N.Y. Senate Bill 2318, just unanimously passed by the state Senate this week, would make it a crime for any person (adult or minor) to "knowingly engage[] in a repeated course of cyberbullying of a minor." The new provision would become § 12-a of the New York Education Law, and § 11 of the Law defines "cyberbullying" as "harassment or bullying" "through any form of electronic communication," and defines "harassment or bullying" in turn as[:]

First Amendment or coddle minors? Should it extend to hypersensitive adults?

The kids should be more worried about the 2nd amendments abuse.

Things which Trumpublicans cant bring themselves to commit to regarding the protection of America's children:

Lead in their water.
Physical bullying.
Cyber bullying.
Asbestos poisoning.
Mass school shootings.
Malnutrition.
Pre-existing conditions.
Mental health care.
Medical care.
Discrimination regarding gender.

There are more, but it is too depressing to go on...

You seem to think of this as a "one-off", when reality is it's daily, constant and inescapable.

Bullying is still very real, causing nothing but painful outcomes. Suicide rates among youth are directly indicative of abuse, usually including first amendment abuse both online and in school.

Also, the second amendment is also being abused - STUDENTS ARE BEING SHOT IN CLASSROOMS. GUESS WHAT - THOSE STUDENTS ARE OFTEN BULLIED THEMSELVES.

You seem to think ...

That which is not disclosed by posting a thread and asking two questions. Your infantile projection notwithstanding.

That said, what say you about the NY Senate voting for a law that criminalizes First Amendment activity?

I'd say it's an investigation worth taking on. If appropriate research can point to suicidal ideation being positively correlated with online bullying amongst juveniles, it may be a worthwhile discussion (though I doubt such research is being considered for the current discussion, so therefor I am against this move). Especially when it involves adults bullying minors online; I'm more reserved about the situation when it's a minor doing the bullying against another minor; full reservations when it's a minor bullying an adult.

I'm not so sure about the adult bullying the adult, though. I'd need to see the research mentioned above before taking on the adult matter as I have greater concern for the juveniles being harmed than the adults (sorry BOAZ).

I feel like you're intent on casting this as a First Amendment issue when clearly there are competing interests.

New York has plenty of laws that criminalize First Amendment activity, you sound like a moron, but I can understand if you just hit the bottle early today.

Retorters need to be careful how they treat other posters here. Any one of us could be an FBI agent pretending to be minor begging for abuse.

If kids were raised today like they were 20 years ago we would not have nearly the problems we are having today. If parents were actually parents and not trying to be their kids friends we would be better off as well. Also they have to stop telling kids they are special above others and they deserve things that they don't. it is like a meme I saw on Facebook they show a kid with his parents in front of a teacher the kid has bad grades and in the shot from 20 years ago the parents are mad at the kid yet the shot from today and the parents are mad at the teacher. This is how this country will go to ----. In the 1940's teenagers were storming Normandy now the need a safe space because they hear a view they don't agree with.

It takes a special kind of denial to blame the state of things on kids, who can't vote, have no political power, and didn't do anything.

20 years ago was 1998 and people were saying the exact same thing back then.
