Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, February 28, 2018

Less than half an hour into his meeting with lawmakers on Wednesday, President Trump urged the illegal confiscation of guns, told a Republican (to his face) that he was scared of the NRA and threw a series of wrenches into Congress's legislative strategy on guns. In other words, another meeting with Trump. One of the strangest moments came when he argued that the alleged shooter in the tragedy in Parkland, Fla. -- about whom there were numerous red flags -- should have had his guns taken away regardless of what the law allowed. "I think they should have taken them away, whether they had the right or not," Trump said. He added later, in case there was any doubt: "Take the guns first, go through due process second."

In an exchange with Sen. Patrick J. Toomey (R-Pa.), Trump seemed to not know what was contained in the bill Toomey proposed with Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) after the 2012 tragedy at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. Trump asked whether the bill, which was focused on background checks, would have raised the age limit for buying assault weapons.

When Toomey said it did not, Trump shot back: "You know why? Because you're afraid of the NRA." ...

In an exchange with Pence, Trump said, "I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man's case that just took place in Florida. He had a lot of firearms. They saw everything. To go to court would have taken a long time. So you could do exactly what you're saying but take the guns first, go through due process second."

My suspicion, right wing outlets such as Fox News won't even report that Trump said these things. A total whitewash. Instead they will feature more stories about why the teenage survivors of last week's shooting in Florida are really just bullies who should be disregarded.

To date, right wing outlets still have not figured out how to honestly present the various stupid things Trump says which run counter to right wing orthodoxy. So they pretend it didn't happen or he never said what everyone else reports he said.

"Some of you people are petrified of the NRA. You can't be petrified. You can't be petrified," Trump said."

There IS a rational explanation for this; the TV remote got stuck on MSN instead of Fox Family Values, and Trump was just repeating something he heard on TV, as per usual.

@#5 ... "I think they should have taken them away, whether they had the right or not," Trump said. He added later, in case there was any doubt: "Take the guns first, go through due process second." ...

At tomorrow's press meeting, Ms Sanders is going to paraphrase the statement in a manner that totally changes its meaning and then assert that the paraphrase is what Pres Trump has been saying all along.

For reference, look at what happened after the televised immigration meeting.

Here's how Fox restated Trump's words.
"In addition, the president is also expected to encourage states to create laws for extreme-risk protective orders, which would allow parents and law enforcement to petition courts to take weapons away from anyone threatening to harm themselves or others."
www.foxnews.com

Does anyone think Fox would have treated these statements "I like taking the guns early" and "Take the guns first, go through due process second" the same if Obama/Clinton or any other Dem had said them?

It would, of course, be hilarious if after years of broad brushing Dems it was a GOP Pres who went radically anti-gun.

That's also about the only thing that would really rile up his base against him.

I try not to listen to any actual trump statements and just worry about policies, but I listened to this meeting because I feel the gravity of the issue as a parent with a child approaching school age. The most shocking moment for me was when he said to Feinstein at the end of the meeting that the AR15s were being bought and sold on the black market, so a ban wouldn't do any good. Feinstein has to explain that these weapons are being purchased by mass shooters legally. His staggering ignorance even of an issue he seems as engaged as he can really be is discouraging.

I hate that he is still pushing this arming teachers idea. About an hour before this meeting a teacher in Georgia opened fire in a classroom.
www.foxnews.com

If we aren't going to get the assault weapons out of the general population, than my suggestion for protecting schools is you call up the national guard and deploy guardsmen and women as the armed deterrent on our public school campuses. You aren't going to win a combat engagement with an AR15 with a semi auto pistol in the hands of at best a recreational shooter teacher. If we need combat security at our schools then we need to rotate national guard troops with combat equipment and training to do this job. Quick f@#%#@ing around with the dirty harry fantasies.

I would be much more comfortable with my child getting used the sight of a couple of guardsman patrolling the school perimeter (keep them outside of the school unless there is an incident) than dealing with local PD or sheriffs. The Guardsman will have only one job, walk a perimeter, and in the event of a shooter, enter and engage. Otherwise they can be invisible from within the campus environment.

Israel dismisses NRA's claims about guns laws
School shootings were never common here, and Israel should not be invoked as ostensible proof of need for more weapons, experts say

Far from the image of a heavily armed population where ordinary people have their own arsenals to repel attackers, Israel allows its people to acquire firearms only if they can prove their professions or places of residence put them in danger. The country relies on its security services, not armed citizens, to prevent terror attacks.

Israel. Gun laws in Israel are comprehensive despite soldiers being allowed to carry their service weapons on or off duty. Civilians must obtain a firearms licence to lawfully acquire, possess, sell or transfer firearms and ammunition. ... Around 40% of applications for firearms permits are rejected.

We spend millions to detect and predict tornadoes.

We spend $0.00 to detect and predict school shootings.

Again a very different threat, and a vastly inadequate response to the threat where responding to it with all the tools in the shed is seen as a material threat to the Second Amendment itself by the gun lover lobby.

This "story" had to do with something Trump said. Why even read it? It is a complete and total waste of time to report on, or pay any attention to, anything Trump says. He says one thing on Saturday, the contrary on Monday, and on Tuesday he's agreeing with what he said on Saturday again. Then on Thursday he'll deny he said anything contradictory at all. It matters not one whit what Trump says. Ignore that entirely. It matters only what he does.

Well, he just displayed the fact that he has no idea what Congress has been trying to do about gun control up to this point and also displayed his complete ignorance of the entire civics process. That's him doing a lot all by saying very little. It was a comedy show today. I feel lucky I got to witness the whole thing. Tru.p is completely, yet unintentionally, up ending government as we know it. If this unified bill passes as hr desrcibed it today, it would be entirely unprecedented.

Luckily, as you poignantly pointed out, Republicans will not strip 18-20 year olds of their 2nd Amendment rights. Silly to believe they would do anything close so kind of embarrassing for Trump that he would hammer that point as much as he did today.

According to criminologists that study mass shootings, there is no impact. Attackers simply carry multiple weapons, multiple magazines, reload when convenient, and the firing rate is actually quite low. The NIJ studied this and the effects of the AWB 5 years ago. The end result was the AWB had an impact too small to calculate.

Uh, no. He signed a bill that rolled back a rule that affected a subset of SSDI recipients. Those that are incapable of managing their financial affairs such that their benefits are handled by a representative payee. I saw an NBC report that said the rule would have added about 75k to NICS.

I've experience with VA disability recipients under a very similar rule. At one end of the spectrum, some of those recipients were bats**t nuckin' futs and I wouldn't want them near a gun. At the other end, were some that if you met them on the street they would appear as normal as anyone else but for whatever reason(s) the VA didn't want them managing their money.

That said, I have no pretense that the Buffoon has a clue.
