Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Seven members of the Aum Shinrikyo doomsday cult which carried out a deadly chemical attack on the Tokyo underground in 1995 have been executed, including cult leader Shoko Asahara. The Sarin attack, Japan's worst terror incident, killed 13 people and injured thousands more. The executions took place at a Tokyo detention house on Friday morning. Japan does not give prior notice of executions, but they were later confirmed by the justice ministry.

Shoko Asahara and his followers were also accused of several other murders and an earlier Sarin gas attack in 1994 which killed eight and left 600 injured.

Their execution, by hanging, had been postponed until all those convicted had completed their final appeals. That happened in January.

Another six members of the cult are still on death row.

Japan tends to be a nice country.

It's good they remind people that they are not without their limits.

As someone who has had chemical warfare training, I would like to comment on this story but I can't. Dammit.

#4 Uh, no. I'm pretty sure you missed the point. Look, I've been deposed in a lawsuit before, and although our company was found 100% not negligible, the lawyers cost so much money my boss complained that he could have bought a Porsche for that much. So I'm pretty sure that rcade doesn't wan't to get sued by a foreign totalitarian government after that x-xxxx was issued to every newspaper in it's land.

Democracy dies in darkness. Remember that.

#4 And by totalitarian government, I don't mean Japan. I mean another foreign country. But mentioning it's name is probably not safe. At all.

What is a little scary is a few cult members were able to make enough Sarin to kill thousands, and would have if their delivery system had have been better. Sarin has been around for a century. It isn't hard to make, these cult members made their's on a dairy farm, from undiluted insecticide. No problem, it can be neutralized with strong bleach and generally a activated charcoal filter will protect an individual. What is much scarier is a pathogen, like small pox. Which BTW we are missing a few samples of. Anthrax, Plague, and other serious pathogens are available in any old cemetery, especially in the far north.
