Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

In 1967, the USS Forrestal suffered near catastrophic damage from a fire that raged on-board for nearly two days. John McCain was stationed on the Forrestal at the time and was quite likely responsible for the fire that killed 134 sailors and injured 62 others. Hot dog pilots were well known for their "wet-starts," a process which allows fuel to build up in the engine before hitting the plane's start switch. The result of the wet-start is a long flame erupting from the tail of the plane. It was done simply for effect, a showy procedure meant to draw attention to the pilot. On June 29, 1967, John McCain is alleged to have used a wet-start to "shake up" a pilot in the plane behind him. The result was a fired rocket, dropped bombs and a fire that raged for nearly two days. 134 sailors lost their lives and another 62 were badly injured. McCain never had to answer for the incident. His father and grandfather were Navy admirals with a great deal of sway.

Military screwups are a Republican thing, until they went with cowardly traitors.

The guy kinda screwed up. #2 | Posted by dxlingr

He kinda crashed 5 US govt. jet planes. That earned him the title of "black ace". Also, the other POW's in the Hanoi Hilton nicknamed him "songbird". And he got preferential treatment.

Walk away from that, McCain defenders. And if anybody cares, here is his testimony from Hanoi: youtu.be

The story is --------. I've seen the footage. His aircraft was struck by a rocket fired by an F-4. The 2 aircraft were nowhere near one another. McCain's was up near the bow cats. The F-4 was inboard of the island. I recall the rocket fired due to stray voltage.

Snopes says that McCain didn't start the USS Forrestal fire:

#8 I just can't understand how the USAF would allow someone who attracts rockets to fly one of their planes?!

Say, can you dig up the footage for me? I always thought it was his fault as usual like the other four times.

Deplorable my ass.

You have to assess your sensibilities if you think MC
ain is a hero.

To what?

Lots of guys were POW's but nobody called them heros. Bombing innocents isn't heroic.

#12 Damn, dude. I can't believe McCain did all that that. What a bastard....

#14 | Posted by HeliumRat at 2018-09-02 01:09 AM | Reply

If McCain was a hero, it sure as hell wasn't for anything he did in politics.

#15 | Posted by snoofy at 2018-09-02 01:13 AM | Reply

So it was an A-4 skyhawk piloted by Darth Vader that launched the Zuni. Huh. McCain must be the most dangerous person on Earth to stand around. Trust me folks, I'm a fish anti-magnet. Stuff like that is real.

I don't give a ---- if someone considers him a hero or not. Honestly there are no heros in my life that I don't personally know. That being said I don't make it a thing to piss on someone's grave, especially for political reasons. It's a deplorable act.

Please continue on.

#17 I guess you could call him a hero because he survived wrecking a whole lot of really expensive stuff. That's not easy to do. Your mileage may vary.

This discussion reminds me of the men at the Alamo. Some were vicious, slave owning bastards (Bowie). Some were murderers and escaping criminals (Travis).

But all we're heroes for standing behind weak walls for thirteen days resisting a dictator.

John McCain resisted a dictator.

Having worked on 3 carrier flight decks, (America, Nimitz, and Vincent) I watched the films several times for training. It was as Mustang described. This is another BS excuse as stated by JPW.

Go to hell Comrade.

Every American POW is a hero. And everyone I know calls them heroes. No matter how they are captured. And John McCain never got much of a chance to Bomb "innocents" as you seem to claim.

Americans are generally not assigned to target innocents. Anyway he was too busy crashing planes and getting captured.

Yeah, like all the guys who got spit on, were called traitors, were generally despised. Coming back to that.... Disgusting.

Ever hear about the other guys who were imprisoned with John? Probably not.

Educate yourself.

This is an old story and the subject of investigations.

It's not proven or even widely accepted that he was the cause of the fire.

Bringing it up now is just an attempt to smear his name and not based on any new evidence.

Exactly. This story started circulating again right after he voted against repealing the ACA.

Welcome to the party of spite and malice.
