Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh called for concealed carry in U.S. schools on Sunday in response to the deadly shooting at a Florida high school that killed 17 and injured several others. "The solution is we need concealed carry in these schools," Limbaugh said during an interview on Fox News Sunday. ... Democratic officials and some Republicans responded to the fatal shooting in Parkland, Florida, on Wednesday by calling for tighter regulations on guns. But many Republican leaders have downplayed the need for additional laws, with President Donald Trump and other officials instead emphasizing the need for mental health reform.

The onslaught marked the 30th mass shooting in 2018, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

Measures to expand gun regulations have repeatedly stalled in Congress, facing strong opposition in the GOP-controlled House and Senate.

Maybe the wingdings are right, maybe having armed guards in schools will keep kids safe.

Oh wait, "schools in the Broward district typically have one or two school resource officers, typically Broward County Sheriff deputies who are armed and always on campus."

I guess the wingdings are retarded ----------- that hate children after all.

This is madness. The gun rights crowd treats the Second Amendment like a suicide pact.

Every time there's a mass shooting laws are changed to make it easier to obtain and carry guns and harder to take guns from the mentally ill. When that is our response, is it any surprise the problem keeps getting worse?

#17 | Posted by Sycophant, comparing this country with any other is not reverent. We are not like other countries. More cosmopolitan, more diverse, and guaranteed the right to possess firearms. Here is a little fact to consider. The country with the highest homicide rate in the world is Honduras and surprise! Private ownership of firearms is illegal. The country with the lowest homicide in the world is Switzerland, and surprise! Every home in that country is required to keep an automatic weapon at home. Two countries with the same population, sort of as in this country the highest homicide rate is Detroit, where it is almost impossible to legally have a fire arm or a CCP, and Plano Texas, the most heavily armed city in the United States has the lowest. Russia has very restrictive gun laws, and has four times the homicide rate we do. The ugly truth? Best indicator of a high homicide rate? The population of black people in an area. True every where on the planet.

So... what is it that will be changed?

#26 | Posted by LampLighter at 2018-02-19 02:53 PM | Reply

"Understand this first, there is no such thing as gun control, that which is controlled is the people."

"For his 2016 book "Rampage Nation," Klarevas collected data on every gun massacre -- which he defines as six or more people shot and killed -- for the 50 years before 2016. His aim was to see whether there was any change in the number of gun massacres while the 10-year federal ban on assault weapons was in place.

He calls the results "staggering." Compared with the 10-year period before the ban, the number of gun massacres during the ban period fell by 37 percent, and the number of people dying from gun massacres fell by 43 percent. But after the ban lapsed in 2004, the numbers shot up again -- an astonishing 183 percent increase in massacres and a 239 percent increase in massacre deaths."

You don't want to believe there is such a thing as effective gun control but that doesn't make it a fact.

Danni, try looking up the FBI crime stats that I pointed out earlier in another thread. Violent crime rates in the U.S. have been dropping since about 1991. Redefining the definition of "gun massacres" doesn't begin to change the FACT that the AW ban was a total failure. I also pointed out that it didn't keep "millions of assault weapons" from being sold as you also claimed.

Effective gun control is keeping the crazy folks from getting a legal firearm while not hassling 99.x% of U.S. gun owners who commit no crimes. It's a Constitutional Right, after all.

#29 | Posted by AKat at 2018-02-19 04:38 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 2

#28 DmtDust: "Switzerland, where the ammunition is kept locked up at the Armory. "

That was only after the Swiss law was changed in 2007. And the average was 50 rounds of gov't supplied ammo for the gov't supplied militia weapon. Privately owned ammo can and is kept in the individual's home residence.

#30 | Posted by AKat at 2018-02-19 04:45 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

From the link Danni posted (Washington Post) in #27 above:

"The killers in recent incidents like Las Vegas, Orlando and Sutherland Springs were each able to walk into a gun shop in the days and months before their attacks, and legally purchase their assault weapons and magazines after passing a standard background check. Under an assault weapons ban, that wouldn't be possible."

The big lie is wouldn't be possible. Because the same firearms WERE still being sold during the fake AW ban, except the features that were banned were modified. Don't believe me? Look at the banned Colt AR-15 rifle that was banned from manufacture after 1994, then look at the Colt Match Target Rifle that was legal to sell. Notice any real difference? Functionally they were both the same, capable of firing at the same rate and able to use any and all AR-15 magazines available (5, 10, 20, 30, 40, including drum mags).

The politicians who backed the AW ban sold a bill of goods to the American public and it came back and bit them right on their backsides. It even cost the Dems heavily during an election. And after the sunset, brisk sales of anything-goes AR-15 rifles continued even to this day.

Smoke and mirrors, folks, nothing but smoke and mirrors!

I see some want to ban the AR-15. Has anyone told them that a Glock 19 semi-auto pistol [just one example of many] holds 15 rounds in the mag and fire at the same rate as that AR-15 [i.e., as fast as one can pull the trigger]. If the same man had the Glock and one extra mag [30 rounds total for the mathematically challenged] which can be changed in about 2 sec [I've had myself timed at the range] then he would be able to do the same amount of damage with a bullet that is much greater in diameter than the AR-15 [5.56mm]. Were that true we wouldn't have a very long list of mass murders committed with AR-15 type weapons. The fact is that mass shooters prefer them, why? You answer that one but don't deny facts. My suspicion is that the AR-15, being a military style weapon, reinforces the image that the owner wants to see in himself when, in reality, he does not match that chosen image. So, they buy these guns to feel like men. When it still doesn't make them feel adequate as men they take it to the next step and kill people which they believe, at the time, will fill that need to feel masculine, powerful and decisive.

That may be what Trump wants today, but what makes you think it will be what he wants tomorrow after all the NRA-bought toadies around him whisper in his ear (not to mention Fox News)?

Conservative media is coming out against banning 'bump stocks' used in Las Vegas shooting

Breitbart News has run several articles in the last several days criticizing Republicans for considering legislation to ban the gun modifications.

In a headline on the site on Thursday, Breitbart framed an Associated Press story about GOP leaders considering a bump stock ban as a "widespread cave," while the top story on the site described White House counselor Kellyanne Conway as "weak" for telling CNN that the administration is open to a gun control conversation.

And on Wednesday, the site ran a story titled "Five Key Facts About Bump-Stock Devices." The story pointed out that bump-stocks decrease accuracy and aren't the only devices that modify semi-automatic weapons to increase the rate of fire. Moreover, Breitbart Second Amendment columnist AWR Hawkins wrote that eliminating them would be part of a "typical leftist war on the poor."

"A ban on bump-stock devices takes away the $200 device poorer citizens can buy to at least pretend to be shooting the real machines they will never be able to afford," Hawkins wrote.

The Federalist repeatedly mocked gun control proponents on the left advocating for banning bump stocks, pointing out that individuals could teach themselves to bump-fire without the stocks.

The Daily Caller, the right-leaning digital site founded by Tucker Carlson, hasn't outright endorsed bump stocks, but has taken to trolling gun control proponents and chastising outlets like CNN for their coverage of bump stocks.www.businessinsider.com
