President Donald Trump followed up on a week of bashing NATO allies on Twitter with an in-person tirade against Germany's planned energy cooperation with Russia. In a heated meeting in Brussels with the leaders of NATO, Trump claimed that Moscow now basically controls Berlin because of their dependence on it for energy.

"It's very sad when Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russia where we're supposed to be guarding against Russia, and Germany goes out and pays billions and billions of dollars a year from Russia," Trump told NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at a working breakfast to open the summit.

"Germany is totally controlled by Russia," said Trump. "Because they're getting between 60 to 70% of their energy from Russia and a new pipeline.

Trump is Putin's mouthpiece, he'll say or do anything his owner tells him to because Putin has information and holds debts that Trump can't deal with. Trump is Putin's bitch and we all know it.

"It's very sad when Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russia"

Yes, it's very sad.

Are you going to do anything about it other than cry in your bier?

"where we're supposed to be guarding against Russia"

Engaging Russia economically makes it more painful for Russia to disrupt the economy through military aggression.

"and Germany goes out and pays billions and billions of dollars a year from Russia"

Then maybe you should make them a better offer? Oh right, you don't have a nationalized energy infrastructure to bargain with like Russia does. Maybe you should see about getting one of those, President Donald J. Trump!

We have a trade deficit with China but we are supposed to care if Germany has a pipeline with Russia?

Who could blame the EU if they create separate financial markets and all of it without the usa?

At this point, it's almost prudent.

Didn't Russia shut off the gas supply to Ukraine in the middle of a bitter winter, not delivering gas that Ukraine had already paid for?

I've always thought that if any country depends upon Russia for winter-heating gas supplies, that can be an negotiating point when it is to Russia's benefit to cut off the gas.

Biden: Nord Stream 2 pipeline is a 'bad deal' for Europe

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said on Thursday the United States believed the Nord Stream 2 pipeline involving Russia and several European energy companies was a "bad deal" for Europe.

I guess it all depends on whether the President is a repub or dem.

Sarah Sanders says John Kelly was mad about breakfast pastries -- not Trump saying Germany is ‘controlled by Russia'

Chief of Staff John Kelly appeared quite perturbed as his boss ranted, looking as though he was considering getting up and walking out.

But the actual issue was simply the quality of the food, White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders has now told the Washington Post.

"[Kelly] was displeased because he was expecting a full breakfast and there were only pastries and cheese," she said.

"I guess it all depends on whether the President is a repub or dem."

Nyet:

David Frum @davidfrum

President Trump has dangerously misunderstood (or refused to understand) the security concern for the Nordstream gas pipelines directly connecting Germany to Russia via the Baltic Sea.

The issue is not that the pipelines render Germany dependent on Russian gas, as Trump stated. Russia is even more dependent on German money than the other way around. (more)

No, the problem with the pipelines is that they enable Russia to turn off gas to Baltic Republics, Poland, etc. WITHOUT pressuring Germay - thereby severing Alliance solidarity in a crisis

The US was concerned about the pipelines in order to uphold NATO solidarity vs Russian energy pressure. Since Trump has made clear he despises NATO, his remonstrances on pipeline can and will be shrugged off.

What he's performing this AM at NATO breakfast is a repeat of his 2016 "No puppet, you're the puppet" routine, accusing others of what is suspected of him: dependency on Russia, Putin. Does not fool anybody at the NATO table of course, but they're not the intended audience

If any member state of NATO or any member of U.S. Congress or any citizen of member states or any citizen of the United States, were suspicious of Trump's mental condition, it has now been confirmed.

The President of the United States is totally unhinged.

Very true. US not the only country to express concern. Former UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has sounded the alarm with other NATO members. But because Trump.........

#24 | Posted by tunde at 2018-07-12 06:59 AM | Reply

#24 - While Kerry did say that Nord Stream II 'provoked a very heated debate" and that it would have an adverse effect on "Slovakia, Ukraine and eastern Europe" because it could lock in energy dependence, he also said that Russia has to be part of the energy solution for Europe.

Please. Use google. Find the sources reporting on Kerry's words, and see what they all have in common. Pay attention to the careful culling and clipping of Kerry's statement.

Then take a look at who is in NATO, why even bringing this deflection up was made.

Finally, bringing Brexit Boris into this? I think you just made my point even clearer.

Sorry to ever agree with Trump but really the German people are setting themselves up to be dominated by Russia. Trump is actually right about this. I hate saying that, I can't stand Trump but Russia has already demonstrated how much power energy gives them in their dealings with Ukraine. To pretend otherwise is irresponsible and potentially dangerous.

#32 -
Germany is gradually shutting down their nuclear power plants, continuing to build out renewable energy, and supplementing with additional natural gas from Russia during the transition and as needed.

And American Republicans and Trump still think they, without the facts, without the details, know better for the German people than the German people and government itself.

Too bad Japan, France and the U.S. aren't as responsible as the Germans. They are so far ahead of us on solar energy it isn't even funny. Blaming Merkel for the German need for immigration is idiotic, just as it is here in the U.S. Germans like Americans just didn't have enough children to grow the economy without immigration.

The percentage of NG is closer to 45%

The 70% figure includes ALL sources of energy. Not just natural gas.
