Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Saturday, June 09, 2018

President Trump said Saturday that he brought up with America's closest allies the dramatic prospect of completely eliminating tariffs on goods and services, even as he threatened to end all trade with his counterparts if they do not stop what he says are unfair trade practices. Speaking to reporters at the end of a contentious weekend meeting of the Group of 7 nations in a resort town outside Quebec City, Mr. Trump said that eliminating all trading barriers would be "the ultimate thing." But he railed about what he called "ridiculous and unacceptable" tariffs on American goods and vowed to get rid of them. "It's going to stop. Or we'll stop trading with them. And that's a very profitable answer, if we have to do it," Mr. Trump said, adding, "We're like the piggy bank that everybody's robbing and that ends."

Traitor Trump is doing Putin's dirty work.

Pathetic

The man is out of his mind and I doubt that the Republicans will tolerate his destruction of business potential. He is bringing on his own destruction. He can do most anything he wants but when he starts hurting business he's done. What a fool! Oh, and I agree with Pinchaloaf, what a traitor. Putin is definitely pullin his strings. He should be impeached for treason.

Danni,

Any other time I would say Trump's actions are unnecessarily extreme.

I wouldn't begin to speak like an authority on trade or international politics but I can see one thing.

America is fast going deeper in debt and the rest of world will just sit back and watch.

Debt is not some infinite resource.

Other countries cry to America for help but who can America cry to?

These are desperate times and as the saying goes "desperate times call for desperate measures".

I certainly can't say if Trump is making the best choices but at least I understand why he's doing it.

I work in accounting and you just can't run a business or a government wastefully indefinately.

At some point the rubber meets the road and I'm afraid that is exactly where America is finding itself.

Decades of quick irresponsible profits and passing the buck or should I say passing the debt?

America has got to take action.

It's time.

You started off well enough, but then you drifted off into la-la land

Trump is the Debt King.

If you think he's going to reduce the debt, you haven't been paying attention.

If you think any GOP President is going to reduce the debt, you haven't been paying attention.

He's not paying attention...as evidenced by the half-dozen thoughtless platitudes.

Conservatives in general reduce a complex polynomial, multivariable equation, through as many derivatives as it takes, to a ridiculously simple linear f(x) = x. Then wing it with clichés and --------.

Has any president in history significantly reduced the debt?

You're not gonna like the answer. But,

Public debt as a percentage of GDP fell rapidly in the post-World War II period, and reached a low in 1973 under President Richard Nixon. Debt as a share of GDP has consistently increased since then, except during the terms of presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. Public debt rose during the 1980s, as President Reagan cut tax rates and increased military spending. It fell during the 1990s, due to decreased military spending, increased taxes and the 1990s boom. Public debt rose sharply in the wake of the 2007–08 financial crisis and the resulting significant tax revenue declines and spending increases.
