A woman who climbed up to the robes of the Statue of Liberty to protest the separation of migrant families was taken into custody after a standoff with police on the Fourth of July. Authorities had tried to talk the woman down but she refused to leave. For nearly three hours, she crossed the base of the statue, at times sitting in the folds of the statue's dress and under Lady Liberty's sandal.

I think climbing the Statue of Liberty to protest the seperation of refugees from their children was a very appropriate and meaningful protest. "The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" Something has gone very wrong in America and Trump is a symptom of that.

Very wasteful.

At the same time, all of the money spent and lives lost over black people literally existing is a worthwhile expenditure.

I know, it is simply amazing that arresting and deporting illegals just started under Trump.

I heard she was rescued just in time to head to her welfare office and collect her monthly disability check.

"I forgot that kids were "ripped" from their families and put in dog cages"

From Fox and Friends:
"...some have referred to them as ‘cages,' but, keep in mind, this is a great, big warehouse facility where they built walls out of chain link fences."
~Steve Doocy

Danni if a firefighter or policeman been injured rescuing her would it have still made it meaningful? The people who make policy aren't going to care some idiot decided to climb the Statue of Liberty and neither are 99% of voters.

Hey she got up and stood up for her beliefs. Most of us just sit on our keisters and complain present company included. Maybe if our policies weren't so damning she wouldn't have felt the need to do this.

No, as it states, it is a large warehouse where they used chain link for walls. The left wants you to believe that they built 4x4 dog cages to house them in.

Here's the thing, we haven't had a great immigration policy EVER in this country. Even when the millions were coming through Ellis Island we sent many back home often for petty reasons. We kept changing policies dependent on the political climate. At different times there were many immigrant people hated by many in this country - the Irish, Italians, Poles, Japanese, Chinese etc. At this time it is the Hispanics - lumped by many on the right under "Mexicans". Most are not even Mexicans coming here at this time either. How many of you come from one of those groups that was hated, marginalized or otherwise mistreated upon their arrival here?

Speaking frankly. We created the mess in central America with our "war on drugs" and other policies of the last 100+ years. The War on Drugs has truly led to the rise of the violence these people are facing right now. As a country - right or left - we should be ashamed of or at least accept our responsibility for what we have done to these countries and these people. I would hope our capacity for empathy, understanding and justice has evolved in the past 100 years but at this time it doesn't appear it has for far too many. I would hope we were better as a people. I know not all but many if not most of these people are refugees our country's actions are directly responsible for making.

Frankly I am tired of the drivel from the party of personal responsibility on immigration. There is no action other than trying to refuse these people while their latest god emperor does nothing but demonize them.

No the "left" doesn't want you to believe that. Pictures are worth a thousand words. It's a freaking cage. Would you prefer to call it a kennel?

What would you describe the actions taken by ICE as if not "ripped"? Parents were literally cut off from their kids with apparently little or no explanation of what was going to happen. The kids in the cages had to take care of the infants and toddlers in the cages as apparently nobody else was doing it. Then the kids were shipped all over the country.

"they used chain link for walls."

The same type of chain link used for dog cages.

"The left wants you to believe that they built 4x4 dog cages to house them in."

I guarantee the cages are smaller than the cage my dog boards in.

"it is a large warehouse where they used chain link for walls."

The walls of the cages, not the walls of the warehouse.

#17 exactly it wasn't a rescue it was an apprehension, but byrdman is still right. If a police officer or firefighter had been hurt, , charges would certainly be held against her.

#18 When you say "apparently" is that because people only heard about it and never actually saw it happen?

Some folks made profoundly uncomfortable when experiencing others who do not resemble themselves in the mirror are natural-born racists. The cause is likely genetic or a defect from undisclosed alcohol or chemical abuse during pregnancy.

They cain't hep'it.

It was really sarcasm because despite the fact I have not witnessed it given all the different accounts from different parents in the media it is hard to deny the reality of what has happened. Are they all making it up?

I wonder how that crap plays in Congo?

I support her right to make a statement; the disorderly conduct, interference with government function and forcing park closure not as much. I'm glad R&R did not do this on the day I had ticket to go out there. We booked months in advance and I'm not sure how the nephews would have taken it.

If it was on NY property she'd probably walk on the charges. Difficult to say what the Federal Court will do.

One thing y'all didn't bring up was that there were 3000 other people on Liberty Island who were evacuated as per SOP. No one knew what her motives were, what she had with her, or what she intended to do. So the authorities responded as if it was a worse case and eventually found that it wasn't. Still I thought it was more than a little unfair that everyone else who had to leave early because one individual decided that her statement could usurp everyone else's right to visit the statue. Trespassing on a National Park property can be a felony. People go to prison for that offense.

#31 | Posted by docnjo at 2018-07-06 09:51 AM | Reply

To #30 - There are around 3 million US children who have some or all of their parents in jail. You're right that is the American way. There are more folks in US jails than are in jails in any other country. Many separated children stay with family members or otherwise get placed in foster care.

Though it would cure some symptoms, I'm not sure DSA platform (rising stars!) solves the problems:
Abolish ICE
Do away with prisons
Open the border
Freebies for all who can get here!

I wonder if a billion people could fit on the USA part of North America?
