Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, February 23, 2018

An unknown figure this time last year, having only ever played in low-key games at pubs and his local casino in Hull, [John] Hesp made history in July by entering the game's most prestigious tournament - the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas - finishing fourth out of 7,220 entrants, and winning $2.6 million. ... "It's just something that was on my bucket-list for ages. My aim was to finish in the top 1,000 and have some fun. "I'm not a seasoned player playing four or five times a week - it was once a month at my local casino in Hull on a £10 buy-in. So to progress to £2m and international poker superstardom almost overnight has been a proper fairy tale."

There are no guarantees in Poker, but a winning strategy might be:

If you're dealt your first two cards, and they are the same suit, a pair, one of them is a face or ace, then stay for the flop, else fold. If you stay for the flop, and you're holding three of a kind, a flush, a straight, four of a kind, or a straight flush, then either call or make a bet, or else fold. If you have not folded after the flop, it is safer to check or call after the flop, else you might scare off people who could be making donations to "your" pot. Going all-in might work, but it can be a way to be removed from the game in a hurry. Of course the buy-in for my games is either free against a computer, or else ten dollars, playing for dimes. In the long run, you will probably lose. My way will make your dimes or your chips last a bit longer.
