Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

"When the political system is widely seen as doing its job, somebody like Trump, who violates its basic norms, is seen as illegitimate. A politician who blatantly lies doesn't stand a chance. But this changes when more and more people come to believe that the system is rigged and that most politicians don't have their best interests in mind. Amid such a "crisis of legitimacy," voters don't particularly care whether a politician plays by the rules of the game. Instead, they long for somebody who bluntly states how rotten the system really is. In this kind of context, voters no longer abhor detectable lies, or even racist statements, in quite the same way as you'd expect. On the contrary, they start to see such visible violations of basic norms as proof that their favorite candidate really is different from everybody else."

Here's a good piece on why Trump supporters don't care that he's a blatant, extraordinarily stupid liar. (Disregarding those who don't think he is, which is probably a not inconsiderable number if the Retort can be taken as representative of the population as a whole). The long and short of it is that they're willing to concede that he lies, but they define authenticity in opposition to extant political norms. If he says something demonstrably false that accords with their beliefs, he's just speaking his mind, unlike every other spineless politician, and that they value more than honesty or integrity. Or intelligence. Or a healthy diet. Or the wisdom to hire a good hairstylist.

They've accepted that perception is more important than facts.... and much easier to change.

Sounds like that parallels religion in general.

excellent insight on how some of the majority of voters, rightly disgusted with DC, interpret the dotard

Shania Twain gets it.

Too bad 2016's DNC didn't.

And 2018 DNC still doesn't really get it.

All they know is Trump is bringing in democratic voters. So. Run with it.

You loser libs need to stop projecting and come embrace reality. There is no such thing as an honest politician - they ALL LIE. Yes, this includes the half-black messiah you all still worship. It includes Hillary and it includes Trump. What matter is what is being lied about, how big of a deal is that issue, and does the person get the things you care about done. Let's look at some recent history:

Pretty much every GOP congress critter ran on 2 main issues: getting rid of Obamacare and cutting the size of government. I really don't know any of my fellow Trump supporters that put tax reform (at least non-corporate and repatriation of cash) in their top 5 things they wanted accomplished. We wanted an end to wars, fair trade deals, cut spending, and build the wall (ie control immigration). So, now that they failed to deliver on what is important, they are getting hammer in polls on an individual basis while Trump is still riding high because they lied to their supporters about things that matter to them.

If Trump says he has a 14" dong or that he will lock up Hillary, it really does not matter because neither of these things actually effect my life. So, that lie or crowd size, etc does not matter.

So, to throw this back at the Libbies - do you believe the Dems don't lie blatantly to you? The got caught red-handed rigging the primary, lied to you for years about their stance on immigration and global trade, lied to you repeatedly about being anti-war, lied to you repeatedly about regulating Wall Street (still zero prosecutions during Obama's time and too big to fail was not addressed), etc. Do these things bother you? I ask as these are things that are important to me and I would stop supporting the party that lies about these issues.

You can't fight fantasy.

Trump ran on closing the borders and building a wall, ending offshoring and bringing back good jobs, stopping stupid wars, cancelling stupid trade agreements, rewriting Obamacare and tax reform.

There certainly was a tax cut which violates conservative talking points.

While many think we are in an economic recovery its really just another stock market bubble, in which low interest rates available only to the largest capitalists, driven by stock buybacks. The buybacks drive up stock prices and Executive bonuses. Our 70,000 lost factories will never return. All we can do is invent new ones. The poor quality jobs being created are averaged into Executive bonuses.

Whether the dotard can or will succeed with other promises is certain only for those living in fantasyland.

He is? He didn't even bring in a majority of voters overall or even the most voters for that matter. So does that mean Hillary brought in Republican voters? Yes because I know a couple that I think of as smart that did vote for her.

That said I do know Bernie primary voters who did vote for him. I agree with the basic insights of the article - to an extent. People have been fed up with Politicians as along as I can remember. Since the election of Obama things seem to have become worse though. He was a VERY divisive President and I am sorry but the reason I see for this is race. He wanted to change things in a good way for average people (i.e. the middle class) but that didn't fly with too many and created an extraordinarily bad political climate.

And here is a prime example ---- imbicilious - note the instant move toward insults and name calling that's a telltale sign.

"There is no such thing as an honest politician - they ALL LIE."

And here, in a nutshell, is our problem.

If HRC were lying, the lying would be unforgivable. Meanwhile, the same lies, just with an R after their name, get a pass.

No politician ever lied 6 times a day to the press.... including such obvious lies as attendance at his coronation.

"Conversely is true for a Hillary supporter."

Horse manure. If President HRC told 1/10th the lies DJT tells, she'd be long impeached by now.

My point was, 18 months ago, a Presidential lie would've been highlighted and scandalized by that poster.

Today, a Presidential lie occurs every day ending in "Y", and that poster's reaction is all politicians lie. That makes him part of the problem.

Rules are great when they are skewed in your favor. Enter new players that win by playing by those rules and those whiny little ------- that were previously favored want to change the rules.

#17 And is exactly why the RNC is working so hard to eliminate early voting, moving and closing voting places, putting flyers on cars in poor neighborhoods that voting was moved to Wednesday, kicking people off of voter rolls and gerrymandering vulnerable districts 24/7.

"Rules are great when they are skewed in your favor."

That is why Humpy and the Gang who can't shoot straight want to change all the rules to the benefit of Trumpy and the GOP.

Fortunately, because Humpy has no idea how Government works they end up shooting themselves in the foot most of the time.
