that racists will never give a black man credit for anything. They'd rather vote for a game show host who accused Obama of being. Kenyan.

Mostly they are good people and hard workers and are fed up with a government who just doesn't care about them.

So they turn to an even more callous corporate world for their salvation? That makes zero sense.

But it isn't surprising given their political proclivities lead them to "news" outlets like Fox and Breitbart, which feeds them lie after lie after lie so they don't question the real problem in their decline, corporations, and blame the entity that could actually help them, government, for their woes and deride anything that does help them as "socialism" (which doesn't stop them from using it, of course!).

So no, I don't have too much sympathy for them because they're voting for and cheering on their own demise even though that trend has been quite clear for about twenty years now.

We all are news and political junkies so we see the world differently from the majority I work with.

You think they watch fox all the time, they don't. They are way to busy working 70 hours a week to pay attention to politics and the news. Mostly they get their news from the local news station and co-workers. So one co-worker who is a fox news junkie will pollute 10 other peoples minds. Then if you tell them their views are skewed because of fox news they will laugh knowing full well they never watched it.

For the most part all they heard was Trump was running he wanted to fix immigration and bad trade deals. They knew the name, they liked the concept, so they voted for him. They didn't hear ----- grabbing 3 bankruptcies, ripping off contractors or any of that.

Mind you I'm not defending that. Voting with half the information is a bad idea, (clearly it got us trump) but that is the reality.

As far as the racism yeah it's there but it's not nearly as bad as most of you think. We all work with Hispanics and blacks day in and day out. We know they are hard workers and good people, we count them among our friends.

However people also see that 9 out of 10 masons are Hispanic. They see 99 out of 100 framers are Hispanic, and 999 out of 1000 clean up crews are Hispanic and they start to wonder if they have a place any more. The Hispanics become an easy target of a fear of the future. So yes it is racism but it is not some deeply held belief it is more of a vague fear.

As far as Obama goes I give him plenty of credit had he been allowed to run for a 3rd term I would have voted for him. Instead we got Hillary who had been so damaged by 20 years of bad press she had an uphill battle that she fought poorly against a whole new type of candidate. Yes the fox news crowd couldn't give him any credit but once again that only infected a few of white working class with a small spill over to those who got fox second hand.

That's a good point. Being in academia I'm surrounded by well informed people all day too.

I'd say I should get out more but I think I would step in front of a bus out of frustration.

For many of the folks that live in fly-over country, the Obama recovery never happened. All they see is their small towns dwindling, their blue collar jobs disappearing and their children moving away. For these folks, the Obama recovery was not a positive development. It was the loss of a way of life.

And the same continues to happen.

It has nothing to do with Obama or the recovery so voting Repub as if it will help anything is only hastening their demise.
