Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, February 25, 2018

The boy looks into a microscope and sees his desire take form. The teacher lets her hair down. We see her propped on a table, her pencil skirt showing off her butt, her blouse tied in a knot to display her midriff, like Britney Spears in "Hit Me Baby One More Time." Now she's sweaty and naked. Now she's wearing a little black dress and they're dancing close. She's not passive, not threatened. She loves the attention. She loves the male gaze. This is, then, what the video's going for: Récamier as sex fantasy, as object of desire. But then something weird happens. The perspective shifts all of a sudden, and we see the world through the teacher's eyes. She wants the boy, more than anything, but no, he's not available to her. She looks for him in the hallways, in the classrooms, until she finds him with another girl. He looks at her blankly. She cries milky white tears.

The article concludes: "It doesn't make sense. It's just silliness. Just fun."

I disagree. I think the video was intended to provoke exactly the type of discussions about the points the author brought up. Madame Récamier is an extremely talented musician and astute artist, and she knew exactly what she was doing with this, in my opinion.
