WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump announced a halt to joint military exercises with South Korea on Tuesday, raising alarm at the Pentagon, in Congress and among allies that the U.S. might back away from longstanding defense commitments in the region without concrete concessions from long-belligerent North Korea.

"These exercises for years have served as an important signal that the United States supports our allies in the region," Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said in a statement. "It concerns me that the president is making concessions to North Korea with nothing to show in return."

Sen. David Perdue of Georgia, a Republican member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, told reporters he was "very troubled" and "surprised."

The annual exercises, which include warplanes and naval maneuvers, have been held since at least 1976 to help the allied forces prepare for a possible North Korea attack.

Of course Trump is effing this up, he's a clueless idiot.

If Obama had a historic meeting with Comrade Kim, progressives would be demanding a second Nobel Peace Prize to make up for the lunacy of the first one.

If Obama did it, he would be lauded by the lefties as a savior, and chagrined by the right. Similar to Trump's grade of his NK meetup in SG.

Not that hard to get. Really.

I haven't criticized Trump for the meeting nor did I think it was a bad idea when Obama said he would do it, so I'm not sure how your statement relates to me.

The point of my post is that the very same people who are gushing with praise for Trump's brilliant foreign policy moves called Obama a traitor for saying he'd do the same thing.

It was an accurate statement.

So?

It doesn't add to the conversation. It's a passive aggressive "shut up".

Just because there are partisans, doesn't mean Trumpublicans wouldn't have lost their minds had Obama bent knee to Kim Jong-Un the way Trump did.

The only deal Trump made was stoping joint military operations with South Korea in exchange for beach front property rights.

And all you manage to vomit up is garbage equivalents.

If this "deal" is so great, why is Pompeo getting so defensive when he is asked questions about it?:

the Peter Baker @peterbakernyt

Reporter: "The president said it will be verified."

Pompeo: "Of course it will."

Q: "Can you tell us a little bit more about--what is, what discussed about how?"

Pompeo: "Just so you know, you could ask me this, I find that question insulting & ridiculous & frankly ludicrous."

The fact that you think this was a success means you are a monumental idiot who knows nothing about North Korea or an extraordinary liar. Either way no one with half a brain thinks DPRK repeating lies of the past while we unilaterally give up joint exercises is a "win".

Steve Schmidt @SteveSchmidtSES

Claims of achievements from this summit are nonsensical. Trump got nothing except empty promises. Kim Jong Un achieved global standing for his evil regime and got military exercises cancelled. The sycophantic panting and exultations across the GOP and Trump media are delusional

Hailed it? What's "it"?

Tentative agreement? What "agreement"?

Obama actually got Iran to halt their nuclear program and republicans were furious.

Trump got nothing but lip service and Trumpublicans are swooning.

What "agreement"?

NK completely denuclearizes in exchange for the US to halt war exercises in S Korea.

That is the agreement. I call it tentative because it doesn't include any enforcement mechanisms or verification and mostly it remains to be seen whether or not Kim is even serious, or is just trying to play Trump.

I don't trust Kim and i doubt he had some kind of epiphany that brought him to this point.

So. North Korea is going to "give up" its failed and crippled nuclear program.

And we cut military exercises with South Korea.

Which, South Korea never asked for.

Does Kim step down and do North and South Korea unify?

Is North Korea willing to allow nuclear inspectors?

Are they expected to give up their military?

Apples and oranges. Obama gave away the house for a possible 10-year postponement of Iran's nuclear program. His administration tried to sell it to the public by blatantly lying to the public and congress, repeatedly and often. It was a deal borne out of naivete and wishful thinking, at best.

This thing with NK is at most a small, first-step. I don't know why anyone is championing it or lampooning it.

#31 Read #28 in its entirety. I acknowledged that none of the legitimate concerns you raised are addressed in this deal.

#34 | Posted by JeffJ at 2018-06-13 06:33 PM | Reply

Apples and oranges.

You mean Obama and Trump.

You support an supposed deal where we give up our military presence in South Korea.

Yet don't support an actual deal for Iran to halt their nuclear program in exchange for returning their money to them. A deal, which was working.

It's literally Obama vs Trump.

#35 | Posted by ClownShack at 2018-06-13 06:39 PM | Reply

No, I mean the stark differences between the 2 deals far outweigh any similarities.

And this deal doesn't give up our military presence in S Korea. I saw no mention of troop/equipment reductions or outright withdrawal. Please don't be disingenuous.

Also, this isn't really even a deal - it's a possible first-step. Nothing more.

The deals are the same. Halting current nuclear ambitions.

In exchange. Iran got access to its own money.

In exchange, China/Russia/and North Korea got America to abandon South Korea.

"I saw no mention of troop/equipment reductions or outright withdrawal. Please don't be disingenuous."

Not doing readiness exercises (war games) we've been doing for decades is called "standing down."

If you were an honest person, you'd acknowledge that.

But I suppose it's also a possibility your illiteracy extends to military affairs.

Sean Hannity said in 2008 that Obama's willingness to meet with North Korea was "disturbing" while Trump's "willingness to meet with North Korea is a huge foreign policy win."
