Asbestos is now legally allowed back into U.S. manufacturing under a serious of loopholes by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). On June 1, the EPA authorized a "SNUR" (Significant New Use Rule) that allowed the creation of new products containing asbestos on a case-by-case basis.

"Asbestos was widely used in building insulation up until it was completely banned in most countries in the 1970s. The U.S. severely restricted its use without completely outlawing it. The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization revealed in April that asbestos-related deaths now total nearly 40,000 annually, with lung cancer and mesothelioma being the most common illnesses in association with the toxin."

One of the world's biggest producers of asbestos, a Russian company with ties to Vladimir Putin, is praising President Trump for allowing asbestos to remain legal in the U.S.

The company's applause for Trump comes as Russia is poised to become the leading importer to the U.S. of asbestos, which causes diseases that kill an estimated 15,000 Americans a year. A recent study led by Jukka Takala, president of the International Commission on Occupational Health, found the death toll from asbestos exposure may be much higher, at nearly 40,000 Americans a year and more than 255,000 a year worldwide.

On June 25, the asbestos producer Uralasbest (the Russian asbestos maker) posted photos on its Facebook page of pallets of its signature product, chrysotile asbestos, wrapped in plastic adorned with Trump's image. Trump's picture is at the center of a large red seal declaring: "APPROVED BY DONALD TRUMP, 45th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES."

Amerikanski President is more loyal to Russia than even Putin.

If I owned a business that would normal have used this stuff, I would chose not to use it. Maybe cheaper and better, but would not want to endure the law suits that would come as a result of it having been banned for so long. One of those "The company knew the problems and still put the public at risk."

‘Approved by Donald Trump': Asbestos sold by Russian company is branded with the president's face.

Little known fact. Ground asbestos mixed with coal dust is a great air freshener.

#13 | Posted by danni at 2018-08-08 12:07 PM | Reply

'The EPA's recently released report states that the agency will "no longer consider the effect or presence of substances in the air, ground, or water in its risk assessments."'

What's left? The effects in fire?

I'm sure all those nasty asbestos rules and laws have hurt Trump's real estate business. Costly asbestos removal and all. Now that he's President, he can fix all that.

#14 they might as well change the name to the EIA- Engironmental Ignoring Agency.

Worst part is most asbestos use is in places where it is invisible to the end user making it very hard for a consumer to avoid it.

That Russian company better watch it if they don't give Donald a cut for using his image.

Why de-Trump the headline? This sort of action is the hallmark of his presidency.

I get that the EPA is corrupt under Trump and this is a handout to Russia.

But are the companies putting asbestos in products shielded from civil liability or something?

#19 | Posted by snoofy at 2018-08-08 09:19 PM | Reply

The EPA told The Washington Post it will conduct further studies on the first 10 chemicals under the amended TSCA and final risk evaluations will published in December 2019.

Convenient timing.

Back in 2017 Australia blocked imports of Polaris ATVs because they found asbestos in the gaskets of their Chinese made engines. I guess when the healthcare system is publicly funded you worry about stuff like lung cancer.
