Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Scientists are preparing to create "miniature brains" that have been genetically engineered to contain Neanderthal DNA, in an unprecedented attempt to understand how humans differ from our closest relatives. In the next few months the small blobs of tissue, known as brain organoids, will be grown from human stem cells that have been edited to contain "Neanderthalised" versions of several genes. The lentil-sized organoids, which are incapable of thoughts or feelings, replicate some of the basic structures of an adult brain. They could demonstrate for the first time if there were meaningful differences between human and Neanderthal brain biology.

Of course they are. I mean, what kind of scientist are you if haven't grow a Neanderthal mini-brain in your lab? I mean, the other scientists would just laugh at you and push you down and stuff.

So, you say you were a lab rat before you became a Trump rat.

That makes sense of why you support Trump quashing Fed studies on chemical pollution... wait, I bet you were in that study, too.

#3 Jesus. Sometimes I just can't believe the raw insanely hysterical hatred you can find on this blog. It really is sort of freaky.

How do you figure?

These scientists are just adding more to the crowd of intellectually superior brains out there.

How will new knowledge be used? Not as Jonas Salk did, in service to mankind, but only if profits can be squeezed out of the deal, which us an abuse of science. Historically our Government has supported big science in health, physics, space travel and much hi-tech development. But that era is disappearing as our standard of living falls.

Maybe we should not really look into recreating the Neanderthal. Science has come further in the last few years understanding what these humans were. First they were intelligent, they had a brain slightly larger than ours. They were a pure predator, 98% of their diet was meat. They could see in lower light, their eye sockets were much larger. The Neanderthal was three to five times stronger than ---- Sapiens, heavily built. Likely had a lot of body hair. So the Neanderthal was basically a super predator, Able to hunt at night, overpower their prey, endure extreme weather, and survive longer than modern man has so far. Let them stay in history, as for me, I don't want to meet one.

Like it or not, big pharma/biotech is necessary at this time for new discoveries and treatments to reach the market.

A company won't buy the rights to something that isn't patented because what's the point of buying it if everyone can make it?

I think drug pricing is a major issue that needs to be fixed but considering the major advances made in medicine and tech in recent decades I'd say the current system, although imperfect, is pretty ---- good.

"Maybe we should not really look into recreating the Neanderthal."

They walk among us with tiki torches shouting "blood and soil" and "Russia is our friend" already.

Sorry JPW, it is not "necessary", however, it is integral to our current political construct.

#9 | Posted by Nixon, They are on the same evolutionary level as those individuals wearing black and covering their faces with bandanas. Those who want to fight usually find one.

I read somewhere that most of us have some DNA from Neanderthals.

#12 | Posted by danni, Europeans and Asians have 3% to 5%, Africans have none. Neanderthals were probity not killed out, their number were never as large as the Africans coming into Europe and Asia. They were likely bred out of existence. Hybrid individuals have been found.

What is this gibberish? They aren't recreating them. They are only creating mini-brains to study in comparison to ours. I'm not even sure we have the technology to create an actual Neanderthal if we wanted to.

#13 Asians and Europeans have 3 to 5%.

I have a black buddy that was telling me that, meaning that his people were the most pure race.

Oh well, I gave that one to him. Held my Neanderthal side in check.☺

#14 | Posted by Sycophant We can't recreate them YET. Give them another five to ten years and we will see. They already have the entire genome, and less than 1% is different from ours.

Yep 35,000 years ago ---- sapiens would bring gifts and furs to the Neanderthal females and would get busy with them while while the Neanderthal males were busy out side the cave being a super predator.

Flash forward 35,000 years and you would not believe what some women will do for a fur coat ...

If Neanderthals were super intelligent, they would bring chocolates too.

#17 | Posted by Pegasus, With their strength, they could just take what they wanted. With the ability to see in low light, they could surprise any group of African settlers with impunity. Beyond that, hunter gatherers tend to treat sex as a form of recreation. They and we still aren't very picky. Novelty is it's own appeal.
