This community voted overwhelmingly for Donald Trump. But now his immigration restrictions are killing its livelihood - legendary crabs that are a mainstay of the local economy and a regional delicacy. For decades, Hoopers Island, known for its crabbing industry, has relied on a federal seasonal work program - known as H-2B visas -- to keep its businesses humming. This has allowed employers to hire foreigners, mostly Mexican women, to come temporarily to pick crab meat.

'"You've got to have workers," Powley said."

You can't tell a man who has never worked about workers.

FTA: But given the chance, many Hoopers Island residents say they'd vote for Trump again. They believe that if he only knew about their plight, he would change his policy.

Everything affects everything.

So sorry. They were warned. They voted for a thief, a liar and a corrupt conman so they deserve what they get.

Trump does not care one bit about them.

And they would vote for him again. There is no curing stupid.

And people wonder what democrats have to do to win. How does one reach people like this? It is beyond me.

Crab bait: Trumps got my vote.

Blue crabs: Trump, president for life we say.

Try advertising a higher wage and you will attract employees. These capitalism-worshiping free market Republican businessmen seem awfully stupid when it comes down to basic economics. My labor is a product, if it is in short supply, the price goes up. If you can't afford it, charge more for the product of my labor or accept a lower profit or go out of business.

@#2 ... Nobody knew immigration policy was so complicated. ...

This is the gist of this issue, and many issues facing the Trump administration.

You can be transactional, and make snap judgments based upon narrow criteria.

Or you can be policy oriented, and make tactical decisions based upon attaining policy goals that have been set.

I'm left to wonder how many of the supporters of Pres Trump thought that the 160-character policy declarations were actually contemplated policy strategies, as opposed to being just words that candidate Trump's supporters wanted to hear.

Paul Waldman's article answers this question:

"So what are Democrats to do? The answer is simple: This is a game they cannot win, so they have to stop playing. Know at the outset that no matter what you say or do, Republicans will cry that you're disrespecting good heartland voters. There is no bit of PR razzle-dazzle that will stop them. Remember that white Republicans are not going to vote for you anyway, and their votes are no more valuable or virtuous than the votes of any other American. Don't try to come up with photo ops showing you genuflecting before the totems of the white working class, because that won't work. Advocate for what you believe in, and explain why it actually helps people.

Finally -- and this is critical -- never stop telling voters how Republicans are screwing them over. The two successful Democratic presidents of recent years were both called liberal elitists, and they countered by relentlessly hammering the GOP over its advocacy for the wealthy. And it worked"

There is nothing any of us can do. Not-liberals, who have only known Fox "news" propaganda for the last 20 years, are so divorced from reality that there is literally nothing we can do to change their minds. We see it daily on DR.

By the way, the Waldman article is a must read.

The Federal Government is going to repeat the failures of Alabama where crops rotted in the fields and Kansas where lowering taxes shrank the economy, on a far grander scale. This fits not just Conservative philosophy, but Einstein's definition of insanity.

There still is no plan to support cleanup of poisonous US water, but the Trump administration is moving quickly to save workers jobs in China's telecom company ZTE. ZTE's telephones are banned in the United States because their devices were recognized to have been engineered to be controlled by the Chinese Government and can be remotely activated for spying. Trump has connected his personal joint ventures with China to the health of ZTE and placed his personal finances before the best interests of the United States.

THIS is how we got stuck with Trump: people too goddamn stupid to realize that Trump doesn't care at all about anything, anyone but himself and his money.

I'm sure the Hoopers Island folks will get their seasonal workers, just after Trump Hotels and Resorts gets theirs...

It worked by costing the Democrats the House, then the Senate, then the Presidency.
In addition to thousands of local and state seats.
Fortunately some of those seats are going to roll back this year, but let's not pretend that it is going to make up for the years of growing Republican control.

Are you lying or just misinformed?
They are only prohibited from being sold on US military bases.
I can still carry a ZTE phone in the CIA (controlled information area) at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

It wasn't until after Dems had the White House that they would lose Congress. Generally after passing large pieces of legislation. That's fairly typical. Both parties lose a lot of votes in the first midterm after their president gets elected.

The Russian people used to say: "If only Stalin knew!"

Stalin not only knew, he was responsible.

"The two successful Democratic presidents of recent years were both called liberal elitists"

They call anyone who makes more money, has more education, or drives a car instead of a truck a liberal elitist.

Meanwhile, Trump has a chauffeur so he's immune. And he didn't make money he inherited it so he's immune. And Trump loves the poorly educated so they love him.

These problems could mostly be fixed in a generation or two, but when poor ignorant angry jealous whites are the key to your political success, it's understandable that white poverty, white xenophobia, and white provincialism sure don't seem like a problem worth solving.

The last two Republican presidents lost the popular vote and got into office. Bush was appointed by the Supreme Court and Drumpf was elected by slim margins in states that had massive voter suppression efforts underway. There's a lot more to it than, "People don't like Democratic Party ideas," and "Liberal elitists get what's coming to them."
