Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Saturday, April 14, 2018

Imagine sitting down in a cafe with a mate, and not ordering anything because you were waiting for another friend, only to have police storm the place and arrest you. Sounds ridiculous, right? For two men sitting in a Philadelphia Starbucks this situation unfortunately became their reality. Footage filmed by a witness in the shop shows how the shocking incident played out. They were waiting for a friend to show up, who did as they were taken out in handcuffs for doing nothing.

This is the America that Conservatives built.
Where armed Government agents can just haul away anyone they want, whenever they want. And the populace is afraid to object less they be shot in cold blood.
I'm sure Trump thinks those cops treated those "thugs" too nicely.

Its not a clear cut case, but I think "loitering with intent to conspire", or, "Mopery with intent to gawk, while black" will be the charge.

In the 80's I worked for a very large computer manufacturer in one of their large sales branches. There was a relatively small number of blacks (probably not more than 5%) and the saying among us was "be careful, if they see three or more of us talking to each other they'll think its some kind of conspiracy". It is the racist culture (not saying the individuals are/were racist themselves) that causes people (even black people) to be suspicious of blacks. It is cultural conditioning. It won't change until the culture changes. Maybe in another 2-3 generations (if we last that long). In the meantime, there needs to be accountability with real consequences for agents of government who act on those racist stereotypes.

It won't change until black people stop the self-hate and respect who they are (I am looking at you-know-who).

Until you don't respect yourself, how do you expect someone else to do it for you?

From the cited article...

..."White people's incredulity at the reality of racism that POC [people of colour] face on a daily basis underscores just how pernicious racism is," wrote one Twitter user.

"I'm white and it bothers me that other white people are blindly giving the cops the benefit of the doubt and not to the very calm guys minding their own business in a public place (who happen to be black)," another said. "Their blatant racism towards those men is disgusting."...

"The employees told officers the two men wanted to use the restroom but were told the facilities are only for paying customers. The Starbucks employees then asked the men to leave, but they refused, Ross says.

Officers responded and asked the men three times to "politely to leave the location because they were being asked to leave by employees because they were trespassing." When the men again refused to leave, they were arrested "without incident," Ross says.

The men were taken to a police station and released when it became clear Starbucks didn't want to press charges."

Starbucks called the police and advised them that the two were refusing to leave. When the police arrived they were apparently asked 3 more times to leave and refused. Starbucks wanted them arrested, was there probable cause to make an arrest, sure looks like it. By the way did you notice who decided not to press charges? That's how the criminal justice system works.

Further, it would have taken a Starbucks employee or customer to consider the individuals as loitering, hence the police would not have been the ones to identify them as such. This, again, begs the question: "What was it about them that made anyone in the establishment believe they were loitering?"

A simple argument against this current example of implicit bias would be evidence of 7 police escorting 2 white males out of a Starbucks because they were there for a 'considerable' amount of time without purchasing anything.

Guess. It just seems so orderly and unnecessary. If I wanted to profile them I might mention that first guys pants have something dusted on just the front of his upper legs which cleanly taper down to exposed clean socks and shoes. Similarly the fellow in the back does have bright white shoes. The police seemed to know these two. I dunno, we'll obviously see if there really wasn't any reason for their bizarre arrest.

Are you asserting that because these two are really dark black, wearing dark colors, cornrows and no cash for coffee there might be something evil afoot? I dunno, maybe they are members of Black Panther and these cops are going to treat them to coffee elsewhere. Not everything is political, but it's good to analyze - I'm not hoping I'm wrong or right either way. I just don't know anything about the interaction other than the video, body language, and customer interaction louder than the arrests going on. I'm white, I don't know much about getting arrested in a coffee shop. ;]

Imo, some things deserve a little ceremony. The water freshly purified, espresso beans kept frozen. It makes a difference, perhaps in taste, but definitely in enjoyment. No sugar, just cream please.

I used to spend $27/lb for good Ethiopian beans. Excellence is obvious. However, for baking I find Folgers crystals aroma is the best. Drinking it as coffee reminds me of visiting family who don't drink coffee. A little bittersweet.

Frozen beans makes the brew much smoother, but this is really just part of appreciation for the coffee at it's best. I don't brew a pot at a time, just an extra-large cup.

One of the bet cups of espresso I've ever had was at a ME restaurant - early day, served sliced cucumbers, tomatoes and hummus. So perfect together. I might normally eat something sweet, maybe pastry-like with my brew instead of a plate of veggies.

I see that many more stories are developing over this arrest - Starbucks officially apologized, how interesting.

Interview with the person who posted the video:

www.phillymag.com

FTA:

When did you first notice the two men who wound up being arrested at the Starbucks?

I was just sitting there working on my laptop, and I guess I first noticed them when the two first cops -- the bike cops -- walked in. The girl behind the counter had called 911, apparently, and the cops came and said the guys were "trespassing." They said we were waiting for somebody, and then the white guy in the video -- that's their family friend they were waiting for -- he shows up. The guys wanted to know what they did. And then more cops and more cops and more cops show up.

And then how did it escalate from there?

A bunch of people in the store were standing up and talking to the girl behind the counter and the cops, asking why this was happening. And then they freaking put them in handcuffs and perp-walked them out the freaking store. These guys never raised their voices. They never did anything remotely aggressive.

You would have heard or seen it.

I was sitting close to where they were. Very close. They were not doing anything. They weren't.

What's been the reaction to the video that you shared?

I can't even get over it. It's got 4.15 million views, 101,000 retweets. It's freaking insane. Honestly, I didn't think this would get picked up.

Why not?

People ignore this kind of stuff. They don't believe that it happens. People are saying that there must be more to this story. There is not. This would never happen to someone who looks like me. People don't believe black people when they say this stuff happens. It does. They want to know the extenuating circumstances. There are none.

Well, Starbucks appears to recognize that this was wrong:

Starbucks ceo: Reprehensible outcome in Philadelphia incident

Dear Starbucks Partners and Customers:

By now, you may be aware of a disheartening situation in one of our Philadelphia-area stores this past Thursday, that led to a reprehensible outcome.

I'm writing this evening to convey three things:

First, to once again express our deepest apologies to the two men who were arrested with a goal of doing whatever we can to make things right. Second, to let you know of our plans to investigate the pertinent facts and make any necessary changes to our practices that would help prevent such an occurrence from ever happening again. And third, to reassure you that Starbucks stands firmly against discrimination or racial profiling.

...The video shot by customers is very hard to watch and the actions in it are not representative of our Starbucks Mission and Values. Creating an environment that is both safe and welcoming for everyone is paramount for every store. Regretfully, our practices and training led to a bad outcome -- the basis for the call to the Philadelphia police department was wrong. Our store manager never intended for these men to be arrested and this should never have escalated as it did.

We also will further train our partners to better know when police assistance is warranted. news.starbucks.com

The rational is being used that the gentlemen didnt buy anything and went to the bathroom. Now there are many stores here in NC that say if you dont buy something, you cant use the restroom. So now I guess we are saying people can come inside of a business, sit down, take up a paying customer's seat and not buy anything? If they were just "waiting" for someone, couldnt they have just waited outside or on a park bench or something?

And BTW, the business needs to have it posted that you cannot sit down or use the bathroom unless you buy something. IF not, this is their fault.

As I stated earlier, I use Starbucks in Philly, and often this very store, all the time as my go-to bathroom when I'm downtown. I am always provided with the bathroom code no questions asked.
Also, I trained to work at Starbucks, also at this very store, but never did due to an injury I know that they have a very welcoming policy towards the folks that congregate there. They want people to come and hang out all day.
This was racial bias cut and dry.

"LOL'ing at people who are just finding out that liberals who use or work at StarBucks are racist."
^
Boaz says Starbucks is racist.

"So now I guess we are saying people can come inside of a business, sit down, take up a paying customer's seat and not buy anything?"

Boaz says Starbucks is racist.
You're all over the map on this one.
But I guess that's what it takes for you to carry out your dual mission of of blaming blacks and liberals, and exonerating cops and businesses.

And, since it isn't being reported, citing reports won't work.

When I say "not being reported", I mean talked about by you useless liberals here.

Did another liberal post another viewpoint? Of course not. It hampers your "racist first" meme.

Have you never seen the movie trope where a person is waiting in a restaurant for hours for a date that stood them up?

Yea, Usually they have a cup of coffee or empty plates where they ate something and didnt waste the business's time....

Nope.

No one said "Those ******* deserved it!!!" before you did.

I'm as surprised as you are.

"Look on the bright side. At least Boaz and JeffJ didn't stop by to say this is 100% non-racist, the cops would have been justified to use lethal force if they were scared, and it's black culture needs to change.

I Beletlejuice'd Boaz, now where's JeffJ?

I never said they deserved it.

If Star Bucks didnt have a sign saying, No bathroom unless you purchase, this is all on Star Bucks and their racist employee.

So, anonymous posts on an internet board equate to having been "reported" in your mind?

Back to your post that "alot" isn't being reported. What isn't being reported? Make an itemized list and support your assertion.

Starbucks owns this one, the police simply did what they are paid to do

#34 | POSTED BY KAIKANE

Yup... It's just too bad that the police don't do what they are paid to do when people of color put their hands up and yell, "Don't shoot!" Or carry cell phones, or supposedly sell single cigarettes, or just running away in fear or for just being black.

Okay, that's better, but I don't see how any of it is on Starbucks. Sounds like it's all on the racist employee. Was Starbucks supposed to have a training module "You can't kick people out just for being black and not ordering?" Because you just argued it was okay to kick them out for not ordering.

This has been an interesting journey though what passes for "logical thought" in your mind. Thanks for sharing.

"I thought we were paying them to protect and serve."

To protect and serve Starbucks, and their racist employee.
That's the connection Boaz can never make.

The cops were "just doing their jobs."
Yeah, a job that they got dispatched to because a racist phoned it in.

If the video would have lasted ten seconds longer you would have heard the barista yell "Jamal! Grande grape drink!"

See what you did there? Put black in the first part, then actually quoting what I did say, which had nothing to do with race. The more stupid and ignorant liberal poster would only see black and assume I said it. Which I didnt. Doing your best to throw racism in what I said, even though racism isnt there.

What racists you liberals are. Even putting the racist tag on people who arent racists. It's you racist liberals pushing the racial climate in this country.

Your "connect the dots" allergy is flaring up again.

I don't know what the problem is Boaz. You voted for the guy who thinks cops ought to get a little rougher with trespassers like these two.

Connect the dots.

@ Boazo thanks for proving my point in the post above your last one.

How do you know when an alt-right troglodyte is lying???

"See what you did there? Put black in the first part, then actually quoting what I did say, which had nothing to do with race."

At various times you have argued:

They didn't get kicked out of Starbucks for being black.

The barista was racist, in which case they did get kicked out for being black.

Starbucks didn't have a sign saying "bathrooms are for customers only," so Starbucks is racist.

Equivocating about racism is a piñata, and you are going Rodney King on its ass.

What Boazo seems to miss is that Whites are not kicked out regardless of whether they order. I know people who go there just to hang out and use the internet.

When I would travel, before I got a smartphone, Starbucks, Duncan Donuts, and McDonald's were the places I always knew I could go to use the internet and know that no one would bother me about buying something.

"More libruls pushing the racist climate"

If liberals hadn't started advocating for integration and equal rights conservatives wouldn't have to go to such extremes to get their point across. We don't understand our place in the hierarchy and we get these highfalutin ideas about how our country should work. Conservatives have to behave this way; we really don't give them any other choice.

The video = white privilege.

If the white people arguing with the cops had been black they would have been arrested.

If the cops shot them invertebratej and Boaz would be here saying the cop was right to murder them.

Invertebratej would go a step further and call it "terrible but justified."
