The government of Puerto Rico has quietly acknowledged in a report posted online that in all likelihood more than 1,400 people died in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria -- a figure that is more than 20 times the official death toll.

An excerpt from the government report:Although the official death count from the Puerto Rico Department of Public Safety was initially 64, the toll appears to be much higher. On June 13, the Government of Puerto Rico revealed that there were 1,427 more deaths in the four months after the hurricanes than normal (based on the previous four years), and it will update the official count after a George Washington University study is completed. Similarly, independent researchers analyzing vital statistics data found that about 1,000 more people died in September and October 2017 than normal, largely in the hurricane's path or in mountainous rural areas. A much-publicized Harvard study estimated hurricane deaths likely ranged from about 800 to 8,500 due to indirect causes, such as delayed or interrupted health care.

"Was this 'study' done by a 9 year old by any chance?"

Even better.

It was done by a nine year old that Trump would consider dating when she turns 18.

It's reflexive. You have two kinds of people in the world. There are those who slow down to let cat pass, and there are those who make sure the poor bastard gets run over.

They speak Spanish and they are brown so America doesn't care. If they looked like Ivanka we would have rescued them, fed them, rehoused them. Brown people are expendable under Trump. Trump, the worst President in history, Trump supporters, the dumbest human beings in history.

Oh Danni-bot...I don't know what is more absurd, the fact that you think a storm the size of Florida barrels through a tiny island and nobody will die or that the same island which took hundreds of years to build into what it was wasn't rebuilt in a month's time. It's not your fault though. Whoever programmed you forgot to add the I in AI.

Ask Donald Trump how many people died in Puerto Rico. Oh, and make sure to ask him if his response to the place was brilliant.

You have to be a callous, brain-dead zombie to a Trumper.

Trumpers live in a world where everyone gets exactly what they deserve, except for themselves.

#17 | Posted by Zed at 2018-08-10 12:54 PM | Reply

#16 And you need to be, wait you are a moron to blame this on Trump or anyone but natural causes and the fact that PR's electrical grid was a total mess before the storm. It didn't simply need to have wires re-hung and transformers replaced, it needed all new poles, substations and tropical weather related equipment that needed to be specially made. Did not help that the PR workers refused to step up and even stole supplies before they ended up where they were supposed to go.

Donald Trump is incompetent and uncaring. Never a good combo for disaster relief. Not a good combo for anything having to do with good governance. When you add greed, lack of patriotism, and mental illness to the mix you get a series of disasters which continue to this day.

Do tell us why they got helicopters immediately in Texas, but it took weeks in PR to get the same number even though there was no physical impediment and they were available.
Do tell us why Florida and Texas got aid packages and PR got a loan...but then didn't actually get it.

Seriously, do tell us.

#22 | Posted by Sycophant at 2018-08-10 01:38 PM | Reply

I'll give you a hint idiot, what is a piece of land surrounded by water called? No physical impediment? That's just another of your bold faced lies that we have come to expect. The island was in ruin, supplies that were brought in were being stolen because the local government had no control, Texas and Fla were prepared and the first responders were locals who prepare the areas for the feds. No such thing in PR. Idiots like yourself think the feds can just wave a magic wand over an area and make it all better, you're clueless and have no idea about logistics so STFU and go back to watching sponge bob.

a lot of brown people in those states, too.

and look how we handled NOLA.

we'll never know but I'm going to assume it's mostly incompetence but just to make some of you happy, I'll add a sprinkling of racism to make you all feel better.

#29 | Posted by getoffmedz at 2018-08-10 03:52 PM | Reply

#22 | Posted by Sycophant Because Ft. Hood is a lot closer to Houston than any large supply of helicopters are to Puerto Rico. There are three Squadrons of them there and they have the support personnel. That is over 180 birds, about 120 would be useful in relief and rescue operations. Remember when a chopper takes off it has about 90 minutes of fuel one way, less if it is loaded. It also take about two hours of maintenance for every hour it is in the air. The Navy has some, and so do the Costies, bur not in that quantity.
