Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, August 08, 2018

Millennials interested in the world of ideas are on a quest for the types of open conversations often lacking in their college classes or in the media. One possible solution is a new rogue movement still sorting out its manners and mores. It's called the Intellectual Dark Web, and it may prove to be the best thing that's happened to civil discourse since the Internet began.

Coined by economist Eric Weinstein, the name describes a group of American thinkers spanning the political spectrum who are pushing back against the divisive rhetoric and constricted ideological parameters of the cultural mainstream. Intellectual Dark Web members include University of Toronto psychology professor Jordan B. Peterson, religion critic Sam Harris, conservative commentator Ben Shapiro, and Rubin Report host Dave Rubin.

This is both dispiriting and encouraging.

It's a shame that an intellectually-diverse group of people cannot discuss a wide range of topics without being pilloried by the Twitter mob.

It's encouraging that people spanning the prism of intellectual thought are seeking out forums where they can discuss a wide-range of issues openly.

It's funny that you hear about Twitter mobs and think "PC run wild" when such mobs are often the exact opposite: alt righters, misogynists, anti-PC crusaders... your kind of people, basically.

Dirk,

That Vox piece is pretty bad.

First off, it attempts to tie the likes of Shapiro, Weinstein, Rubin, et al with the alt-right.

That is some horrible guilt-by-association right there. Unfortunately, that was the premise the article lead with and as a result pretty much invalidated the rest of the piece.

Twitter mobs run the full gamut. They consist of the groups you cited along with a whole slew of SJW mobs on the left.

It is precisely why people across the intellectual spectrum are seeking more private venues to openly discuss a whole slew of issues.

It points to specific issues with these individuals and gives specific examples of the sort of "free discourse" happening on the IDW: repackaging of old racist genetic theories and backlash against feminism and multiculturalism. Your intellectual haven in action. Disgusting.

He's as alt-right as it gets.

If you read his interview with Slate, Shapiro built the alt-right Breitbart ship, then abandoned that ship when they wouldn't stand up for their "reporter" who got manhandled by Corey Lewandowski. Cedeing his alt-right bully pulpit to Milo Yiannapoulis.

"Andrew Breitbart despised racism. Truly despised it," former Breitbart editor-at-large Ben Shapiro wrote last week on the Daily Wire, a conservative website. "With Bannon embracing Trump, all that changed. Now Breitbart has become the alt-right go-to website, with [technology editor Milo] Yiannopoulos pushing white ethno-nationalism as a legitimate response to political correctness, and the comment section turning into a cesspool for white supremacist mememakers."

Shapiro spent years helping Bannon build his alt-right kingdom only to realize he couldn't bottle the lightning like he hoped.

Notice that Jeffylube, confronted by the fact that his "intellectual haven" is just another cesspool for the scum of the internet, quibbles over how and in what way given terrible people are terrible. He can't just concede and SAY they are terrible... because he really doesn't think that they are. One might say that he even thinks they are VERY FINE PEOPLE.

#22 | Posted by DirkStruan at 2018-08-08 07:18 PM | Reply

Maybe it would be better to say Shapiro helped Bannon build his alt-right stronghold only to get exiled for being a Jew after he had outlived his usefulness.

His crocodile tears aren't nearly as convincing as all the times he cashed those alt-right paychecks.

But I'm glad he's supposedly better now.

People have lost their jobs over fairly innocuous statements that didn't toe the progressive line.

Here is one example:

Yale Lecturer Resigns After Email on Halloween Costumes

www.nytimes.com

Make no mistake, this was a forced resignation over an email where she suggested that people need to chill out over what costumes others choose to wear for Halloween. This is far from an isolated incident and it didn't happen in Kook-ville. That this could happen at an institution like Yale is astounding.

Yet another example of an "intellectual American thinker" being pushed underground:

Internet Rips Ben Shapiro for $10K Offer to Debate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: He'll 'Pay a Woman Just to Talk to Him'

Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro offered New York Democratic primary congressional winner Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez $10,000 to publicly debate him.

The offer backfired as the public reaction was one of mockery to Shapiro's desperation.

Shapiro said he wants to "really probe" her belief system during the proposed hour-long conversation.

Twitter reacted with amusement to the entitled offer from Shapiro.

"Little man offers to pay pretty girl to talk to him..."

"Intellectual superstar Ben Shapiro tries to pay women to talk to him."
