Kylie Jenner, the youngest member of what Forbes calls the "Kardashian-Jenner industrial complex," is on track to pass Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg as the youngest self-made billionaire thanks to her 2-year-old Kylie Cosmetics enterprise. Jenner, who turns 21 in August, appears on the cover of the financial magazine's "America's Women Billionaires" issue. The magazine estimates her worth at $900 million, on par with Jay-Z, the wealthiest man in hip-hop at age 48. (By comparison, they point out, Jenner's half-sister Kim Kardashian West is worth approximately $350 million.)

The bulk of her income is derived from Kylie Cosmetics, best known for its lip kits. Forbes puts the company's value at $800 million. And with no office (she works out of her mother's home) and only seven full-time employees and five part-timers, it has very little overhead. Jenner is the sole owner, reaping all the profits. Manufacturing and packaging, sales, finance and public relations are all outsourced. "Momager" Kris handles her business affairs, taking a 10 percent cut.

The story also reports Jenner, who became a mom in February, has also earned several million from her share of E!'s "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" and endorsement deals with Puma and PacSun.

As self-made as Trump.

Regardless, this is truly impressive.

In our quasi-capitalistic-feudal society, this make her royalty.

Trump used his fame to destroy the world. This girl is making lipstick kits that help people have fun and feel good about themselves. I applaud her.

There are worse ways to make a billion. Like selling condos to the Russian mob.

Oxford English Dictionary doesn't think she's "self made" even if Forbes does.

Let me see the financials. I seriously wonder what Forbes was looking at.

This is normally the kind of thread where a new person shows up with an oddly specific-to-the-thread username like KylieFan1 to defend her.

"I seriously wonder what Forbes was looking at."

They were looking at their readership demographics and asked, what can we put on the cover that will generate the most harmless chatter across the internet?

I say she is self made. While her popularity helps, she did think up the idea and outsourced all the work. I dont hate on her just because she had this good idea and acted on it.

outsourcing your work doesn't mean you aren't a self-starter.

I dont agree, no it doesnt. It's no different than someone thinking up an idea and having the manufacturing outsourced.

Bill Gates and others are self made, but when it came time to make the computers or software, they didn't hand them all out themselves. Same principal here.

LOL...Laura, you just proved you were wrong.

You can outsource and still be self-made.

Are you attaching some sort of moral or ethical strike against someone who outsources some or all of their business units?

#20 | Posted by eberly at 2018-07-12 04:10 PM | Reply

I don't consider Kylie Jenner self-made either...but not because she outsources.

It's because she is working off fame and $$$$ that were given to her.

I dont agree with this. Plenty of people have started businesses with money left over from dead relatives. It's supposed to be the American way. Leave money for family so they can prosper like you. She came up with the idea. She makes the money.

#23 | Posted by boaz at 2018-07-12 04:15 PM | Reply

I don't mean to be critical of her. I don't follow those people and I know nothing of this company or her products or anything.

I work with many multi-generational businesses....successful businesses.

I distinguish between those that started a business from nothing and the kid who inherits a company with a strong financial backing. I'm not bagging on second or third generations but I reserve the term "self-made" for those that started with either nothing or next to nothing.

Laura world is tough. You're not self-made if you have employees or contractors.

Kylie leveraged her familial fame to add value to cosmetics. Good for her, many try and few succeed.

To me self-made means you weren't given access to existing assets to build your success. Kylie is very successful, but not self-made if you want to be picky.

Kylie 2020.

Considering she started with a famous dad, a last name and connections, I would hardly call her self made.
