I'm curious how somebody would have been able to get a handgun (I'm guessing based on the sound in the video) inside to begin with.

Would have expected tight security for this kind of event.

Fair enough, and yet somehow people rabidly addicted to guns are AOK with a good chunk of the population. Of course with guns you can actually kill people.

He didn't say murders, he said KILLINGS which include suicides by firearms.

Firearm suicides - Number of deaths: 22,018
15,500 + 22,018 = 37,518/365 = 102.789 deaths per day.

Violent Video Games and Real-World Violence: Rhetoric Versus Data.

If video games are really the equivalent of flight simulators training people to kill (Bushman, 2008; Gentile & Anderson, 2003; Grossman, 1998), it is difficult to explain why homicide rates would go down after millions of these "murder simulators" have been sold. When the media, politicians, or researchers link the murderous rampages of male adolescents with violent video games, they are conveying a classic illusory correlation (Ferguson, 2013). These individuals are ignoring that 90% of young males play video games (Lenhart, 2008). Finding that a young man who committed a violent crime also played a popular video game, such as Call of Duty , Halo , or Grand Theft Auto , is as pointless as pointing out that the criminal also wore socks.

www.researchgate.net

Unrelated to the above study, it's hypothesized that (much like marijuana users), video game players are significantly less likely to commit crime, let alone violent crime, as they are so often incapacitated at home. Can't commit crime when you're at home playing video games (or stoned off your ---).

As promised:

[T]he idea that NFL players have a higher propensity to commit crime than the rest of the population has been debunked with research. A 2015 University of Texas, Dallas study found that NFL players actually have a lower arrest rate than population at large. According to a press release published by the university about the study's findings:

For every year between 2000 and 2013, the total arrest rate for the general population was significantly higher than the total arrest rate for NFL players. For example, the total arrest rate for the general population was 4,889 arrests per 100,000 people in 2013; the total arrest rate for NFL players was 3,740. For most years, the total arrest rate for the general population was one and a half to two times as high as the total rate for NFL players.

"The data show that the perception that NFL players are overly criminal compared to the U.S. population is false," [researcher and criminology professor Alex] Piquero said. "In fact, when you look at the forest and not the trees, the trends over the 14-year period show that the general population has higher arrest rates than NFL players do."

Valid point (and learned that college football players make up a significant portion of the crime committed by college students) thesocietypages.org yet does not undermine my overall argument as it relates to the current thread and MODER8's original #2 post. To add, the chances that a Madden football video game player is also a football player in real life is low, considering the total number of video game players juxtaposed with the total number of football players. So you're suggestion that football video game players (as that's the correct context of this discussion, not actual football players) are more violent than non-football video game players is lacking in substance.

Madden football is a video game. Video game players are hypothetically less likely to commit crimes than non-video game players based upon the incapacitation effect, similar to that seen in marijuana users.

I agree that there is little correlation between video games and violence. The --- talking that goes on with the online social aspect may be a different story. Not saying this has anything to do with what happened here, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

#66 | Posted by horstngraben at 2018-08-26 08:41 PM | Reply

Japan has violent video games. Yet they have fewer gun deaths per 100 citizens.

The UK deals with individuals with psychological disorders. Yet they have fewer gun deaths per 100 citizens.

Australia has abusive families. Yet they have fewer gun deaths per 100 citizens.

The US fails on this front. Perhaps the US does better on other fronts, but on the subject of gun deaths per 100 citizens versus other first world countries, the US fails.

That this event happened isn't the worst part. The worst part is knowing that it will happen again, and again, and again. This event will be politicized and co-opted and hijacked. And none of that will matter to the next set of victims.

There will be one substantive difference between this tragedy and the next; the names of the dead.

You are right. Lets let people carry guns around freely in crowds while they drink and compete for large prize money.

I'm sure NOTHING could go wrong.

Idiot.

CHL permit holders are well known for getting drunk and committed armed robberies. I saw three just yesterday. Unfortunately I chose to be unarmed and couldn't shoot back.

Unlucky, they could have seen what precision marksmanship looks like.

Gee, let's put a bunch of Call Of Duty, Halo, God of War, Gears of War and Assassins Creed players all in one location. What could go wrong? No mentally questionable individuals in that group.

Republican and NRA conventions are always held in gun-free zones.

I have been noticing that casinos (at least in Reno) are becoming gun-free zones.

Don't know about the GOP conventions (assuming they are) but the NRA most certainly are not.

This argument was had several months ago and it's quite clear if you actually look into it that the NRA chooses cities with large venues in states with more liberal carry laws.

They do make the point of saying that carry is subjected to local ordinances/restrictions, ie one year attendees could carry in the main event venue but not in the smaller, city owned venue that the concerts were held in next door.
