Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Saturday, May 12, 2018

Michigan Republicans are pushing a new, Donald Trump-inspired bill that would require Medicaid recipients in the state's mostly black cities to work to keep their health benefits, but exempt some of the state's rural white residents from the same requirement. ... Under the bill, Medicaid recipients in 17 mostly white counties, all represented by Republican senators, would be exempt from the work requirements, according to an analysis by the Center for Michigan, a liberal think tank. But Medicaid recipients in the six municipalities with the highest unemployment rates, including Detroit and Flint, would have to work at least 29 hours a week to keep their health benefits. All six cities have black majorities or significant numbers of black residents.

"The racial consequences are unmistakable," University of Michigan Law School professors Nicholas Bagley and Eli Savit wrote in The New York Times. The disparate racial impact of the proposal, they said, would be vulnerable to a court challenge because it would violate federal civil rights laws.

Obviously they need to include all municipalities that meet the criteria.

I'm curious to see how this requirement works.

If this passes some lawyers are going to make a lot of money.

Just put up some posters showing Medicaid recipients that are looking for places to rent in white areas and this idea will get killed.

This is NOT a racist policy.

Talking about the inequitable impacts of the law is fair game. Too bad nobody wants to talk about that, because it's more profitable to frame it as race war click bait, which will cause most people to tune out.

Probly bc too many ppl leaching the system in these areas...black..white..green doesnt matter..if the money isnt there...its not there...theyre just trying to recoup taxes sounds like..and a byproduct would be less ppl with "freetime" on their hands..so crime would go down..win win...in all fairness though i think any recipient should have to give back somehow...community service would be a perfect start

Amazing.

I took the headline and plugged it into Google to see what the results would be.

Shockingly / snark

A perfunctory search didn't show any local media (Detroit Free Press, Detroit News, Macomb Daily, Oakland Press, Observer and Eccentric, etc) reporting on this at all.

Maybe HuffPo is ahead of the curve and scooped this. Maybe not.

Color me skeptical until some local media sources corroborate this.

Do you deny that the law contains the provision?

BTW all you had to do was click on something called "hyperlink".

Don't be in such a rush to defend the transparently ---- policies of your party and you won't step in the giant piles they leave lying around.

Apartheid was a system explicitly based on race. This comparison is feeding into the fake news narrative.

"Do you deny that the law contains the provision?"

Obviously he denies it. He'll deny it until it's talked about in his local media. He gets to make the rules.

"Apartheid was a system explicitly based on race."

Whereas this system is only implicitly based on race, giving racists plausible deniability that it's racist. #MAGA

Sure they are. They don't use the same headline but there is sufficient criticism of the same type in the stories and editorial pages.

Detroit Free Press:
www.freep.com

Detroit News:
www.detroitnews.com

I'm not going through the rest for you. I'm sure you can find more that criticize it in the story.

Point is: Yeah they've been covering it and criticizing it. But good try though.
