Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Dick's Sporting Goods, the biggest sporting-goods retailer in the U.S., is immediately ending sales of assault-style rifles following the mass shooting at a Florida high school earlier this month that killed 17 people. Dick's is expanding its assault-rifle ban to its 35 Field & Stream stores, after removing the weapons from its flagship stores following the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting. The company is also ending sales of firearms to anyone under the age of 21 and will no longer sell high-capacity magazines.

Walmart, the world's largest retailer, decided to stop selling military-style weapons such as the AR-15 in 2015. The company said at the time that it was a business decision, since sales have declined, and wasn't politically motivated. Still, the decision by large chains to abandon assault-style rifles has increasingly turned them into the domain of mom-and-pop sellers and gun shows.

Unrelated story: I used to work Rawlings (the baseball company) and my first day there I hear someone on the other side of my cube say "I don't see it. I just see a bunch of Dick's."

I sneakily walk around to see what they are talking about and realize they have a spreadsheet open with a bunch of entries for orders from Dick's Sporting Goods.

"We actually sold the shooter a shotgun in November of last year," Stack told CNN's New Day on Wednesday. "We looked at that and found out we did this, we had a pit in our stomach. ... We did everything by the book that we were supposed to do from a legal standpoint. We followed everything we were supposed to do, and somehow, this kid was still able to buy a gun from us. We said we don't want to be a part of this story any longer."

Until recently the foorball stadium in Denver was named "Sports Authority Field at Mile High". When Sports Authority went bankrupt, many Broncos fans were actively hoping and lobbying for Dick's the but out Sports Authority. Denver fans were seriously ready to embrace the name "Dick's at Mile High".

This is what gun control should be. Leave it out of the government's hands. Private businesses can control guns much better than the government. Of course, they won't really do what's necessary and come together to create their own set of rules to follow to help the problem.

Gun control needs to be a lot of things, but this is a good start. Unfortunately, there are a lot of gun shops that see this as helpful for their business and will try to capitalize, which is still why the Government, either State or Federal, needs to step in.

You gotta be kidding me. Private businesses are not controlling jack ----. They are happily selling as many guns as they can in ever more lethal varieties.

Just because one corporation is getting out doesn't mean enough will follow to make a difference. If enough quit other companies will step in.

DALTON, GA. – An armed teacher has been arrested after shots were fired at a high school in a small town in northern Georgia.

The Dalton Police Department reported that "shot or shots" had been fired at Dalton High School just after 11:15 a.m. on the department's official Twitter account.

Minutes later, DPD added that the armed suspect was barricaded inside a classroom at the school and urged parents not to come to the school.

Students were transported to the Northeast Georgia Trade Center for pickup, according to the DPD.

At 11:23 a.m., the department tweeted an update that read "The teacher is in custody."

I think Dick's should have the right to do this, but wouldnt this fall into the discrimination relm, just like a baker refusing to offer something to gay people that they offer to all other customers. If the law says 18 and you sell these items (but only to those over 21)it would seem this is age based discrimination.

Putting an age limit of 21 means USA won't have an Olympic Shooting Team as many start their training at the age of 14-16 to make the team

Handguns are already regulated by age. 21 and over.

Here are the rules for shooting equipment used in the Olympics:

What's being contemplated, banning semi-automatic weapons from those under 21, wouldn't have any effect on those training for the Olympics.

Apparently some here don't believe that private businesses should be allowed to decide for themselves what merchandise they want to sell and the conditions under which they will sell it. They pretend to be all about "freedom" unless, of course, Dick's freedom doesn't coincide with their idea of what merchandise Dick's wants to sell.

Blacks were disproportionately likely to commit homicide and to be the victims. In 2008 the offending rate for blacks was seven times higher than for whites and the victimization rate was six times higher. 93 per cent of black victims were killed by blacks

So...

Based on your logic... To keep us all safe, Dick's should not sell guns to blacks ...??

America's law enforcement officers have shot and killed upwards of 385 people so far this year, according to a new Washington Post investigation. That's a rate of about 1 every 9 hours, or 2.5 shootings per day. That's a lot compared to other countries -- cops in Germany killed only 8 people in 2013-2014, for instance. British police didn't kill anyone last year.

Perhaps Dick's should not sell guns to the police through their commercial accounts department?

That is, unfortunately, the predictable outcome in inner cities with huge unemployment problems. Drugs aren't just a way to get high, drugs are also a livlihood and one that those involved in the trade are willing to fight for. I don't condone it but this disaster for inner cities did not happen in a vacuum and ways could have been found to alleviate the problem other than just incarceration and saddling felons with criminal records making it difficult or impossible for them to find legitimate work, especially in the inner cities. When I was young if a young man got busted for pot he could ofter choose military service rather than jail. When my son came of age that option no longer existed. Many options no longer existed for millions of young black men, raised in poverty, very poorly educated, angry and desperate for the trappings that the rest of society enjoyed seemingly effortlessly.

#38 | Posted by danni at 2018-03-01 03:23 PM | Reply

And, don't forget, just as the 70's generation of young black men were coming of age the nation started outsourcing the jobs those young men might have gotten as had the white men who had come before them.

Drugs aren't just a way to get high, drugs are also a livlihood and one that those involved in the trade are willing to fight for...

yawn... yadda, yadda, yadda....

Gunrunning is also highly profitable enterprise. Lots of profit in Chinese Norinco AR15's selling for $95 each and a street price of $275.

The assault ban will only increase numbers and supply from illegal sources.

Now the results of the country with the strongest gun control laws on the planet...

China's expanding underground gun trade is the byproduct of the state's struggle with market forces. The state fears an armed populace, but a strict ban on gun ownership has only created a black market where the wealthy and well-connected can still buy guns with ease. With the growth of the Chinese economy, the gun trade will continue to expand in response to rising demand from a population with money to spend and an appreciation for weapons stemming from its culture and history. Currently, the gun ban is unlikely to be lifted, yet it is necessary for the Chinese state to recognize the unintended consequences of the ban, and how it allocates guns disproportionately into the hands of black society syndicates that constitute a threat to the livelihood of law abiding citizens, a phenomenon that will have long-lasting negative consequences for social stability.

No, there is no federal civil rights law that applies, employment yes but not public accommodations.

CORRECT

A business cannot refuse service to anyone that the Civil Rights Act deems a "protected class." This would include discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, creed, national origin or disability but NOT age under the present Equality Act of 2010.

This is why such a law banning firearms to those under 21 would make such a great test case.

If you were around during WW2 President Franklin D. Roosevelt lowered the minimum age for the military draft age to 18, at a time when the minimum voting age (as determined by the individual states) had historically been 21.The debate about lowering voting age from 21 to 18 began during World War II and intensified during the Vietnam War, when most of those subjected to the draft were too young to vote, and the image of young men being forced to risk their lives in the military without the privileges of voting successfully pressured legislators to lower the voting age nationally and in many states.

In 1984, Congress passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act, which required states to raise their ages for purchase and public possession to 21 where it remains today.

BUT buying a beer is not covered by the Constitution or the Bill of Rights...

But voting is - 26th Amendment
and owning a firearm is - 2nd Amendment.

So would passing a law or Presidential Order against a legally aged adult who can legally vote, legally marry, or can be legally drafted be denied their constitutional right to keep and bear Arms?
