The recent public shaming of Trump administration officials in restaurants has triggered an internal debate among Democrats over how far they should go in confronting the president and his policies. The boisterous protests against Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Trump advisor Stephen Miller as they dined in different Mexican restaurants, and the ejection of White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders by the owner of a Virginia eatery, caused some Democrats to embrace the strategy as an effective way to rally supporters and hold officials responsible. Monday, several Democrats warned that such actions could backfire by eliciting sympathy for Trump officials, rallying Republicans to the polls in midterms or leading to similar protests against liberals by Trump supporters.

It's rare that Pelosi and Schumer make sense, but this is one of those rare times that they get it right:

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer of New York went even further on the Senate floor Monday, saying that copying the president's abusive tactics isn't the answer.

"No one should call for the harassment of political opponents. That's not right. That's not American," he said. "The president's tactics and behavior should never be emulated. It should be repudiated by organized, well informed and passionate advocacy."

Good for them.

There's a not so fine line between harassment and speaking your mind.

I think people should absolutely speak their minds to these -------- and anyone who supports and agrees with them.

I give zero ----- about whether Shuckabee or Waffen SS had a rough night out. ---- em.

In the off chance that any Democratic US lawmaker is reading this blog, please don't puss out and try to out liberal each other to prove who's the most forgiving, supercilious, and masochistic.

The status quo you're enjoying as legislators isn't worth it if Donald Trump gets his way. Axelrod and Pelosi are wrong.

Trump's banking on the fact that the liberals will take the high road and consequently let him do whatever he wants. Our government works by debate, not a lying bully running roughshod over the Congress. Stand up to the Republicans and make them work for it if they're intent on supporting this madman.

Wake up and do your jobs.

There's a not so fine line between harassment and speaking your mind.

The Left is obviously crossing that line because they are losing their minds that for some reason Trump is still President.

Thanks for confirming that you are part of the problem, but I thought you were smarter than that.

I guess not.

I remember the establishment was outraged by some of things Vietnam War protesters did and said. Comparing the evil done by that same establishment to bad words always made me laugh. This administration is tearing little kids away from their mothers, a little harassment in a restaurant is so minor in comparison as to be laughable.

Then get off your butts and get out there.

They have the most to lose.

They know all about nonviolent peaceful resistance and civil disobedience.

They certainly have a lot of experience and we can definitely use their energy.

Good old Chuck, he is only saying this because if he doesn't it will hurt Dems in the midterms. But I love how Chuck blames this on Trump. He is a reptile.

Isn't it the world Trump and the Republicans want? Where public insults are the order of the day, and business owners can turn anyone away if they have a sincere disagreement?

Why not own it?

Funny we never hear about republicans doing this. And if your talking about the cake the owner did not refuse to serve them, he refused to decorate a cake they wanted. They could have bought any other cake, cookies, whatever else they wanted. I would agree with you if he had done what a Dem would have done and told them to get the f out of the store and then run across the street and tell other store owners to do the same it would have been a problem. Big difference.

We aren't harassing political opponents; that is confusion on behalf of her occupation. We're harassing overt criminals actively dismantling the reputation and power of the US.

Maybe we have a difference of opinion over what exactly " doing this " is; but in my book, this is a Republican " doing this" :

www.nydailynews.com

This is another Republican "doing this":

www.snopes.com

I could post more examples, but really, would more get you to change your mind?

Despite the wide condemnation of Pelosi and Schumer by the right, dems should not allow the opposition to select their leaders. I am not a fan of Schumer because of his close ties to wall street and Israel. I have tremendous respect for Pelosi for her achievements as well as her political acumen. However, Pelosi is out of touch with what it will take to defeat trumplicans this fall. Dems need to amp up the passion by adopting policies and strategies that will encourage reluctant democratic leaning voters to vote or register and vote. This will generally mean adopting more populist positions similar to those expressed by Sanders in the 2016 democratic primaries. Dems will have to make commitments to help solve some of the problems afflicting poor, urban communities. Trotting out Obama to appeal to struggling black folk is not going to work. He had his shot and, in my opinion, flubbed it.
