Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, May 16, 2018

On Mother's Day, employees at a Cheesecake Factory in Miami, Florida, verbally attacked and made threatening gestures toward a black man who dined with his girlfriend's family simply because he was wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat, according to multiple witnesses interviewed by The Daily Wire.

The Sunday incident allegedly began at the Cheesecake Factory located inside Dadeland Mall when 22-year-old Eugenior Joseph was seated while wearing his MAGA hat.

According to multiple witnesses and Joseph's own account, a woman who worked at the restaurant walked up to him and started pointing at his hat, signaling for the other employees to come over.

At that point, approximately a dozen or so employees approached the table and began making comments about the hat, with some saying they wanted to punch Joseph in the face. Witnesses also allege that some of the employees also referred to him as a "n**ger" in their conversations among each other.

Cheesecake Factory: MAGA hat incident overblown

Two employees who made "disparaging remarks" about a customer's "Make America Great Again" cap are no longer employed at The Cheesecake Factory, the company said Wednesday. However, the casual-dining chain believes the incident is being blown out of proportion.

The widely publicized episode at a Cheesecake Factory restaurant in Miami occurred on Sunday, with a Daily Wire report quoting multiple witnesses as saying that the customer, Eugenior Joseph, had been surrounded by about a dozen Cheesecake employees. Joseph told the conservative news site that one employee tried to physically intimidate him, while others were "screaming things at me."

"Not all of the information reported by the media accurately portrays what occurred," a Cheesecake Factory spokesperson told CBS MoneyWatch in a statement. "The situation may have been exacerbated by an all-staff meeting that took place during our shift change between our staff members working the lunch and dinner shifts – which may have been perceived as a crowd gathering near the guests' tables."

Cheesecake Factory, which operates 214 locations throughout North America, reiterated its disappointment over the incident, and said it hoped to speak with Joseph.

"No guest should ever feel unwelcome in one of our restaurants and we are very sorry," the company said in its statement. "Our investigation is ongoing and we have reached out to Mr. Joseph directly to ask for his assistance."

Cheesecake Factory shares have dropped more than 2 percent since news of the incident surfaced.

The two workers who were involved were fired, as they should have been. It doesn't matter if someone is wearing a MAGA hat or an "I'm with her T-shirt", they have the right to do so and should be allowed to eat in peace.

The dick was wearing a hat at the dinner table. For that he should be shunned alone, regardless of what was on the hat.

I am noticing a notable absence of posts from certain people who normally flock to threads of this nature (some of whom are actively posting as I am typing this).

I should have changed the headline from a MAGA hat to a Hope and Change hat. It would have been obviously deceptive, but I strongly suspect some DR regulars, who are currently avoiding this thread, would have weighed in based solely on the headline.

I didn't see where they called the cops and had him arrested and thrown out. And they were fired for being rude to a customer.

So I don't see the comparison at all.

But, enjoy your little moment of faux rage.

False stories
According to Snopes, "DailyWire.com has a tendency to share stories that are taken out of context or not verified."[11] Among the falsehoods published on the Daily Wire include "leftists" digging up Confederate graves, Democratic congresspeople refusing to stand for a fallen Navy SEAL's widow, and Harvard University holding segregated commencement ceremonies.[11]

FactCheck.Org found that the Daily Wire was the source of a false story which credited Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson with finding over $500 billion in accounting errors made by the Obama administration. According to FactCheck.Org found that the errors were discovered and published by HUD's independent inspector general before Carson became secretary.[12]

The Daily Wire has published a number of articles which cast doubt that climate change is occurring and that humans contribute to climate change. Experts have described the articles as inaccurate and misleading.[13][14][15][non-primary source needed]

#12 - OK - bad comparison on my part.

I do wonder though, how differently this would have been reported if this guy was wearing a "Hope and Change" hat in lieu of a MAGA hat.

So, Laura is seeking to discredit the source in general, yet offers up no rebuttal for this story in particular.

Laura was attacking the credibility of Daily Wire as a source.

I was waiting for her to provide a source that attacks the veracity (rebuts) of what is being reported here.

See post #3 for that, but what does it matter anyway? Why should she dispute the facts here?

#20 | Posted by DirkStruan at 2018-05-16 03:50 PM | Reply

#3 provided some context in terms of the restaurant's side of the story, which was a worthy addition to the discussion IMO.

It doesn't address my question - Were the actions of the employees who were fired acts of racism?

#21 | Posted by JeffJ at 2018-05-16 03:55 PM | Reply

Jeff, I think the usage of the "N" word qualifies it as racism.

Unless the employees saying that were black....and then it's not.....

Just to be clear - everyone is carrying this. Maybe not as loudly as some would like. I think what they did to him was wrong. IF there were actually more than 2 then they should have all lost their jobs. No customer should be treated that way without cause. And generally being stupid isn't cause.

I personally wonder if it was a stunt or not... Seems like a plausible way to seek a payout but Cheescake Factory is small potatoes if it was.

It's "newsworthy" that you can't/won't define racism, JefJ.

This explains succinctly why you can't/won't see it.

You laughing it off it a pretty standard deflection tactic as well. Right out of a Psych 101 textbook.

What I was laughing at was you, the most racially-obsessed person on this site, asking for a definition of racism. When it comes to you, a far better question is, what isn't racism? That is much more easy to define as you tend to regard just about everything as racist.

Believe it or not, my question isn't a 'gotcha'. I know you (and apparently Dirk) view it that way, which is why you've both avoided addressing it like the plague, but it's not a 'gotcha'.

Maybe even say "thank you" to all the people like Jeff, who don't slap them around quite as much as they used to or would like to.

As for me.....I am 50/50 on this. I generally agree with Trueblue and JPW. Having said that, was the reaction solely due to the hat, or was it because it was a black man wearing the hat? I watch the vicious reaction to Kanye West's recent comments and some of it is pure racism - How DARE he leave the plantation of monolithic thought. Kanye is bombastic and in a vacuum I could slough some of the reaction to him off, but it didn't occur in a vacuum and it's the whole "Uncle Tom" theme that we've seen over and over again.

Setting aside this isn't really an apt description of what he said, how is "How DARE he leave the plantation of monolithic thought" racist?
Since you won't define racism, maybe you can at least explain how that's racist.

Please explain. Your claim is ridiculous. Stop repeating what you hear and educate yourself. What exactly was that supposed to prove? When your point is based entirely on an assumption, you didn't have a point to begin with. In order to make your point, you had to make something up completely. See the problem? Anything else that you would like to make up? The rest of your post was just mindless. I think you have only shown that you assume too much.
Do you ever actually understand what you are commenting on or does stupidity just take hold? Does anyone really understand what this person is babbling about?
