Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

North Korea has cancelled talks with South Korea scheduled for Wednesday, and threatened to cancel next month's summit between President Trump and Kim Jong-un over joint U.S.-South Korean military drills, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap. This is a dramatic change in tone from North Korea, which recently released three U.S. prisoners and began dismantling a nuclear test site as part of efforts to lay the groundwork for talks with Trump. North Korea has long viewed the drills as a rehearsal for invasion, but had remained uncharacteristically silent about exercises last month.

Somehow I don't think Kim cares nearly as much about that Peace Prize and Trump does.

Not if you plan to continue them until the talks produce real action towards denuclearization of the North. Drills can be used as bargaining chips.

Or maybe you think that a fake celebration closing an already destroyed facility is real action.

Impossible

jeffytoecentrebrley have already claimed peace has been won and North Korea denuclearized.

a perfect example of trumps' overall awareness of the tasks at hand. a wasted chance to appear magnanimous on the world stage. it would have cost his position nothing to postpone the maneuvers with SK. it would have one upped the NK prisoner release. trump is the kind of guy who thinks he's a good poker player because he buys the pot..

Maybe it's all part of Trump's reality TV vision of politics: create drama, conflict, tension and then give his final thumb's up or down to a deal or no deal.

Anyone who's ever spent time in Asia will tell you that this is how they negotiate.

They push forward, then draw back. They show you the fish, then announce "no sale".

When you walk away, they drop to your last price, and beg you to buy. Watch.

At least Humpy will always have that. Though we all know Humpy only likes Americans who don't get captured. And I guess it's just too bad for the 500 or so South Koreans who have been captured. I am sure Humpy is blissfully unaware of their existence.

Trump thrives on chaos; chaos that he creates. Trump is accustomed to dealing with rational people. He knows that by creating chaos, rational people will react by trying to stabilize the situation. This stabilization process is the opening that he uses to win concessions.

Kim Jung-un is playing the same game. However, this time, Kim Jung-un is creating the chaos and Trump is left to play the role of the rational actor. Trump is unfamiliar with that role and has taken more time than is usual to formulate a response.

Trump doesn't realize that his delayed response is a rational act. Had he reacted immediately by also threatening to scuttle the talks, he might have regained/maintained the upper hand. At this point, Trump's likely move is to direct his negotiators to refuse any private talks with NK negotiators; have the Chinese and/or South Koreans apply pressure on Kim. Publicly, the only statement the Trump administration should make is that they are considering the announcement of the North Koreans. Privately, he should move another destroyer into the area.

There may yet be a summit, but not before Kim has humiliated the United States a few more times.

Kim knows Trump wants a Peace Prize, one like Obama has.

Trump probably also wants a Black wife for the same reason.
