Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Mid Continent is one of thousands of companies to ask the Commerce Department for a special waiver that will allow it to avoid paying the higher taxes created by Trump's tariffs. Without the waiver, the 60 employees laid off in June could soon have company. Another 200 will be fired by the end of this month unless things change quickly, company executives tellU.S. News and World Report.

All of which leaves the impression that support for Trump's tariffs is not something generated by a sense of a greater good. It's not about voters agreeing to take a hit now because they understand it is necessary for something beneficial down the road. It seems to be, mostly, about tribalism. About the fact that our guy is "better than the Muslim we had in the White House," even if his policies cost my job.

At least that's how it seems for now. Once more jobs are actually lost, and perhaps once it becomes clear that the tariffs aren't accomplishing whatever goals Trump has, perhaps that will change. The partisan hatred might not go away, but maybe voters will stay home. Until then, parts of so-called Trump country seem to be fine with their man destroying their jobs to own the libs.

"Nearby in the downtown parking lot, in between the train tracks and the farmers market, a man wearing a shirt emblazoned with a red, white and blue peace sign, who only gave his first name, John, said he's "pretty worried" since two of his friends have already been laid off. But more important to him is that "there were so many illegals in the area taking jobs away." And Trump "is better than the Muslim we had in the White House." For him, a real threat to jobs is less frightening than an imagined one."

SOMEONE please tell me the above does NOT embody the average Republican.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeease SOMEBODY!!!!

What are the libs supposed to do when the party with utmost power allowable by the constitution takes the above stance, which seems to be exactly the stance even Republicans in Congress are taking, let alone the POTUS?

This is good for the GOP, the angry unemployed have more time to make it to the polls. Just keep blaming foreigners and the dems for not building the wall. Genius.

If there are so many illegals in the area taking jobs, it should be easy to find where they are working. Seems like the authorities should be going after the employers. That's the problem - no jobs, no reason to come. Regardless, thinking like these folks demonstrate has MO leaving skidmarks in the bowl as we head for Mississoppi status.

Yes Jethro the high school dropout, Mohammed the nuerologist is taking your job.

"Seems like the authorities should be going after the employers."

The employers are Republicans who donate money to the GOP, the authorities, under Trump are never going to go after them. Illegal immigration isn't about immigration, it's about exploiting their illegal status. Build that wall, it will keep the illegals from escaping! We have to get that lettuce picked! We need those roofs fixed!

What political party were they during the 16 years Bill Clinton and Barack Obama occupied the White House?

You understand we had a horrible problem with illegal immigrants during those 16 years as well, don't you?

No....well, whatever.

Back to the article.....it seems we're accepting that a tax increase is costing jobs. A tariff is a tax.

-It seems to be, mostly, about tribalism.

That's a good way to put it. Pretty irrational behavior.

Actually, it is pretty easy, at least in California. You would have about a 90% hit rate on illegals is you:

1.) Picked up everyone standing in front of a Home Depot looking for day labor
2.) Raided every landscaping company
3.) Raided every roofing company
4.) Raided every carwash that employs actual people
5.) Raided every restaurant dishwashing crew

To pretend like we don't know where the illegals are is pretty silly. Also, I really don't mind the illegals working any of these jobs even though they undoubtably lower wages for unskilled US workers. Where my beef comes in is with them having a wife and popping out kids on the side to suck up more and more taxpayer resources. We need a guest worker program that does not allow automatic citizenship for popping out a baby. I know we don't want to pay more for our meal prices, but once you factor in that $14,000/year for schooling a single illegal kid, you quickly realize the menu price does not come close to representing what we are actually paying.

"What political party were they during the 16 years Bill Clinton and Barack Obama occupied the White House? "

They were Republicans then too, voting out Democratic majorities of Congress in both cases.

We are subsidizing Walmart too you know. Low wages enable families to get food stamps, subsidized housing, Medicaid, etc.

Why do Republicans feel they have to lie and misrepresent the available data in order to exaggerate the level to which undocumented immigrants access benefits?

No, Undocumented Immigrants Aren't Stealing Your Benefits

In reality, immigrants typically pay far more in taxes than they receive in benefits. And that includes undocumented immigrants. Makes sense. Not only do they simply not qualify for many benefits, but undocumented immigrants also tend to keep a low profile and may not seek benefits they possibly could legitimately receive as a result. However, every year millions of undocumented immigrants not only do pay taxes, they even file their tax returns.

According to a 2010 report by the American Immigration Council, undocumented immigrants pay as much as $90 billion in taxes but receive just $5 billion in benefits. The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP) estimated that in 2010 undocumented immigrants paid as much as $10.6 billion in state and local taxes alone.

In fact, given IRS estimates that some 50-75 percent of undocumented immigrants pay taxes, we could actually reduce deficits by providing those immigrants a path to legal immigration and enabling them all to pay taxes. That's right. By ensuring so many undocumented immigrants stay in the shadows, we significantly reduce the amount of available taxable income.

Furthermore, the SSA estimated that unauthorized immigrants had injected $100 billion into the social security fund over the previous 10 years. And by 2014, Goss told CNNMoney they were paying $15 million per annum into social security. He added that without this money entering the system, Social Security would not have been bringing in enough money to make payouts in 2009.

Now, arguably, it's neither fair nor just that these immigrants pay into a system they're unlikely to draw from, but it's a fact and it stands in contradistinction to the messaging you see coming from Donald Trump and other quarters.

The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996, or "IIRIRA." Congress legislated that not only would undocumented immigrants not receive welfare, but legal immigrants wouldn't get benefits such as food stamps, Medicaid or money for child assistance until they've lived here at least five years and even seven years after their arrival.
