Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, April 16, 2018

An unnamed client of Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's longtime personal attorney, is Fox News host Sean Hannity. The revelation came after U.S. District Court judge Kimba Wood ordered Cohen to disclose the name in a court hearing on Monday. In an earlier court filing Monday morning, lawyers for Cohen refused to identify the recent client -- one of three people Cohen represented between 2017 and 2018. The lawyers also refused to identify the names of other past clients.

Shortly after 3 p.m., Fox News Shepard Smith did brief reporting on the revelation: "Well, ahhh, cleaning up a little bit of house work here. You may of heard just a little while ago from court proceedings that there were three people who Micheal Cohen had done legal work for, the president of the United States, one other and a third. And that third has now been said to be Sean Hannity. I just .. Sean Hannity is on the radio on the air right now. We just spoke with his publicist here at Fox News who said that he says that they had been friends for a long time, he never denied that he was his lawyer, he did some legal work for him along the way and that's the extent of that. We'll have more as we get it here on Fox News."

Then Smith went straight into a Hack Attacks segment on Russia hacking computers around the world.

Mr Hannity's explanation:

Trump attorney Michael Cohen's mystery legal client: Fox News commentator Sean Hannity
www.washingtonpost.com

..."Michael Cohen has never represented me in any matter," the conservative commentator wrote on Twitter. "I never retained him, received an invoice, or paid legal fees I have occasionally had brief discussions with him about legal questions about which I wanted his input and perspective."

"I assumed those conversations were confidential, but to be absolutely clear they never involved any matter between me and a third-party," Hannity added....

This isn't about Cohen being a fixer for Hannity. This is a desperate attempt by Hannity to help save Trump. As far as we know the warrant identified two of Cohen's clients as being involved in criminal acts with Cohen. Cohen claimed there was another innocent client, in order to try to justify the lame hail mary defense that Cohen's other clients deserve to have their communications protected by AC privilege. Hannity volunteered to be that client, but by his own admission Cohen had not represented him, and in fact Hannity is a sham client to support the weak attempt at arguing for AC, when non exists because Cohen and his clients were colluding on criminal acts.

They should all get agents and try to support their families off the movie rights to this epic bonfire of vanities.

They aren't going after him for his affair with the porn star. They are going after paying hush money right before the election.

"Because of the timing, both hush-money payments amount to unreported, in-kind contributions to the Trump campaign.Cohen's payment constituted an illegally large in-kind contribution to the Trump campaign. Moreover, Cohen made the payment in coordination with Trump, states the complaint, so the campaign should have reported it as both an in-kind contribution, and as an expenditure."

"A Clifford lawsuit seeking release from her nondisclosure agreement states point blank that the purpose of her $130,000 payment was "to avoid her telling the truth, thus helping to ensure that he [Trump] won the Presidential Election."

Judge Rejects Trump's Request to Review Seized Cohen Materials
www.nytimes.com

...A federal judge on Monday rejected an attempt by President Trump and his longtime personal lawyer, Michael D. Cohen, to block prosecutors in Manhattan from immediately reviewing a trove of materials seized in F.B.I. raids last week on Mr. Cohen's office, home, hotel room and safe deposit box.

But feeling her way toward a resolution of the clash involving Mr. Trump and prosecutors investigating Mr. Cohen, the judge, Kimba M. Wood, signaled that she was considering appointing a special master to assist prosecutors if and when they cull through documents seized in the raids....

Judge Slows U.S. Review of Trump Lawyer's Records: Cohen Update
www.bloomberg.com

...U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood said that federal authorities who seized documents from the lawyer, Michael Cohen, would provide copies to Cohen's team. A lawyer for Cohen said they could provide a list of proposed special masters by Tuesday. The government will also provide names.

The judge voiced confidence in federal prosecutors and stressed that she didn't want to slow down the matter. "I have faith in the Southern District U.S. attorney's office that their integrity is unimpeachable," Wood said. She said her interest is in "getting this moving"speedily and efficiently....

Cohen has taped conversations and/or records that will embarrass or perhaps criminally implicate Hannity which his legal team knows the FBI already has. The only plausible reason to name Hannity is to try and build privilege around specific confiscated materials involving him and Michael Cohen that are currently in possession of the Feds.

#76 | Posted by morris at 2018-04-16 10:41 PM | Reply

The experience I have had with attorneys is that there have been 2 AC relationships for lack of a better term. One is a formal relationship established upon signing contracts, the other is upon discussions with the attorney (an initial assessment/interview/advising scenario). Not to say my experience is all inclusive. Hannity seems to have blurred the lines. I suspect he quickly realized that his initial denial that he paid Cohen any money was false leading him to a "small payment" when he realized that there is probably a paper trail of payment. He sounds like he is desperate and making stupid mistakes. He could have gone with the initial interview discussions and been done with it. Him changing his story around smells of obfuscation. And of course dealing with an obvious crook like Cohen isn't good to start off with.

And this is just a thought: Could some of it include communications between Hannity and Cohen regarding Trump's wishes (or orders) about the "messaging" Hannity should deliver in his role as media commentator off of his various platforms? Could this communication evidence intentional manipulation of major right wing media from the White House while at the same time they publicly demonize non-sympathetic outlets for being "fake"?

He's only claiming 3, and we know the second was a one-off. Why would Hannity be the third? Why would he have legal status when all the others entering Cohen's orbit don't? One possible reason is that Hannity has been committing obstruction of justice if he's been communicating the White House's anti-FBI defense that he coordinates through Trump and Cohen, with Cohen having conversations confirming such an arrangement.

We'll find out soon enough. Today's attorneys bumbled through a public disclosure that might not have happened should they have given the judge a note with Hannity's name written on it, as was one of their options. They also stated that they would immediately appeal an adverse decision, but they did neither. Judge Wood may had decided NOT to divulge his name today without taking further time in consideration, but they didn't even give her the chance by verbalizing his name themselves.

Misogyny? No. Russia? Definitely. Fox news and Hannity? Absolutely.

The longer you say russia is not a big deal the dumber you look. So far you're competing with hannity for that title.

It's a good thing Fox News dropped the "Fair and Balanced" canard. Even their viewers don't buy into that nonsense.

He sold himself as the better alternative to Clinton...the funniest thing about all this is its the crap he slung at Clinton is boomeranging back to him.... Ya know... I wonder if there is the possibility that ... if he didn't continue running against Clinton and making his term in office a continuation of running against her... make that... running same smarmy way he ran his campaign against her (and still lost the popular vote).... these things would be a bunch of non sequiturs rather than a measurement of how effective he is..

Baloney, he had nothing new to throw at Hillary Clinton. Everything he threw was out there for years, investigation after investigation, it was a nonsense. What he did was he said he would enact tariffs, bring back manufacturing. The folks in the rust belt ate it up, loved it. Now, he seems to be backing away from it, meeting with Japanese Prime Minister this weekend, even talked about joining TPP. But he got those votes he needed in the rust belt that won him the election.
