Since those eloquent words adopted 242 years ago today as the bedrock foundation of America's Declaration of Independence, the United States has remained steadfastly true to its nation-defining goals. It's not always been easy or without pain, anger and bloodshed, but in those 2 1/2 centuries, the United States has worked consistently to slowly but surely expand its commitment to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness to an increasingly large segment of our increasingly diverse populace.

The 4th of July used to be my favorite holiday as a kid. I couldn't wait to buy fireworks, especially bottle rockets. Unfortunately, the small ones are illegal in Texas now. I think half the reason I got a degree in chemistry is because I wanted to know the chemical reactions involved. Back in the mid 80s, a friend of mine was on a BBS and downloaded a list of recipes for making gunpowder, smoke bombs, etc. Thank God I couldn't get a hold of potassium triiodide. But the local pharmacist had potassium nitrate and sulfur on hand. I went to the local Purina farm supply store to buy a 50 lb bag of sulfur and the guy wouldn't sell it to me. He might've saved my life. LOL.

#9 MS, we Texans may just be like that. As kids we would take the small ones apart and combine the powder in old shotgun shells, which, of course, we used to to blow stuff up.

When I was in my early teens my best friend's older brother was a truck driver who used to buy M80s, quarter/half loads, blasting caps and det cord down in Mexico and bring them to NorCal. We blew up everything that we could (pretty safely), it was literally a blast.

Got two smokers running right now.

Started some beef ribs about 11 and just threw on some pork ribs on in another.

When the beef ribs are done I'll resurrect the fire and throw on some fresh mesquite to smoke the veggies for Goatman's 3 day chili recipe.

I'm gonna be eating really well the next four to five days.

Because (to repeat myself) they're already here doing the work that Americans refuse to do. That by itself is worthy of merit and respect.

I will say that you are asking a legitimate question based on principle -- but these illegal immigrants (sans citizenship) are not marauding through out the countryside defiantly flaunting America's laws and causing mayhem, they're living in the shadow's while sustaining themselves in ways that misguided Americans find beneath them.

Your question would have had a chance in persuading me when I was younger, in my twenties and thirties ... but I'm on the long side of 50 and I now understand that's there's a discerning time and place when principle matters, and this ain't it.

We know what needs to be done to fix the policy, so we need to fix it and give the illegals amnesty in a human way, and to hell with the right-wing activists and Trump voters who'll ridiculously go bananas -- time to move on.

I see Dulli still supports the labor shortage and the record low birthrate over immigration. You'd think that maybe on Independence Day he'd want even his Dear Leader to obey the law, as Fed Judges have ruled he is not with asylum seekers and with separating families, but no, he's more concerned about, "the queue".

Admitted Republican voters are like that.

#11 When I was a kid the local Volunteer Fire Department would park a couple of trucks in the football field parking lot and let the public set off fireworks there. It's a shame they don't allow it anywhere within the city limits now, period. Though, I guess it's good from a safety standpoint. But it was fun to go out with my sister and father and set off the fireworks and watch other peoples' families also. Since my birthday was right around July 4th, I'd take about $10 from my birthday haul to the fireworks stand and try to get the best deals possible. Which ended up being a gross of bottle rockets for $5, and then a $5 variety pack of assorted stuff.

Thanks. The stupidest thing I did was make napalm. I couldn't get it to go out. Since the grass is usually dead by this time in Texas, it spread from the side of my house into the neighbor's yard before I could get it out.

I stopped playing with fire after that.

Yep. I joined the volunteer fire department for a couple years while I was going to the local community college as self-imposed community service to make amends for making a nuisance out of myself.

A buddy of mine in high school would make a gel coat a pair of gloves with it light it then run around the neighborhood screaming about being on fire.

He later took 10 hits of double dipped acid and ended up in the psych ward for almost a year.

Make of that what you will.

Apropos of nothing, OK, lsd, one of our dorm mates in college who sold clearlight on plastic tabs mistakenly took 4 hits that has frozen together in the freezer. He was an "overfed long haired leaping gnome" hippy, but after tripping for most of the week, he went and signed up at the campus ROTC.

He was never quite the same, and was forever after known as, "Air Force".
