Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, April 11, 2018

A system of Atlantic Ocean currents that regulates global weather is at its feeblest in 1,600 years, weakened partly by climate change, said researchers Wednesday, warning of trouble ahead. Two studies in the journal Nature concluded the system, dubbed the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), is in decline -- validating a long-held scientific suspicion. The weakening, agreed the teams, was the result of melting sea ice, glaciers, and ice-shelves gushing freshwater -- less dense than salty ocean water -- into the North Atlantic. "This freshwater caused the AMOC to weaken because it prevented the waters getting dense enough to sink," David Thornalley of the University College London, who co-authored one of the studies, told AFP. The AMOC is often likened to a conveyer belt redistributing warmth through the ocean, so regulating weather over land as well.

Trump said Climate Change is a myth.
And if it isn't, it's not man's fault.
And if it is, not like we can do anything about it.
And if we could, it's not worth the cost.
And if it was, well...Trump said Climate Change is a myth.

Science is just a liberal conspiracy designed to remove arbitration from analysis and improve decision making.

True, but irrelevant to the simple fact that I would like to know what Indy thinks that means (other than it sounded important when someone else said it).

You can give it a shot, if you are so inclined.

You want me to attempt to explain the machinations of Indy's mind? I'm going to need a 40 of OE and a bag of glue to huff first.

IMHO, he is clearly saying that empirical evidence allows us to make informed decisions instead of relying on uninformed opinions.

But let the man speak for himself.

"That is a generous interpretation of "removing arbitration from analysis"

Why?
arbitration
the use of an arbitrator to settle a dispute.

He's saying scientific understanding settles the dispute, not some arbitrary human who could base their judgment in anything. I think.

This is the entire premise behind The Day After Tomorrow.

They absolutely butcher everything else consequence wise but it's intereting to me that we're "discussing" the real life happening of an almost apocalyptic plot point of a movie (one backed by science even if the movie was horrible) and we've gotten as far as critiquing a poster's English.

Awesome.

Generally they don't rise this fast... Not even close to this fast...

And literally no one has an answer as to why its happening EXCEPT green house gases trapping more heat in the atmosphere. Just like Venus.

So did the Green House gases get their magically? Maybe Aliens are pumping them into the atmosphere?

Tell us, MSGT, what's the cause? Why are they rising so quickly compared to the last several billion years of changes on Earth?

If you can't provide a reasonable explanation, maybe its time to ban you from the site.

This is called a hypnosis. Otherwise know as a scientific wild ass guess. We barely know what the weather was 1600 years ago. We can only guess what the currents were doing that long ago. Someone will get a grant to live on for a while from alarmist and sensational press releases. The problem is the people who sign the checks are not scientist.

So now I just look for the funny. Show me something tangible and peer reviewed and maybe... just maybe, I will actually engage in a debate.

Not a single thing you said is accurate. Congrats. THAT takes effort.

1. The term is Hypothesis.
2. It's a Hypothesis. It's data. Learn your scientific terminology.
3. We have very strong data about the client back then from a large number of factors and evidence we study.
4. We have a very strong idea of what the currents were doing back then.
5. Lots of people will get grants to study it, but hardly anything will be a sensational. It likely may be alarming though.
6. The problem is people who sign checks and post on here, like you, don't know anything about science and don't want to.

You can call it that if you want. It's kind of an outdated term because people like you are too dense to understand what it means. The world as a whole is getting warmer. But due to climate variances, some small parts will get colder. This has to do mainly with ocean currents and the jet stream.

Actually this is an easy one.

It's actually fairly easy to understand the ocean currents from 1,600 years ago because we understand what drives the currents and can trace the effects of the currents. They can actually study sediment and the decayed remains of small animals, usually ones with shells, from the sea floor and determine how strong the current was in a given time period. It becomes fairly easy to compare the current today to the current back then. It gets a bit harder the further back you go which is why they draw the line at 1,600 years for the data because they want to be sure based on the evidence.
