Police in Amarillo shot an innocent man who helped foil a possible church shooting. The shooting happened shortly after 9 a.m. Feb. 14 at the Faith City Mission, a faith-based outreach organization. Police said Joshua Len Jones, 35, of Amarillo, barged into a church building at Faith City Mission, pulled out a gun and was holding about 100 congregants and church staff hostage. In the time between when police were dispatched and when officers arrived, a handful of churchgoers wrestled Jones to the ground. One of the congregants was able to grab Jones' gun.

This story is an example of what has always baffled me about the "good guy with a gun" meme that the NRA always trots out.

The police come upon a scene with gunfire. How do the police know who is the good guy(s) and who is the bad guy(s)? The police have less than seconds to sort it out before they get shot.

Do they shoot no one? Everyone? A random selection?

There is more information than your simple description.

We don't know exactly what was happening at the church.

I admit it's a problem in general, this is where my idea for certification would be helpful. How to diffuse a confusing situation.

Presuming I take your point, then explain to me, please...

And everyone needs to take notice of what the good guy said. He just got the bad part. That's all. There are positives and negatives to everything. He accepts that. Sometimes the wrong people can get the shaft. The true criminals are the people who think every single individual of 7 billion people in the world should never have to be inconvenienced in any way and actually think that is a possibility. It's not. The only way to make that possible is to enslave everyone and force them to live the exact same lives with the exact same rules and repercussions. If that's what you want, then go buy an island and invite all like-minded people there to live so you can all be slaves...but at least no one will get shot.

Certification of what? Did you want the good guy to whip out his firearm safety certification while the cops lit him up?

Are you on crack?

Do you really think the police are going to ask for certificates before they start shooting? Are all certificate holders supposed to wear green vests and bad guys wear red vests?

"this is where my idea for certification would be helpful."

Philandro Castile had your helpful 'certification.'

The cops still shot his black ass dead.

It was church.

Maybe they should have just killed them all just in case and let God sort it out?

If there is a gun on the island eventually someone will get shot.

If there is no gun on the island someone will eventually recreate one.

Well they feared for their lives, of course.

I don't think that anybody could have predicted that Police would shoot a good guy with a gun at a 2nd Amendment & American Freedom event.

"I don't think anybody could have predicted that these people would take a gun a shoot up Columbine, take another one and shot up Newtowm, take another one and shoot up orlando, take another one and shoot up Vegas, take another one and shoot up Parkland; that they would try to use a gun as a weapon of mass murder."

"Of course we knew there would always be mass shootings. But that's an acceptable price to pay for our right to bear arms."

Of course I can!

Captain Kirk didn't even have as nice a communicator device as I have. And Siri is smarter than his ship's computer. Siri is connected to the internet. Did Captain Kirk even have an Internet?
