Some immigrant U.S. Army reservists and recruits who enlisted in the military with a promised path to citizenship are being abruptly discharged, the Associated Press has learned. The AP was unable to quantify how many men and women who enlisted through the special recruitment program have been booted from the Army, but immigration attorneys say they know of more than 40 who have been discharged or whose status has become questionable, jeopardizing their futures ... "It was my dream to serve in the military," said reservist Lucas Calixto, a Brazilian immigrant who filed a lawsuit against the Army last week. "Since this country has been so good to me, I thought it was the least I could do to give back to my adopted country and serve in the United States military."

40? Really? Among the thousands that get citizenship a year, they are focusing on 40?

I cant help they are from terrorist producing countries and their families are questionable. We still need to protect our armed forces from infiltration.

Sucks to be them.

I have personally helped several soldiers get citizenship while they were active duty. The process wasn't that hard and it didn't take that long.

Brazil fits this definition?

With all your worry about foreign enemies, you seem blind to the presence of a domestic enemy: "All had signed enlistment contracts and taken an Army oath." We're breaking our oath. You support breaking our oath to the troops. That being said, I suspect Trump could break his oath to you and you'd find a reason to be okay with it. Like the Harley workers who think he's attacking their jobs for some reason they can't understand, because he's such a good businessman.

Veterans respond to Army discharging immigrant recruits
nypost.com

Military veterans said it's a slap in the face that immigrant recruits have quietly been kicked out of the Army after being promised citizenship...

"They're pretty much breaking promises to these guys," said Mexican-born Army veteran Hector Barajas, who served in the 82nd Airborne Division between 1996-99 and was honorably discharged in 2001.

"They weren't actually in the service and they were receiving their adjudication from that process," spokeswoman Major Carla Gleason told The Post. "For some reason those individuals, after that suitability review, were determined to be not eligible to serve in the Army."

Margaret Stock, a a retired Army Reserve lieutenant colonel who helped create the immigrant recruitment program when she was a professor at the US Military Academy at West Point, questioned the Defense Department's explanation.

"They suddenly started discharging lots of people," said Stock, who now works at as an immigration attorney. "Before there would be one or two here or there. ... Now, there are whole bunch of people all at once with no explanation."

Over time, Stock said the vetting requirements for MAVNI recruits has gotten so extreme they are were impossible to meet. "They think that anybody who is a foreigner in the ranks is a threat," she said.

"It's totally suspicious to me. What DoD is doing is a classic thing the bureaucracy does when they are trying to cover-up wrong doing.

George Rufolo, 91, a World War II Navy vet and member of VFW Post 150 in Corona, Queens, said the recent discharges were flat-out wrong.

"It isn't fair," Rufolo said. "Why did you take them and then throw them out?"

In order to become citizens, the recruits need to serve for 180 days honorably, said Gleason.

US Army reportedly discharging immigrants who enlisted with promises of citizenship

www.aol.com

The U.S. Army has begun discharging some immigrants who enlisted in the military with promises that their service would lead to U.S. citizenship, according to a report Thursday in The Associated Press.

Attorneys representing at least 40 people recruited through a program meant to attract talented enlistees -- those with special language or medical skills -- say their clients have been discharged or had their military status put into doubt in recent days.

Some told the AP that they were given no reason why the discharges took place, while others said personal links to relatives living abroad led them to be labeled as security risks.

The U.S. had for years allowed skilled immigrants with legal status to enlist under the Military Accessions Vital to National Interest program, or MAVNI, and gain what President George W. Bush called "expedited naturalization" for their service.

Many were recruited to fill posts requiring medical expertise, including Army Reserve dentists, or specific language skills, including Russian and Mandarin Chinese, according to The Washington Post.

The AP noted that about 10,000 people are currently serving under the program and that, in order to gain citizenship, enlistees must be honorably discharged.

This looks like a situation where the Orange Effing Moron somehow heard of this longstanding program, probably from watching Fox and Friends or some other right-wing source, and went full orangutan.

The incentives are there, mainly gaining citizenship thru honorable military service. Only Trump can screw up an already working program that helps weaken the defense of the country.

This is a display of racism. Nothing more, nothing less. Yesterday I listened to a Reserve Army colonel who is also an immigration attorney on NPR. She said that overall these immigrants are far better educated than average American recruits, many having advanced degrees. We are losing valuable assets every time they discharge one of these people who had to be legal residents in the U.S. before they could even enlist. That means they were well vetted or they wouldn't even be here. Donald Trump is just a crazy racist lunatic that many of you idiots voted for. I feel sorry for you and for our country.

Oh come on guys, 40 out of more than 100,000? Things that get immigrants discharged. 1) Ten year limit, which was ignored for quite a while but now is being enforced. If you are on active duty, you have to become naturalized within 10 years. 2) Background flags, Sometimes people get flagged for criminal convictions in their nation of origin or fraudulent enlistment. 3) Failure to maintain standards, PT failure, not qualifying with your weapon, getting over weight, getting a lot of Art 15s or a criminal conviction in civilian court, just like every other soldier.

Under 100 out of 10,000 isn't too bad. I'm sure the washout rate for inability to get a security clearance for current US citizen enlistees must be that high or higher.

I responded to the parts of your post that are germane to the topic.

The fact that some citizens are not eligible to serve has nothing to do with us kicking out soldiers who would be qualified to serve if the Pentagon would merely process the necessary paperwork. The Pentagon's refusal to do that is a disservice to them, their colleagues, and to America. A "nation of laws" shouldn't act this way.

Sure snoofy. First of all, posts that aren't germane to the topic are common here. We're all guilty of it. No real excuse to ignore the whole post if you're going to reply to it.

As far as the topic goes, I was a Marine air wing avionics tech working on surveillance equipment. I required a top secret clearance. Authorities contacted family, friends and acquaintances. The military isn't a democracy. Kind of like a right to work state. They can bounce you for anything.

#52 | Posted by willowby at 2018-07-09 01:01 AM | Reply

#52 you're glossing over the point that people are not being bounced because of their past, but because the Pentagon simply isn't doing the background check.

The military isn't a democracy, but it should be able to follow its own procedures, not use their own refusal to process paperwork as the reason to let someone go for not having their paperwork done.

You know what a Catch-22 is? This is one.
